Thule  Motion 3 Roof Box - XL

This cargo box is incredibly well designed from both an esthetics and functional point of view. The XL fits like a glove on our 2023 Highlander. I was really wanting to try the XXL but according to my measurements and the fitment chart provided by Thule, it appears the hatch would contact the box on that model. I went with the XL for peace of mind since I knew it would fit and it’s plenty of space for for our needs. We can easily fit two full sized suitcases and one carryon size with plenty of room around them to stuff other miscellaneous items. Installation was a breeze and took me less than 10 minutes. The lock and latching mechanism make opening and closing the box a breeze - it feels much smoother than the old Yakima Skybox I had before and overall this feels much higher quality. I’ve only had the carrier for a day so will update later with better pictures and more information on road noise and durability.

marking it 5 stars because it just works (more like 4.5 - read on).. Easy enough to install, the 'claw' locking mechanisms have held on to the THULE bars without issue, and space is plenty for my needs. I used this thing to make a move 200 miles away (20 + trips) and it took every bit of what was thrown in with load adjustment of course. The Only real complaint I have is that it can be a challenge to close at times.. Hand grip when wet or frosted is near zero. I have raked my fingers a few times when attempting to close it (no fun when very cold). Needs a rubberized grip or something to get a grab on it. The locking mechanism can be tricky at times, either unlocking it or getting it to lock.. other than that it has worked well and served its purpose.

Got a first generation Motion XT box. A lot of rust developed on metal parts under the box. Thule denied all warranty claiming I should not use the box everyday, and should be stored in a garage most of the time. So have in mind this product is intended for light use, and no warranty is really applicable.

My husband and I got the Motion 3 XL Low for our adventure van, a 1995 Mitsubishi Delica. Since the van is quite small and doesn't have a lot of interior storage, we needed a sizeable roof box for gear storage during our frequent camping trips. The Motion 3 XL Low is the perfect fit: it's sleek yet roomy, and opens from both sides which allows us easy access when we have other accessories on our roof, like our awning. It was incredibly easy to install (5 minutes or less, seriously). My husband and I both noticed that our van drives very smoothly with the box, which is an extra perk! Can't recommend this one enough.

Purchased the Thule Motion 3XL for a planned camping trip as my 2015 VW Sportwagon TDI has limited cargo space, even with the rear seats folded. Easily fit a 6 person tent, 2 sleeping bags/pads, 2 flannel blankets, 3 folding chairs and two small fold up tables @ 141 lbs. Mounted on the Thule WingBar Evo bars quickly and easily and still allowed the sunroof to tilt/open without interference. The Titan Glossy looks great, minimal wind noise and the aerodynamic shape only resulted in a 0.8 MPG loss in fuel economy. Great product and highly recommend without reservation!

Loving this box so far. Have the gloss black XL on my Subaru Ascent with aero bars. Installed in less than 10 minutes. Some very slight wind noise north of 65 mph, but barely noticeable. Gas mileage has taken maybe a 1 mpg hit on the highway, much better than I expected. Easily fit 3 carry ons and several loose items. Could def fit more. Interior straps do a good job of keeping things tied down; didn't notice any shifting or rattling during my 5+ hours driving. I haven't tried to un-rack it yet, but imagine it's no better or worse than other boxes of similar size.

We bought this for our NX to use for our cottage trips. Super versatile and can load so much things in it. Love the dual side openings. It’s been raining a lot in the past week and the inside stayed dry. Quiet on the highway, we barely hear any wind noises. Fuel economy give or take hasn’t been a concern. Installation was a breeze!

Great box with lots of room! Staff at Farmington UT REI were superb. The ability to open from either side is a game-changer. It's not super easy for a smaller person without long arms or a lot of upper body strength to close by yourself but with a bit of practice I'm sure it'll become easier. The lid is also a bit wobbly during closing but very secure once it's closed and I love the lock. I would hesitate to open it in a high wind but my caveats would apply for ANY cargo box of this size. Took less than 10 min to attach to the rack, very adjustable and very solid, driving with it was great! Highly recommend.

I bought this a month ago and I'm super glad I did it looks great

I bought this in the summer of 2024 for a road trip to Colorado. I have used it in July and this past February. I want to keep it but I simply cannot due to the following reasons. 1. Extremely hard to close if wet on top (rain, frost, snow), there is no place to get a good grip 2. It is challenging to close in general, you really have to have be up on top and yank it down hard, even then the latching mechanism is fussy (there cannot be anything even close to the sides of the box, I did not have it overfilled). For the price point and reputation of Thule, I expected better real world product testing. It looks amazing on my 2024 Grand Highlander and I wish I could keep it but I have been too frustrated with it on the 3 times I have used it and will be returning it.
