Payton II Interchange Jacket - Very Versatile
Purchased for a trip to Alaska's Inside Passage in April. Temps will be in the 35-45 degree range with frequent rain showers so I needed something that would be waterproof, reasonably warm, with room for additional layers. On the other hand, I live in southern CA so don't have much need for a winter jacket on a regular basis. That's what made me select this interchange style - I can wear both the outer waterproof jacket and the insulated jacket when I need both, but can also just use one or the other by themselves, so I'll get a lot more use out of it. It was perfect for an 8-hour whale watch last weekend - temps were in the 50's but when the boat was moving it felt much colder; could just zip and unzip layers as needed. If I'm being really picky, for my personal preferences, I'd make a couple of tweaks to the design. 1) The biggest issue for me is that I don't like the design of the outside pockets on the rainproof outer shell. There are flaps that snap over the zippers, which I assume is to help keep water from penetrating the zipper, but in practice, I found them annoying. Because of how they're designed, you need to lift them up and push them out of the way in order to drop something into your pocket or slide your hands into them. Suspect I'll get used to it over time, but was a bit of a pain as I was taking gloves on and off all day and putting them in and out of the pockets. Other waterproof jackets that I own (as well as others that Columbia sells) aren't designed this way. (see photos) 2) I love having a hood, and being able to remove the faux fir when it's raining (or if you just don't like the look) is great. I also like the plush lining in the hood for extra warmth. Ideally though, I wish the hood could be removed. There will be times when I'm just wearing the outer shell that I'd just as soon not have a hood with fuzzy lining.
Kept me warm and dry!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought the Payton Pass jacket in preparation for a trip to Iceland. I needed something that would keep me warm and dry while spending lots of time outdoors in a much colder climate than I'm used to. This jacket did the trick! When walking in the city or hiking, I often unzipped to cool down. I like that it has side zips and a 2-way zipper, it was very easy to move around in. I was able to undo the waist snaps because I prefer a more relaxed fit. A few nights, I stayed out in below freezing temps without moving around much to see the aurora. The jacket was roomy enough to accommodate additional layers so I stayed warm even in those circumstances. It also kept me dry in rain and sleet.
Pros and cons
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] At first I bought an XL but it was too big. I exchanged for a large. A little snug but I stuck with it (5'7 190lb). The color was khaki which was hard to keep clean and the sleeves with thumb holes was annoying. I liked the inner jacket but its a pain to take in and out. The outside pockets were weird with the outer flaps but I did like the fleece inside. Also liked the breast pockets. The hood was still too big even when snapped smaller. I almost sewed it smaller cause it'd keep blocking my view. It did keep me warm though. Good quality. In my opinion, these run small maybe because of the inner jacket? This time I ordered a non 3 in 1 in a 1X (look at the sizing chart, the 1x is smaller than the XXL! I'd rather have the option of layering if needed. Love the green color
Love but very heavy
This is a wonderful jacket and I wore it December 2024 on a trip to Germany, Luxembourg, and Belgium to see Christmas Markets. Wonderfully warm, great pockets but it is extremely heavy. Wearing six to seven hours throughout the day and evening left me exhausted. In Luxembourg I ended up mailing it home and purchasing a lightweight but extremely warm Uniglo jacket. I don’t usually use rhe hood and there is no good way to keep it out of the way when using a backpack. I finally put it flat inside the jacket. I will eventually add a button and loop to secure once rolled into the collar. Loved the 2-way front zipper, side zippers and ability to fit close and pockets are perfect.
I love this jacket ❤️ because is very warm and it fits me perfect and it has alots of pockets
Perfect....except for fit
I wanted to keep this jacket, but didn't because of the fit. It was too boxy on me (it's me, not so much the jacket) plus the sleeves were incredibly long on me, although I am only 5'2". Would have loved it in a petite size. Otherwise, it is so well designed--plastic zippers seemed sturdy, adjustable hood, excellent fabrics, ample pockets where you want them, love the velcro closure for the zipper flap, loved that there were 3 places to ensure that the inner lining stayed with the outer if wearing them together, very versatile 3-in-1 concept, loved the color--kind of between copper and brown, but a pretty color. Everything about this jacket is great except it wasn't the right fit for me. Probably perfect for someone tall and thin.
Warm, versatile, and stylish.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I just bought this coat as my first new coat in 14 years. I wanted something to keep me warmer in the winter since, over the years, I have a hard time being out in the cold here in the Midwest. This coat is perfect. It keeps the chill out, it is versatile, and it's stylish. I love that I can wear the puffer jacket liner by itself and often do while I'm working at my desk since I get cold. I can roll the outer sleeve up a little and just have my thumbs through the slot in the sleeve. That doesn't get in the way while I'm typing. Highly recommend if you want something warm and sturdy, yet stylish. The zipper does catch sometimes, but that's really common with most zippers. Just hold the bottom of the coat more taught as you zip and it gives little to no issues zipping.
Not Bad
I purchased this coat in black. A big reason I got this specific coat was for the "adjustable" waist. However, the snaps to adjust are not even a whole inch away from each other. There are only two snaps and them being so close gives no cinch to the waist. The length of it is good. The sleeves actually cover my whole arm I am 5'11" so it is nice to find a coat that covers the torso and arms properly.

Great for travel in cold weather
Love this coat! I bought to take on a tour of German and Austrian Christmas Markets in December. This meant being out in the cold for hours at a time and this coat was so warm! It was even ready if it had rained. I loved the deep pockets which made it easy to carry gloves, hat, tissues, maps, etc, without looking bulky.
Best winter jacket!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got the chance to use this jacket after our first big snow storm came in with low temps. I couldn’t stop telling everyone about this jacket! It’s very warm, well designed, and looks stylish compared to other jackets. I’m very happy I ordered my size because I haven’t felt the need to layer up underneath of it.
