Overheating during night time lapse - SOLVED
I was excited to try this camera. Sadly, it's going to be returned due to the overheating issue that I've read about. Last night I set it up to do a time lapse (photos) of the Milky Way and in the morning I saw that it stopped recording after only 50 shots were taken due to overheating. I reached out to their tech support and they were less than helpful. Their tech just kept repeating prepared responses and did nothing to address the fact that their camera failed during a very typical use case. Note the outside temps were in the 30's F and I live in the CO Rockies in the US where the air is very dry, so none of their limitations applied (hot, humid, etc.). So bummed. I was hoping this would be my new go-to action cam. :( UPDATE: Something Insta360 should put into their FAQ's is if you power the Ace Pro externally, you should remove the internal battery to help avoid overheating. This is likely true for their other models as well. When powered externally, the camera draws power from the internal battery, which creates heat, and the internal battery is charged by the external source, which creates even more heat. By removing the internal battery, you remove all of this extra heat and the camera will run much longer. In my testing, with the battery removed it, ran over 8hrs shooting 48Mpx images for a time lapse, where previously it wouldn't last 2hrs before shutting down.
