Great kid's pack for hiking

My kids are using these daily for outdoor school. It fits their water bottle, hydration pack, and lunch box (laptop lunches). You can squeeze a lightweight hoodie or small pair of shoes (like moccasins or Tom's) in the outside stretchy pocket. My kids hike barefoot and bring their shoes in case. Overall we are very happy. This is just we were looking for. Sturdy, comfortable, lightweight. They don't bounce around on their backs like the bigger school backpacks. The only con is the hydration pack is a little hard to put into the sleeve. But with a little shaking it slid down into place. They are so excited to have water packs so it's ok. Love these and would definitely buy again. Thinking I should get the women's version for myself.

Fits great!

Our 9yo boy has used this pack on multiple trips, in a variety of environments (Yosemite, the Big 5 NP, Acadia, etc.), in spring, summer and fall weather over the past two years. We hike up to 10 miles/8 hours a day, and the pack fits a 1.5L reservoir, safety items, a rain jacket, hat, and snacks, with a *little* room left for an extra layer. The best part about this bag is how well it fits child -sized shoulders and torsos. Once adjusted, the weight is well distributed and the bag doesn't move around. I feel comfortable with our child scrambling up rocks with his pack on, and this more than makes up for the slightly small capacity. I expect it will work well for another couple of years, making it a great pack for kids ages ~8-11. We also appreciate the ventilated back, pockets for keeping safety items organized, and built in whistle. This is the same as the Talon pack. I'm not sure why Osprey has designated some colors for boys and others for girls. The fit and sizing is identical, so pick whichever color works for you.

She loves it!

Brought the bag for my niece and she loves it. She’s been learning how to best use all its pockets and fixings and just seems to be so pleased with it as a gift. It’s hit the spot and I’m milking any great auntie points there!!

Built for heavy outdoor use!

We have an older version of this and I cannot recommend this enough for a youth adventurer. My son started hiking the high peaks of New York State at 7 years old— this was his first (and current) day pack! Hundreds of miles and many camping trips later, it still fits him at 9yrs old. My whole family has Osprey packs because they are thoughtfully built. This particular pack has loop holes on the outside that you can add carabiners to and hang a sleeping bag to for overnight trips, or attach snowshoes for winter hiking. My son is able to carry the 10 essentials (minus a map/compass), plus extra layers for the Northeast elements, all his snacks, and a 2.5L water bladder (held in the exterior back of the pack!) For overnight trips, he carries his sleeping bag and extra clothes, in addition to his daypack items. There's not much more space after all of this, but it's about the max a child should carry. The side pockets are perfect for holding your child's summit Gatorade, and there's a front mesh pocket for storing a stuffy or special friend for their adventure. My only grunt is after so many butt slides on granite slabs, the mesh pockets begin to rip. It's not the same material as the adult packs. We just patch and use though!
