These seem great at first, but they are sadly made to break. I’m on my second pair of Quest 4D’s in 2 years (I gave it a second chance because they are very comfy, especially for wide feet) and sadly both fell apart after just 4-5 hiking trips. The first pair collapsed in the back of the heel, and the second pair’s sole is peeling off. It’s the same story with my husband’s Quest 4D’s - his are even worse, even the top lining is peeling off in big chunks! I am an avid hiker and these are the worst boots I’ve had. I wanted to love them but spending $200+ on a pair of shoes that doesn’t last more than a year doesn’t make sense.
I bought this these boots few months ago. I used four time First time I used in Portugal and the sole of the left boot came off at the back. Second I use in Tenerife when hiking up Teide. Rest of sole was broken ( see picture). That happened only one boot. Right boot is perfect. No damage. The boots are very comfortable for me. I am disappointed because my wife use similarly boots 14 years and nothing happened.
Hello, sorry to hear that you are experiencing a product quality issue. All our products are guaranteed for 2 years against manufacturing or material defects. The balance of stability, durability, lightweight, and comfort of this boot is the absolute best. This is my go-to for big rugged days or even when I need a full high waterproof boot on snowy trails. I even use them for hunting since often times bushwhacking in rough terrain comes into play. They provide incredible ankle support with a lacing system that is snug and doesn’t loosen as you hike. The sole is grippy, I get zero hotspots because the fit is dialed, and these things will last years. When I need my most ruggedly capable hiking shoes, the Quest is what I reach for! They’re the shoe ya wanna marry, ya know? Loyal, steadfast, full of adventure for the long haul. Love love love.
I have a lot to say about these as they have been my go to backpacking boots for years! My original pair was my absolute favorite and lasted many tough miles, I’m not sure the newer versions are quite as durable. However, even for the robust nature of these boots, they are lightweight and take minimal time to break in! Great for 10+ mile days and rocky terrain. Highly recommend!
I have had many sprains and strains over the years and my ankles (especially the right one) are unstable. I have been known to fall for no apparent reason because my ankle just decides to roll. I have all kinds of braces and ankle corsets. I bought these boots because I need to walk more. They are amazing! They keep my feet at the right angle and location and I never worry about randomly falling over. I feel like they've actually made my ankles stronger, because 1) I do a lot more walking, and 2) My feet are held in the correct postion when I walk so the more training I do, the more the muscles and ligaments comform to the correct position.
Bought the brown version of this in Dec. 2021, prod. 6/21. Fit is fantastic, I love them for my all-purpose use. I wear them all the time into town, at work (concrete), in the yard, on hikes, etc. Super comfortable, keeps my ankles stable and I never have sore feet or joints from standing or walking too much. They have been in the water some but I still try to stay out of it for the most part. The toe/ball of the sole on the right boot (right under the big toe knuckle joint) is coming apart and squeaks loudly every step I take. They don't feel wet but I tried drying it out with corn starch and seems to have worked for now but will have to stay away from water and see how long the quiet lasts. I thought it might be the tread on surfaces but it squeaks the same on carpet, grass, concrete, wood, etc. Left doesn't squeak at all but also isn't falling apart. My previous pair of Salomon boots had contagrip + gore tex + 4d chassis as well but were not the quest 4 style. I can't read the numbers on them anymore. They also fell apart in same area (both sides) but never squeaked. Weren't quite as comfortable as quest 4. I'll give these a second chance for the comfort. I wish the toe/ball area were more durable.
I had a pair of Salomon's that I bought in 2018 and loved. They recently met their end of days after thousands of happy hiking miles, so I purchased a new pair, the closest as I could find to what I'd had before. In spite of being the correct size, they were incredibly stiff and rubbed against my heels and ankles in ways that were quite painful. Because I'd loved my old ones so much, I kept trying to break these in, until I finally developed inflamed bursa on my heel and ankle bones from all the pressure. I'm in great health and never had foot problems before. Salomon has absolutely ruined these boots in the redesign. So disappointed. Had to stay off my feet for months while they healed.
I don't understand the low reviews... granted, I don't backpack, but I LOVE these boots for the following reasons: runs a bit wide which is perfect for my large feet and cankles; great thread and waterproof, I have been using them on snowy hikes and stay dry and warm; super comfortable and, because they are wide, I can wear thick socks and still the boots don't feel tight; I love the high boot because it helps my weak ankles stay stable. Soooo, all that to say that I highly recommend these boots!
These boots have saved my life. I have just ordered my second pair in two years. I have a narrow heel and huge, painful bunions. I've been through every other brand of boot that exists. These Salomons have a wide toe box, but the lacing system allows me to keep my narrow heel in place. The uppers will be a bit stiff at first, but they break in very quickly. They offer plenty of support on the trail, and they are lightweight. I walked 500 mi on the Camino de Santiago in my first pair and wore them out. I'll be walking again next year in my second pair. Thank you, REI, and thank you, Salomon, for making boots that actually fit my weird feet!
I bought these for my hike to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro and they did not disappoint! My feet stayed warm and dry through rain and snow and were comfortable, sturdy and supportive. I found they didn’t need much break in time, I logged maybe 25 miles in them before my trip and my feet didn’t hurt one bit and were blister free. I ended up donating them to the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project but I liked them so much I might have to buy another pair.
