I'll start by saying the material of this hoodie is very different than any other sun hoodie on the market. I'd best describe this as a stretchy thin soft shell jacket. It's not nearly as breathable as their echo hoodies but it's still very comfortable. Another thing that I appreciate is that this hoodie is definitely less dorky than most sun hoodies on the market. The hood itself is also shaped perfect for my noggin, Its very adjustable. With that being said, I'm 5'8 185lbs muscular and a size medium was definitely too small, it's tight around my upper body and when I raise my arms the fabric lifts up to my belly button. I'll be returning it, but I'm not too sure if I'll order a replacement.
One Star Taken, One Given Back
Wouldn't have any outdoor shirt or base layer without a zippered front to dump heat. The Astroman is about the only sun hoody on the market with this feature. For this reason I already have two and this is my third. Not only is this a great standalone sun hoody but makes a decent wind shirt over a light base layer during the shoulder seasons due to the tight weave of the material. This newer "Air" version has no thumb loops like my old versions so I'm taking one star away. I dont use thumb loops all the time, but it is a nice feature to keep the sun off the back of your hands, and I find myself using them more often especially when the sun is blazing down and I'm not actively using my hands. However, I'm adding that star back due to the updated construction and material in the armpits and down the sides which is a mesh like material to provide greater ventilation for those sweaty regions. Great product!
The sun hoodie you've been looking for
Just got back from a brisk late morning walk with the dog and I am so glad that I had this sun hoodie with me. I layered it over a ultra light weight merino wool t-shirt and the combination was outstanding. Temp was around 60*F, full sun, and a light breeze. I never felt too hot and when the breeze picked up I was quickly cooled off. I like the 1/4 zip on this piece as apposed to other sun hoodies that do not have it, as I tend to run hot - it's just nice to have another way to dump heat when needed. The seams are lined around the neck so no chafing. I am 5'11 weigh 195lbs with a sporty build - the XL fits loose and flowing. I prefer it this way as it helps keep air moving moisture away from my skin. You could use this piece as a base layer or a mid/outer layer if you paired it with a light weight shirt under neither or a wind/rain shell over the top. Highly versatile. I plan on pairing this with the OR Shadow Wind Hoodie on my next through hike around the three sisters wilderness. I think if your looking for an ultra light weight wind and sun protection system, this is the way to go. High quality products all around from OR and this one is no different. you wont be disappointed.
