Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

These shoes are incredibly comfortable and lightweight. I tend to supinate a bit and so far they seem stable for that, I'm not seeing the wear on the outside of the sole that I sometimes see. However, I'm rating only 3 stars because after less than two months of wear one of the pieces of contrast color rubber on the sole started coming off. I re-glued it with Barge's (a cement we use at my job on shoe soles regularly) but now it is coming off again, as well as the same piece on the other shoe. It's too bad as I absolutely love the feel of this shoe and it looks like the Rivera 4 model has the same contrast color soles so I'm not optimistic the problem has been fixed. For a running shoe of this price and quality I expect better longevity.
The shoes came to me worn. Nothing in description or anything says that they were used so I don’t understand why I got a pair of used shoes. Two stars because the shoes themselves are decent. They’re just worn visibly
I have narrow feet and really like these shoes. Other shoes like the Olympus swallow my feet. These fit perfectly. Other reviews said the toe box isn’t wide but that’s not true. It is wide and plenty roomy if you have narrow feet. That’s who this particular shoe is designed for. If you have wide feet, go with a different model like the Olympus. My only issue is what others have mentioned, that the shoe laces don’t stay tied. Also the padding seems to wear down a bit over time (I’ve used them for over a year). I’d be interested in a shoe like this for narrow feet but with a bit more support in the sole.
I would have given these a 5 star, but sadly Altra chose to decrease the width of the toe-box. The wide toe box was the reason I bought my first pair of Altras (Rivera 2), and loved them so much. I have found if I push my foot into the shoe all the way to the end as I put them on, and wiggle my toes around before I lace them up, I am able to relieve any discomfort around the base of my big toe, but had I tried these on in a store I would likely not have purchased them.
I’ve purchased several Altra shoes, each with a wider toe box, so I hoped these would give me the same experience but I had to return them. The fit was too snug
Awful. So uncomfortable, they feel cheap. Usually love Altra shoes, but I’m moving on to a different brand. Very disappointment.
I read in other reviews that the shoelaces are short… and they really are. If you don’t need to tie them through the extra top holes, you should be okay but otherwise you’ll need new laces. Pretty big design flaw but otherwise I’ve loved these shoes plus, I got them on sale.
Feel smaller than my last Altras, same size. No protective band around the toe. Thinner inner sole. Disappointing.
I’ve been wearing ultras for a few years now due to pain in my pinky toe. The toebox in the previous ultra were great however this new one the Riviera three had a much narrow toolbox. I don’t know why they change the design, but they no longer work for me.
No matter how many different ways I tried to make this shoe comfortable for for the top of my right foot, I couldn’t do it. I’m not sure exactly what it was about this style that caused the joints on the top of my foot to be so inflamed, but I eventually reached the point where I had to stop wearing them. After trying countless ways of tying and lacing them, I just had to give up. It’s a shame, because otherwise the shoe was very comfortable. And stylish.
