I have been using the REI Half Dome tents for the last 20-25 years. I am looking forward to this newest model. I started using the half dome when I was in the Boy Scouts (2001-2006) and carried a half dome at Philmont Scout Ranch. I have used that tent in 32 states and 3 Countries. I will be using this newest model in Canada next year and am so excited to be sharing it with my wife and newborn son as we explore the Dempster Highway to Tuktoyaktuk NT

My fifth REI tent, 2nd dome 3...

My recent Dome 3(7.2 lbs) is 2.1 lbs heavier than my old Dome 3(5.1 lbs). Yes, that includes the footprint on both! My old schock cords had worn out. I decided to replace the old tent with the newer. I'm disappointed with the extra weight for substantially the same tent. Wish I knew why a really great design would shift to a heavier nylon reminiscent of cheap tents found at big box stores.

Quality Craftsmanship, Innovative Solutions

Pioneer Camping in the North Georgia Mountains. This tent is very simple to erect, and I completed the whole setup in less than 10 minutes without reading any instructions for the first time, beating a scattered shower of rain. I like how the tent poles have an indention on the tips that allows them to remain in place during set up, preventing them from coming out of the rings on the tent during setup alone. The footprint is a huge plus. The footprint conveniently clips to the base of the tent. It provides a nice water-resistant base for the tent to send on. Huge bonus. I like the elastic paracord on the tent poles. It keeps the whole pole assembly in one piece. The tent is lightweight but durable and compacts to a reasonable size to use while backpacking. The rain fly was dependable and breathable and did not allow the humid air to condense and cause water droplets inside the tent. The tent is very spacious for two. I am 6 foot and was very comfortable.

Just right size, weight, durability

Our REI base camp six tent has served us well through wind, rain, rocks, mud for 20 years. I am hoping this tent will help us “downsize” when we’re back to just two camping instead of the whole family. This is not a lightweight backpacking tent, but it is notably lighter than our 6 person. It feels just as durable as our big REI tent, and it has the huge screened area for airflow and star viewing, lots of pockets and gear loops, and 2 vestibules for packs and shoes. There isn’t a gear loft, but I think that would get in the way due to the lower total height of this tent. I do like the fairly vertical walls, and It feels spacious for 2+. The storage bag is cool-easy to stuff everything in. I was able to put it up and take it down by myself. Wind gusts made the fly a little tricky to secure on the ridgeline, but everything else was easy and straightforward. If there were directions for set up, I lost them, but I think it would be impossible to set up wrong. The only things I missed (noticed them on take-down) were the little red Velcro tabs on the underside of the fly, which secure to the poles. The tent stakes supplied seem awesome! Lightweight but sturdy. You need at least 4 for the corners of the tent, and then 4 more for the fly. The remaining 4 stakes are for additional guy lines which I would view as optional. The footprint is included, and comes pre-attached to the corners of the tent, but it can easily be separated for drying and separating dirty/cleaner storage in the tent bag. Overall, I’m a fan!

Great Tent as Expected from the Half Dome series

Fantastic no frills tent for posting up with the family for a few nights. My partner and I took our (almost) 2 year old camping in Delaware State Forest for 2 nights during a abnormally mild weekend in March for our first camping trip of 2025. We took this tent as our primary shelter for it's first time out with us for a shakedown and to see how it performs. Setup was super easy, it's the same standard pole system you expect in Half Dome tents, we bypassed the setup instructions and just went with intuition without running into any issues so I would say setup is a breeze. The only pause was getting the rainfly on, we had a bit of a debate about which way it actually went. Also, I was really happy to see that it came with nice aluminum stakes and not those flimsy wire stakes a lot of tents come with. It took us a while to unpack our sleeping pads and blankets in it because our toddler immediately made it his castle so we took the opportunity to set up for dinner. When we finally did get to bedding down we had more room than expected. Two large adults and a 2-year old plus some comforts all fit in without issue. If we swapped out the toddler for another adult I don't think it would have been too cramped but maybe not as much room for gear. It had plenty of head space so sitting up to read a book or getting a sweater on was easy enough. And either side had a large vestibule so we could our boots and some other non-critical stuff out of the tent at night, but also out of the rain that passed on the 2nd evening. We car-side camped with this tent, and though it's pretty light I don't think I would take it backpacking with me. The bag it packs into is a first for me, it's almost a canoe-shaped duffle style drawstring bag rather than the top-loading tube I'm used to. That made all the materials easy to get in and out, but wasn't really convenient if you were going for minimal storage footprint and packability. Overall I'm really happy with it, I'm excited to get out with it more this summer and spend a few nights without the rainfly so we can see some stars.

not a fan of the tent pole design

The new pole system is ugly. Not sure of when it was redesigned but the union is massive and bulky. If these unions were not so large, the pole system would pack away much smaller which would make the tent pack away with less length, which is huge in my book. The "dot design" is not worth the massive component. Half doom 2 and 3 have the same pole style and I am not a fan. The dimensions of the tent are nice. As usual the quality is not missing. The tent pole system is my only critique. I do not feel these unions are not of quality craftsmanship.

Fantastic Tent for a Quick Getaway in the Woods!

I recently took the REI Half Dome 3 tent on a camping trip with my young son, and I couldn’t be more impressed. As a dad who’s trying to make camping trips fun and comfortable for us both, this tent really delivered. It was super easy to set up, which is a big deal when you’re wrangling a curious little one who wants to explore everything. We had the tent up and ready to go in no time. The space inside was perfect for the two of us —plenty of room for our sleeping bags, gear, and even a little extra space for my son to play around in when we weren’t out hiking or cooking dinner. The mesh panels kept things breathable, and even though it rained one night, we stayed dry and cozy inside. The rainfly was solid and kept us sheltered, which gave me peace of mind knowing we were protected in wet weather. One of the things I really liked was how much extra space the vestibules gave us for storing muddy boots and gear, keeping the inside nice and neat. It’s the little details like that which made the camping experience better. Overall, the REI Half Dome 3 is a great investment for families who love to camp. It’s tough, comfortable, and has a lot of thoughtful features that make life easier when you’re out in the wilderness with a kid. Highly recommend it!

This tent is ready to go!

Tent came in and couldn’t wait to set it up (new gear gets me excited!) so I did it right in my living room just to see how easy it would be when out. Love that it comes with a footprint already and that I don’t have to purchase it separately. 2 people in here would be very comfortable with plenty of space for a doggo. The poles are very secured and strong. Excellent zipper quality. I think it’s a better design than my current tent I use and it’s one of the pricier brand tents. This tent is ready to go, have new adventures and make memories.

In the wind....

I got this tent for quick trips at Mt Diablo SP, very near to home. I think it would work for backpacking, but I no longer am able to do that type of hiking due to knee replacements. I would suggest replacing the pegs with steel versions. Certainly, on Mt Diablo, the rocky soils eat thin aluminum pegs. One night, we camped there on an unexpectedly warm February night to check out a new sleeping bag. Weather forecasts for both entrances were OK. However, we camped at Juniper -3,000 ft. it was windy when we set up. Then it started to blow more strongly. After dinner, we needed to seek refuge in the tent. We found ourselves in a major windstorm. I learned winds were at 40+ mph, with gusts up to 60 mph. The tent flapped and bowed in a terrifying manner. But it stayed anchored (we had attached the accessory lines) and it stayed intact. No tears, no bent poles. I don't think it was designed for such winds. It was an unpleasant night. At daybreak, we packed up and headed home. With a low temp of 55°, it was not much of a test of the sleeping bag.
