This is a great winter coat. This jacket keeps me warm standing around in temperatures in the mid 20s °F. It is relatively wind proof, but breathable enough that I don't get overheated. I've worn this during my bicycle commute in the city during cold temperatures. My commute is short, but I'm riding at maximum output for the majority of the journey with a fleece underneath and I did not feel over heated. The hood is insulated, although helmet compatible, fits nicely under my bike helmet. The body mapping of the insulation really helps with body temperature regulation. I really love the length! The drop hem nicely covers by backside and the front comes down just above the bottom of my pants zipper (many other brands cut their coats too short in the front). Cuffs have nice elastic on the inside half and Velcro adjusters in the backside half. Highly recommend!
I'm extremely impressed with the versatility of this jacket. It feels so thin for a synthetic jacket, about as thick as my Patagonia Nano Puff hoody, yet it's somehow much warmer when it needs to be, and surprisingly breathable when you need it. I've had this jacket on trails and around town now, from 22f to 50f, and I'm just in awe of how well it can handle both. Of course at 22f, it needed a good poly hoody underneath, but I love that I don't have to take it off as soon as I get up to speed on the trails like I do with my nano puff.
I am an outdoor professional and have experience with other light weight puffies. Two weeks ago, when i bought this Xenair Alpine, I was excited to find a warm mid/outer layer that was decently breathable. Worked great my first 3 days of usage on the slopes but first day winter fat biking, I caught a twig and it left a 9" tear. The material didint put up much more resistance than a sheet of toilet paper. I reached out to RAB directly but the response I got was super defensive. REI invited me to bring into a store for a first hand inspection which is fair. I'd say this item is great as a mid layer (negates most of the breathbility) but should never be used, as advertised as a durable outer layer for anything more than around town use. if you look at RAB's product comparison, this jacket is described as both but really not up to the task of either. FWIW, they offered a paid service to repair but were not responsive when I asked about the costs.
I was looking for a new lightweight insulated jacket when I saw the marmalade coloured Xenair Alpine Insulated Jacket. I must say it was the colour that first attracted to the jacket so I tried it on. The jacket speaks for itself - not the colour! It is lightweight but very warm and cosy and a great fit. The attached hood is not obtrusive when not being worn and sits neatly outside the jacket. Easy to use zip and good number of pockets.
Awesome jacket, breathable for more active wear and activity and warm in the right spots. Warmer than the Patagonia nano puff, but not too warm like the down sweater. This is “Goldilocks” for me. Fabric repels light rain or mist, and seems like it might tear easily even though it hasn’t yet. But feels soft and cozy, I wear it fly fishing and daily in the fall and winter in PNW.
Love this jacket, live in Wisconsin and got this just before the season started. The fit was a bit snug (to be fair I’m a bit rounder than I like), I’m 5’11”, 210. Insulation is great, I’m super comfortable out walking my dogs and have to unzip it when I’m out shoveling. Great product, look forward to putting it on everyday.
Steer clear of the Xenair Alpine. Function on mine was great and as described. That said, the shell material tears easily. A twig the size of a pencil lead out a 9” rip in it. Put up no more resistance than a sheet of toilet paper. Too bad as I really like the fit very much.
I returned the jacket, unfortunately. Mostly liked it but the two external chest pockets felt very flimsy (no padding at all, just a thin layer of fabric). Also had no internal pockets, which would make a difference. Otherwise, well-made, and loved the longer back length!
I just bought this jacket for a ski-touring and cold weather bottom of the bag use or stand around in the mountains kind of puffy (replacing a down Arc'teryx Thorium). I am very sweaty, and that jacket, fabric/down just wasn't cutting it, so I decided to go synthetic. First - fit. I'm larger/athletc 6'1" 230ish, broad chest/torso/shoulders. Usually wear XL in most things. I could have fit into XL, but it would not have offered much layering room. Sized to XXL (thankfully) and it's perfect. This jacket is extremely comfortable. It feels like/airy, mobile, and like it moves with you just perfectly. The fabric is stretchy and breathable. If I wore my old down puffy inside, I would start to feel clammy very quickly. This breaths so much better - quantum air is awesome. I was worried about 133gram insulation being too much. And for touring - that will certainly be the case. Although I haven't worn this moving in the mountains yet, but wearing it inside and outside - the combination of thicker insulation, but breathable fabrics hasn't shown to overheat yet. I'm comfortably sitting inside with it now - and it's not too warm. This does not pack down quite as small as my old Thorium and is heavier by a but, but it's more featured, and I think will prove to be more versatile and useful. My only concern is that the fabric may not hold up. . . but it's gear - meant to be used and that's why patches exist. Time will tell.
Had it in a few times now . As it’s not been cold enough up in the northern hills of England . It’s warm and very adaptive at regulating your body heat . I might even get another colour I like it that good .
