It is so sad to say that the newer Osprey packs are designed for maximum profits and not maximum hiker benefits. The latest Talon 22 is less usable than previous models. The pseudo Airscape design does not breathe. There is no way for air to circulate. Your back will be as sweaty as ever. While still rated at 22 liters it has less usable space. One good note is that the belt pockets are more user friendly. Osprey needs to look back at their better, more usable Talon 22. In addition, Osprey needs to design a breathable back space, maybe using the same design as the Stratos 24, but better. Oh well, back to using my well worn 15 year old Talon 22.
Osprey makes solid and reliable stuff. We still have and use a couple of Ospreys from back before they moved their manufacturing overseas. That said, these are simply too heavy. There is no excuse anymore for making a bag this size that is this heavy. My REI Flash 22, same size, weighs 14 oz and has most of the same attachment points and other features. I used the Flash 22 for 2 weeks of trekking in the Alps in September and it was great. Other makers are making comparable lightweight bags. By comparison, the REI Trail 25 which REI is also promoting weighs almost a pound less than this Osprey. I have a wonderful 30L Tom Bihn travel bag made with 1050d Ballistic Nylon that weighs the same as this Osprey.
I’ve been using the Osprey Talon 22 for about eight months now and it’s been an excellent day pack. It’s comfortable, very breathable, and fits my long torso really well. The adjustable harness makes it easy to dial in the fit, and once it’s set the pack stays stable even on steep hikes or when moving fast. It’s lightweight but still carries a full load well without feeling sloppy. The pocket layout is also great with hip belt pockets for quick snacks or a phone, stretch side pockets for water bottles, and plenty of room for layers and gear. Overall, it’s become my go-to pack for day hikes because it’s comfortable, durable, and just works really well on the trail.
I bought this new version to replace my 15 year old Talon 22 which is finally developing holes in the mesh back and bottle pockets. It came in 2 sizes and fit me perfectly. I ordered this new version as a replacement and am very disappointed. It’s “one size fits all” doesn’t fit me at 5’9” and 163 at all. It’s very stiff, the back is uncomfortable and the yoke where the straps begin pokes and rubs my neck. I’m a returning it to REI.
This is my favorite pack that I have ever owned. It’s the perfect size for a daytrip. Helmet attachment is genius. Love the Osprey pole stow and the gear loops are a nice bonus. I work as a hiking guide and have climbed hundreds of peaks in Colorado wearing this pack. I will buy another when my original finally wears out!
When it comes to comfort the EF Talon didn't disappoint. The wider shoulder straps and longer sternum and hip support fit really comfortably and let me carry a lot of weight for an entire day with no back or shoulder fatigue. I didn't need a camelbak so used the space where the bladder would go for my laptop (Dell XPS13). It was protected nicely against the plastic inner frame / back support and the stuff I was carrying, but obviously isn't padded for any serious shock protection. For a 22L pack it could really hold a lot - More than enough for a weekend away based in a hotel. The construction of the bag is sturdy and when it's empty folds nearly flat. Couldn't ask for more.
Excellent larger volume day pack or smaller overnighter for backpacking. Carries great. I have had three other (larger) Osprey backpacks. They were all good, well designed. The fit is personal, but unless you are wanting ultralight, Osprey usually fits my build (6 feet, 190 pounds). I did pick up the version of this pack that is for larger wasted folks by error (saw it on sale and didn't recognize the size difference.) It did not fit my 35" waste AT ALL. Otherwise, Talon 22 is typical good quality and excellent circulation on Osprey ventilation system.
This is the perfect summer day hike pack. In the past, I always hiked with my 34L pack, so downsizing to the Talon 22 makes a big difference. I was able to still carry my 3L water bladder )which by the way, I love the clip that keeps the bladder from coming loose) and all my other day hike essentials. I highly recommend letting the sales rep in hiking department to fit the bag to your body. Huge difference! The color is great. My wife is sad that they don't do this color for women's packs.
Really appreciate the frame! Great for day hikes or a carry on
Small but Mighty – Like an Acorn The Talon 22 may appear compact, but don’t be fooled – like a mighty acorn, it’s built to achieve big things. I recently travelled to the USA for a week with nothing more than the contents of this pack, and it didn’t let me down once. It carries more than you’d expect, keeps everything well-organised, and remains comfortable throughout long days of travel and exploring. The balance of light weight, clever design, and durability make it the perfect companion whether you’re out on the trail or hopping between cities. If you’re looking for a rucksack that punches well above its weight, the Talon 22 proves that great things really do come in small packages.
