Rugged child carrier with thoughtful features
This is a really excellent, rugged, soft structured carrier. I have three kids including one new baby, and have spent a lot of hours with babies and children in carriers, trying many different styles. This is definitely the most durable and toughest one I've ever used. I tested this carrier with my newborn (just now 3 months) and my very petite 5 year old who falls within the size limits of the carrier. This is an expensive carrier, but it is really solid, built more like a quality backpacking pack. I have many canvas soft structured carriers that are comfortable, but don't wash well and really pick up dirt and are uncomfortable when wet. This is the carrier I take on hikes or would take on a backpacking trip. The fabric is like a nice Osprey backpack and wipes down well and is not uncomfortable when damp. This is not the carrier I usually grab for a few minutes around the house when I am taking baby in and out often, but it is the one I would pack for a backpacking trip or a vacation. This carrier is not cheap but it also comes with a lot of features that I think make it a great value. There is an integrated head cover for the child that seems to be water resistant. There are also removeable drool pads included on the straps, which are really important for keeping the straps in good condition. You often need to buy those separately. The main body that holds the child has a really nice, open mesh panel for great ventilation. The straps are also mesh with great padding that has ventilation holes. The shape of the body panel is also more open on the sides as compared to other carriers I have, that allows more air to flow between your body and the child. The most unique feature of this carrier is the extra wide, extra padded, velcro waist strap. I was initially skeptical of this feature because I thought it would be more difficult to put on, and potentially wake a sleeping child (velcro can be LOUD). This giant waistband is so soft and comfortable and adjustable. This was especially comfy when carrying my heavier child. This is what you want to wear if you are going to be carrying a kid all day on a hike. I have not tried to see how this would work carrying a backpack with a waist strap at the time as wearing a child on the front. This huge band is the only part of the carrier that I feel gets a bit warm, but trade off for comfort. I recorded a video opening and closing the velcro so you can hear that while it is loud, it isn't as loud as I feared and I have successfully opened and closed the velcro while keeping baby asleep. This waistband has a comically large, multi-page safety warning tag that says not to remove but if you don't, you don't have the benefit of the ventilating mesh in that spot. This carrier also has thoughtful storage that is easy to access. There are open stretch pockets under the body panel that are secure enough for a phone or map. There is a larger pocket with the head cover in it, but there is additional room in that pocket as well as space to tuck small items. For younger babies, this carrier is a lot like other soft structured carriers in that it fits, but is not ideal until they are a little bigger, around 3-4 months old. Now that my baby is 3 months (and a small 3 months) but has more head control and enjoys looking around, this carrier is a favorite. I am able to nurse him in the carrier if I adjust the straps long, loosen and lower the waistband, and monitor baby's position carefully. My bigger kid does not really like being in a carrier but allowed me to carry her on my back long enough to feel how comfortable this carrier is with a heavier kid. Moving between front, inward facing carry, and back carry is a pretty simple switch. I don't have a kid that can use the forward facing carry yet. In summary, this is a unique and really tough child carrier. This should last through several children and will give several years of comfortable use from young baby through older toddler or even preschool if you have a smaller kid.
Quality and Comfort - Highly Recommend
I've always been a huge fan of Osprey backpacks, so it's a real pleasure to see that same level of quality and thoughtful design applied to a baby carrier. This carrier is incredibly comfortable to wear, and judging by how quickly my little girl falls asleep in it, it's just as cozy for her. I often use it around the house when she’s fussy; it lets me soothe her while keeping my hands free. It was also a game-changer during air travel, navigating TSA and airport lines was so much easier with her secure and snug, and both of my hands free. We've taken it on several hikes as well, and it’s wonderfully convenient... quick to throw on, and comfortable for extended use. As for the carrier itself, it’s packed with smart features. The standout for me is the hip belt. It's super comfortable and excellent at distributing her weight to my hips, making long stretches of wearing her feel effortless. It’s clearly inspired by the hip belts in Osprey’s hiking packs. There’s even a clever little safety catch built into the Velcro closure, so the belt stays secure even if the Velcro loosens. I also really appreciate the small mesh pocket in front, perfect for storing pacifiers, tissues, and soon enough, a few snacks. The front compartment includes a built-in rain/sunshade that attaches to the shoulder straps to help protect the baby from the elements. All in all, it’s a fantastic product that I wholeheartedly recommend.
Difficult to load, but great once on
It was very difficult to get on and off. The waistband does not come apart easily - requiring it to be pulled over the head or stepped into. It is a huge deal because it adds a big step with a very mobile child. Otherwise, tried for front and back carry - able to carry a 23 and 43 pound child. The smaller child worked in both positions and the older child fit in the back position. Once loaded, both kids were stable and comfortable for both the child and wearer. Despite warm weather both kid and parent were comfortable.
This is all you need in a carrier
We have gone through several carriers during our daughter's first two years, and this Osprey Poco has by far been the most comfortable we’ve experienced. Admittedly, our previous carriers were either hand me downs from other family or second hand purchases, but we felt we had done our research and did our best to not just accept what came our way. We also tried to make sure we had them properly adjusted for use (though going though that process every time we switched who was using the carrier proved tedious). Despite all that effort, the Poco is a no-brainer for us—super comfortable for the user and child, very easy to adjust on the fly with the large Velcro strap when swapping users during a walk or hike, and still always felt very secure for keeping our young one safe.
good hiking carrier, maybe not for primary carrier
We bought this about a few weeks ago and so far it seems ok. The weight is distributed more in the hips than the upper back unlike other carriers/wraps I have tried. I find it to be much more comfortable this way! Unfortunately, we started using this with our newborn once he hit 8 lbs and he still seems a bit small for it, following the TICKS guidelines for safe baby wearing. He seems to sit a bit too low despite making adjustments. I am hoping once he’s a bit bigger or taller, it will work better as this carrier is great otherwise! The hip belt is stiff to adjust and requires a little effort but I’m assuming it will get easier with more use. It is easy to use this carrier by yourself which is a bonus!
In love with this carrier
I bought this carrier after trying loads (and I mean loads) of others first. I have a bad back and have done for years so I was super conscious that the right carrier had to be comfy for me and my baby. It does take a little practice to put it on on your own but once you've got it, it's fantastic. The waist band is super supportive, it's really comfy, I love that it's mesh in lots of places so we don't get too hot. It's perfect. We use it round the house as well as out and about, on dog walks, you name it, it comes with us
I’m really pleased with the
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’m really pleased with the Poco™ Soft Child Carrier from Osprey! It’s been a fantastic purchase for our family hikes. My daughter feels very comfortable in it and often falls asleep during our walks, which shows how cozy and secure she feels. The carrier is easy to carry, and the straps are comfortable for me as a parent. The design is practical, and I love how well-made it feels. I highly recommend this child carrier to any parents who enjoy outdoor adventures with their little ones!
I really like this pack
I really like this pack - the mesh, the material, the quality - but there are a few missing features that make it less of a slam dunk. First - there’s no carry bag to fold it into and put away. Osprey always has a rain cover tucked into a pocket, a mesh carry bag would have been ideal. Second and the most critical - you can only get the baby in by unhooking across your back. Lots of other carriers have a front hook for putting the baby in or taking them out. It’s hard to reach between your shoulder blades and keep the baby secure at the same time. And finally - I wish the support across the back was better. It has hip support, but otherwise nothing across your mid/upper back except the hook to secure the shoulders. I’ve tried tightening as far as I can go, but ultimately I can’t wear this for long walks without my mid/upper back aching.
Avid Canadian Rockies Hiking Mom
This soft child carrier is AMAZING! I am able to load up all my baby supplies, hiking gear, and 10 essentials to the carrier. The fabric and durability is perfect for trails and the thicker waistband has brought a lot of comfort for me while hiking with my toddler. Your cell phone fits in the front pocket!! Big win to easily capture those trail memories. Thank you Osprey for making outdoor adventures with babies even better.
The most versatile! Good for Mom & Dad
LOVE the new Osprey Carrier. We have had our baby in it since she was a newborn and love it because it’s breathable and fits both of us. The shade is a nice bonus too where many carriers don’t come with one and it has pockets!! Ideal for walks and hiking.
