Nice small pan for 2 people. Heavy pan cooks evenly over campfire. But too heavy to put on top of a single burner. It's deep so good for stews too.
I use this at home to make pancakes and it is surprisingly easy to cook with. I seasoned it once with vegetable oil months ago and have cleaned it a few times with steel wool since. After heating up some vegetable oil to make pancakes, I just need to dislodge them gently with a silicone spatula and they pop right off cleanly. I recommend this material if you're moving away from synthetic non-stick cookware.
I only give this pan 4 stars because the size gives it extremely limited utility. It's a small pan perfect for a single camper and a one-pan meal, which makes it a great size for backpacking, but it's just too heavy for that. I'd much rather have an aluminum non-stick or titanium pan in that case. So it's weight keeps it limited to car camping...but the 10-inch is so much more versatile, and you can probably spare the space and weight if you're in a car. Already have the 10"? I recommend getting two of those before getting one of each. Build quality is excellent, and I love the hard durable finish. I tried to season it like I would with cast iron, but not only is it unnecessary, but the season beaded up and resulted in a mottled surface. Just use oil or butter and a stainless spatula, and you're good to go! I also prefer to remove the handle instead of folding it. You can nest things inside this way, but it's nice having both options.
I bought two of these, one small and one large. Used the larger pan on two recent car camping trips and it worked great. I followed instructions for seasoning it, had no problems with anything sticking. It's lighter than my cast iron skillet and packs smaller with the folding handle. Cleanup is easy as well.
I'm obsessed with this pan, I've been using it in my kitchen over my 12" hexclad when I can. GSI put this out in a 12" with a cover please! Requires really low heat and nothing sticks to it after the seasoning stage.
