Temperature ratings are intended as a guideline to help you compare products, rather than a guarantee of warmth, since many different factors contribute to your comfort while you sleep. Backpacking bags are typically rated for temperature according to an independent testing protocol—currently International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 23537, though some older items followed European Norm (EN) 13537. Testing is based on a person wearing one base layer and a pair of socks, sleeping on an insulated surface with a minimum R-value of 5.38.

Each bag then gets 2 ratings: the Comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "cold sleeper" comfortable, and the Lower Limit rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "warm sleeper" comfortable. Some brands determine their own temperature rating by aligning to the Comfort rating for women’s bags, to the Lower Limit rating for men’s bags, or somewhere in the middle for nongendered bags.

spacious cocoon with interesting features

The wide version is spacious enough to pair it up with my older 15 degree bag without compression. I've not tested that in the cold overnight yet, but so far the fit seems like it would work well for layering. Unzipping the foot box let me walk around without getting out of the sleeping bag, though it helped to undo the main zipper a bit from the bottom, too, to be able to walk a bit better. I really like that feature. The wide ribbon band along the zipper seemed to do a great job of avoiding snags! I hadn't realized beforehand that there was a small zipper on the right side to make an arm hole if you're hanging out in the sleeping bag and want to reach both arms out without getting out of the bag. Unexpected but nice! The head area has separate cinching straps for the horizonal baffle near the neck and for around the face hole. I think in cold weather the face cinching part will be really important, since otherwise the head area of the bag is very big. There's definitely room for putting a small pillow (i.e. a stuff sack full of clothing) on the inside of the bag with you, but without cinching the face area strings, the opening is wide and could be drafty. So far I love it! Medium size is definitely longer than I need (5'5" tall) but I wanted the option of nesting the bag over another or lending it to a taller camping partner.
