Ever so Slightly larger than previous iteration
At 6’ 205lbs the Large fits perfectly. The previous iteration was too narrow in the shoulders and looked a little off on me. But of course the XL was too big for me. It seems that I’m one of the few people who think the new revisions fit better. I am by no means overweight. I’m muscular and athletic. I’m constantly biking, hiking, and climbing. This jacket is perfect for those things as well as a day to day jacket. I still wish it had the old cuffs from 2017. These glued cuffs with the bunched up elastic aren’t the most comfortable but at least they made them a little wider this time. The 2020 version used to get stuck on my wrists all the time. Overall a good revision.
Definite downgrade
Compared to the previous version this is definitely a step down in materials and fit. Fleece lining is now thinner and overall the material feels much cheaper. The jacket now lacks that premium comfortable feel I loved about my prior Gamma MX. Although Arcteryx claim the fit in the medium is unchanged, after trying on my old version and this one, the revised version is not as fitted through the body, unfortunately. Overall, I'm quite disappointed, as I've owned 5 of the hooded and non-hooded MX jackets over time. All this on top of the fact that it costs 30% more than the previous one. It looks like I'm going to have to start searching for an alternative soft-shell for daily use.
Well-designed jacket
I love the sleeves are not too long and the cuffs are perfectly designed / contoured so as to not extend over the palm of your hand. The jacket is light but provides decent warmth, which is perfect for autumn / winter in Paris. The fit through the body is roomy and also not too long, which is also good for layering and daily usage.
Too Tight, weird sizing.
The Gamma MX in Medium fits much tighter than expected. I typically wear a Medium in Arc’teryx jackets like the standard Gamma, but this MX version feels restrictive — especially under the arms — making it difficult to layer comfortably. Unfortunately, it’s too tight for practical use and I wouldn’t recommend it.
Forestor's Pov
Wearing my Atom hoody in the woods strictly as a mid layer, I was always hesitant wearing it without a shell. My Atom SL pilled really hard in the first week. Upon buying the Gamma MX from Unbound Gear and Apparel, I feel confident wearing it to work. Hiking through brush and young second growth.
I love this jacket
I love this jacket. Lightweight but warm. A great fit for a tall guy (6'3" - XL). Color (solitude) is very cool. A number of people have remarked positively upon seeing it. I bought it to wear daily, but also to stick in the bottom of a back pack when hiking in the shoulder seasons or at altitude
Needs pit zips!!!
This jacket used to be awesome! I had one for years - great protection from wind and cold when climbing on my tele's and then threw a hard-shell over it for the downhills. I finally need to replace it but the new model no longer has pit-zips which are a must-have for the climbing :-(
EXPENCIVE TRACK TOP
Compared to the previous version this is definitely a step down in materials. Very soft and comfortable inside, but not feel like shell jacket. Pockets fine. Slimmer than Gamma MX hoody. As very many other customers I'm worrying about the materials all over with Arcteryx.
Sadly - no longer available with pit zips!!!
Such a shame that you can no longer get this jacket with pit zips. If you are the type of person who charges hard uphill, you need protection from wind and moisture while being able to let off steam!
Warmer than the Gamma, with better material.
Compared to the regular Gamma series, the MX version is thicker, features a fleece lining, and offers waterproof and windproof capabilities, making it better suited for outdoor mountaineering.
