The Aerios 35 is not a particularly good nor particularly bad pack. I've used it now on 2 different trips: 1) Approx 75km in varied weather in Denmark and 2) Approx 225km in modern but dry conditions in Portugal. Like another user, I also use this pack in lieu of my Bora for the lighter, faster trips. Overall it performs well and is indeed quite comfortable. I can recommend this product however like many of Arc'teryx more recent products, inflated pricing and questionable design choices suggest they've moved farther and farther away from the (in my opinion better) choices of the past. The pricing has remained somewhat consistent over the years but the products, not so much. While you can do a whole lot worse, you probably can do a whole lot better as well.
Hi Christopher. Thanks for sharing your feedback on the Aerios 35 Backpack. We are sorry to hear that it did not suit your needs on linger trips. We truly appreciate your detailed comments and we will make sure to relay them to our design team.
Extremely comfortable and lightweight. At 35L, it may seem like a large pack but in reality, the pack compresses closer to that of a 28L pack - this is due to the roll down compartment similar to that of a dry bag. The frame is really solid and it comes in 3 different sizes. The biggest plus for me was the shoulder straps. These running style straps are the most comfortable I've ever worn. As a man with a large torso and broad shoulders, finding a pack with comfortable straps is hard to come by. The only thing that would make this pack even better would be more outer pockets.
I have done over 500km of fastpacking with this pack and it has worked out great. Everything from overnighters to 5 day epics. The ability to synch it down when not fully loaded has allowed me to run in it carrying 20L~ but having the support needed for a heavier loads. When fully loaded at 35L I still found it comfortable and had the ability to hike fast and even run in it. Easy access to water and snacks up front eliminate the need for unnecessary stops and allow you to travel fast all day.
I haven’t used this yet, but I have packed it up, walked around, and played around with the various straps/loops — I’m so impressed. My intended use is a general travel bag and Camino bag, and I see the exterior side pockets can perfectly accommodate hiking poles on one side and hiking umbrella on the other (plus still room for water bottles) and hold it all secure with the highly customizable compression straps (which I didn’t see/understand until I had the bag in front of me). The bag is extremely comfortable (although I haven’t walked far it in yet, it’s definitely the most comfortable on initial fitting out of the 4 other brands of backpacks I’ve had over the years). The running vest style straps (I already have soft flasks that can fit) and wide hip belt are exactly what I was looking for. I think another review said the hip pocket was a little small and I agree with this. I will probably add another pouch in the hip area (or try a fanny pack with it) for my valuables. It’s also easy to see how to stash a shell and insulating layer for easy access on the outside in addition to everything else. I think my search is over and this is the perfect bag for me. I already bought another for my boyfriend, and I’m considering buying another for my son (who will grow into it in a few years) and another for my best friend while it’s on sale (and just in case changes made in future versions aren’t improvements). I see a lot of critique of arcteryx for price and quality these days so I might be lucky, but my other most recent experience (gamma pants and shorts from a couple years ago) I would also give design and quality an A+ for my use (I’m not doing anything technical, just general life and travel).
Overall a great pack. Lightweight and water-resistant materials make it a great choice for inclement weather hiking. Easily enough capacity to get you through any day hike and an overnight. Great side pockets that I use for a large water bottle and a lightweight chair. Good support and ventilation to keep your back from being drenched in sweat. Only thing I'd change is to make the front zipper waterproof. Love the hydration vest style pockets.
Likes: durable water sheeting material (PNW), enough volume and quick stash side pockets for winter or when the dog is along, close fitting vest for scrambles and runs, daisy chains, adjustable. Dislikes: no bladder clip, meh sized hip pocket, I think the extended roll top is overkill considering the weight limits.
you might wonder how can a backpack cost this much but then you realize you need instructions when you get it. definitely the apple of equipment.
