Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

Let me start this by acknowledging that I am not, and won't be, a runner. That said I am starting hiking now that I am retired. I have suffered for years with tired and sore feet while traveling and walking long distances which has been so frustrating. I decided to go to a running store and get a fitting/suggestions and ended up with HOKA which are very comfortable but not enough when traveling. I went to REI, explaining my issues and these were suggested- I bought due to the great return policy for members. I absolutely love them and am so grateful that I trusted REI- my problem seems solved. I am going to get another pair that are not all weather because they seem to run on the hot side so will use them in cooler weather. LOVE THESE!
These shoes were great for canicross races with heavy mud and puddles. I didn't slip and slide and finished with dry feet. But yesterday I ran early morning on dewy grass trails and my feet were soaked after 2.5 miles so I'm a little disappointed. For size, I find them roomy enough for my wider foot and they fit the same as my older Altras. The newer timps no longer fit me so lone peak will be my new trail shoe. Love the purple color and get many compliments.
Absolutely love the color, fit, and quality of these shoes. I’ve hiked in them for a year now and they are so supportive and have amazing grip even on the steepest hikes. Fell in deep mud and my feet stayed dry. They’re also super cute, I love the pastel orange accents. Would 100% buy again!
Love the wide toe shape and it’s comfy- I bought for a decent price too!
Seriously disappointed with Altra shoes this year - the construction and design are horrible I've tried every hiking boot and shoe this year and have returned them all and I am a diehard Altra fan, which is why I was so determined to just find one option. And don't even get me started on the hideous colors and designs for women we do not want Barney colors or any other outrageous combo we want a everyday color that goes with everything like the men's options - black and orange or black and blue, most of us are outdoorsy and we want shoes that won't show everything and don't scream girly.

Shoes are super comfortable. Too wide in the arch area - laces pulled super tight and causes folds over toe box area. But the main pro is something like an air pocket in the sole of the shoe which makes noise when stepping on uneven ground.
Don't get me wrong, these are nice to look at! But they are so narrow that just trying them around the house caused my foot to cramp so bad, I couldn't even take them on a run. Toe area has ample space, but the midfoot is super narrow. I also noticed this with a few other newer models of Altra shoes with the original fit having the same issue. Also, why do they not have any wide options, and when they do, they only have them in the most boring colors? Those of us with wider feet love fun colors too!

I recently purchased this shoe for the room in the toe box and its waterproof feature. I liked the shape of the shoe allowing for the toes to naturally spaly out when in motion yet they could have been a bit more roomy to really capitalize on that particular feature. Even with a custom orthotic with a metatarsal pad, I found that my feet were really sore and tired because of the lack of cushioning. This brand should expand on the toe box for the splaying action and add the cushioning of the Hoka!
Good shoe for everyday. I haven't tried hiking in them, but I'm sure they will be great. The toe box is wide enough and very comfortable.
I'm a huge Altra advocate, but not anymore... I'm a 5'5" 116lb female (athletic build) & wear a woman's 6.5 Wide (and I have high arches -__-). Their Lone Peak Trail Runners were the only shoes on the market I could find that were comfortable enough to hike in (many 14ers including Mt. Whitney); I raved to all my friends that they HAD to get these shoes. I bought a newer pair of the Lone Peaks (because I finally blew out of my LP 5s), but I'm sending them back immediately. I tried on the new ones without a sock and already they were too narrow and my toes were hitting the front. I should have listened to the other reviews that stated similar issues, but I had to try them for myself. PLEASE BRING BACK WIDE SHOES. You are serving a widely (pun intended) underserved community for outdoor enthusiasts with wide feet.
