Best all-round hoody!
Seriously fantastic functional hoody! I just summited Mt. Whitney and used this jacket for my top layer as there was no rain or snow forecasted. It was SO warm I ended up only needing it for the last few miles before the 99 switchback when there was a very cool patch—plus hiking in the dark. I use it walking my dog on cold mornings. I’m 6’1 and sized up to a xl for layering room and it’s perfect!
Fantastic for ranging conditions.
Fantastic jacket for ranging conditions. I use it daily for cool morning walks; and it was my mid-layer for hiking Mt. Whitney. This jacket keeps me very warm and I love the huge chest pocket. I sized up for a roomy fit and love how easily I can layer.
Lightweight and so breathable!
It's an absolute winner! The fit is spot on, incredibly light, and highly breathable—perfect for all kinds of activities. It offers great water resistance with its DWR finish, works as a solid windbreaker, and layers effortlessly. Definitely a piece I’d buy again!
Light compact and warm.
Fits true to size. Very warm for its weight and compactness. Great as a light warm casual layer as well as an active layer for colder ski touring days. Very versatile
Go to Snow Midlayer
I love this as a midlayer for winter hiking, snowboarding and splitboarding. It's really breathable which helps maintain a comfortable temperature- I tour/hike fast (no talking or stopping!) It's a warmer layer, so will pair with the Satoro Merino Crew in cold weather -8 to 0*, and the Lana long sleeve for warmer temps. I've worn consistently for two seasons (120+ days) and have had no pilling. My only con is if you sweat needs a strong detergent as it holds onto smells (as I find most synthetic fabrics do (I have a sensitive nose.)
Perfect jacket
The Proton is by far my favorite jacket, ever. This is because it’s lightweight yet incredibly warm and breathable. It’s great for cardio outside in the winter and looks good for a casual jacket as well. This is not a super packable jacket so it’s not the best for something like backpacking. For other applications it’s just the best. As always, Arc’teryx has nailed the fit on this with a nice athletic cut that feels like it’s custom-tailored.
Great Layer!
The first time I used this jacket was on a ski traverse in the coast mountains. I wore it as a midlayer, over a merino baselayer. It was the perfect layer for this trip! It kept me warm and protected from the wind. The insulation was soft against my body and the right degree of warmth. The chest pocket was perfect for phone / snacks.
UNICORN PIECE
This is the unicorn of jackets and I wear it all the time. ALL THE TIME. It is my go to piece for AT, running, hiking, cross country, any high output activity in the winter where I need a little warmth and some breathability. Any time I wear it, which is all the time, the people I am with comment on how awesome it is. Other companies have started to do their own versions, but this is the best. The weight is perfect, the warmth is always good, from 0 to 40 degrees F. And I just vary what I layer with (a t-shirt or long sleeve in merino or tech material), and it's awesome. The fit is great, I am usually a small and the small fits well. I have two because i wear it so often and needed to work more colors in. My older one is from 2020, and it has held up to constant wear, the fabric has withstood a lot of wildnerness and doesn't have a rip or tear. I don't notice a huge difference in fit between the two, as other reviewers have suggested. I have the Atom, and I love that too, but if you're buying one, this is the one. :)
Disappointment, cheap, not worth the money
It’s a waste of money. I bought this not only for the product but the brand. “Arc’teryx” is renowned for their quality products and warranties but they aren’t what they once were. I have multiple Arc’teryx products and my proton coat disintegrated. The fabric is poor quality , I can’t believe it’s even advertised as “climbing and high output activities” it’s destroyed and I wore it to the grocery store! I emailed Arc’teryx about issues and they refused to honour their warranty on the fabric. The material literally rips apart under any strain. The main zipper split after 1 year and both pocket zipper broke shortly after. Unless their quality dramatically improves it’s not worth the price. Do better Arc’teryx.
Hi Zoe. Thanks for sharing your feedback on the Proton Hoody. We are sorry to hear about the issues you experienced with the fabric and zippers. We appreciate your comments and we will make sure to pass them to our team.
Chest pocket FTW!
I really like the proton, as it's everything you get in the Atom. However, you have a chest pocket with the same insulation, which makes a huge difference! I went up a size as I have large shoulders but smaller hips :)
