SUPER FUN snowboarding with Milos
Superb for easily staying connected on the slopes. We took pair of Milos to Palisades last weekend, I ski and my buddy snowboards. Being able to just easily talk while on the move is awesome, especially when we get separated - don't have to wait or try to make phone calls, which never works. I also used my Milo with AirPods under my helmet. LOVE them. Way better than old-school walkies.
Great companion for any adventure
I bought 2 Milos for myself and my husband to use on a winter cruise. The Milos performed brilliantly. We used them both on the ship and on land. On the ship (about 700 passengers, 9 decks), we could easily talk to each other between 3 decks, between cabin & lounge areas. Excellent clear voice quality. On land we sometimes got pretty far from each other, maybe a half a mile in open terrain, but we never lost connection, so the range was more than enough for our needs. Milos allowed us to take turns watching for Northern Lights and warming up indoors. The person outside was able to take pictures or keeping their hands warm in their pockets while still having a conversation. We even used Milos while dog sledding. Lending one to friends riding on a different sled was an awesome way to share an adventure. And even though they had never used Milos before, we hardly needed to explain anything about them when handing one over. So easy to use. Looking forward to using them while riding our bikes and cross-country skiing, and even around the house for projects.
Cool product with a few flaws.
After searching high and low for on mountain communications I finally settled on the MILO. I purchased a pair and used them for four days straight with my friend while snowboarding in Chile. Overall they worked well and as advertised. The communication allowed us to coordinate as we went down the mountain and advised each other of traffic or obstacles. The downsides include: the clip! OMG. Why this thing doesn't have a true lock function on it I will never understand. We used the armbands with the lanairds as backup. Thank god we did because they popped off at the slightest tumble sometimes. Probably would have worked better with three to extend the mesh network but the notification that the other member is off line helped when judging how far away someone was. Battery life lasted for a whole day on the mountain 8+ hours-ish but worked best when we stopped them off at lunch.
Don't shout on group bike rides anymore
I didn't buy this from REI, but I would. I was an initial backer. It isn't perfect yet, but I think it'll get there with software updates. For example- it pairs with aftershokz bone conducting phones, but it corrupts the dual pairing mode (if both milo and your phone are paired to shokz at the same time, the phone's signal won't come through clearly). The action clip is a lot of engineering for very little payout. It's not flawless - sometimes, just being active is enough to twist and knock it off the clip (then it goes flyyyyyying away as fast from you as you're traveling). I end up just rubber-banding my milo to wherever I need it to be. What does it do? Fills a gap like nothing else that I know of. My group bike rides have been transformed - I never go out without my milo anymore. Now I can speak at a normal volume and my companion can hear me talking to him. We chit chat all ride long - warning each other of turning vehicles, indicating what direction we want to go, and even just sharing great conversation. It truly does need to be close to your mouth (does not work on your handlebars), but once you find a good placement, it picks up your voice and almost nothing else, then clearly transmits it to your friend with a short lag (about a second if you're right beside each other). I don't bother using these without aftershokz, though, because if you're outside in the wind, it truly does not get loud enough to project through the wind and into your ear holes. Great on road bike adventures, but when I tried mountain biking, dense foliage between us dropped our connection. I also used these across vehicles on a road trip. It worked perfectly! You can get about 3 car lengths away on the highway before you lose connectivity.
Never Be Separated Again
I was an original backer on Kickstarter, so this was not an REI purchase for me. I have used them skiing, biking, waterskiing and hiking. I have been completely satisfied. On a family 70 mile bike ride we could talk to one another while riding and comment on the scenery, terrain, etc when sometimes separated by more than a quarter mile. When skiing it's fantastic to be able to quickly reunite when separated coming through the trees. No buttons to push. You just talk in a normal voice. When waterskiing, you can't talk to the boat while you're on the run, but while getting set to start and once you're down you can easily communicate with the boat. The noise cancellation feature seems to even cancel voice while you are at high speed, so it's while stopped that you communicate with the exception of the biking experience mentioned above. We were riding at about 12-14 mph and could hear one another clearly. Battery life has been consistently 6-7 hours. One con would be that necessary accessories for attaching the unit (eg arm band) are sold separately.
No range, nice design
Many things are very nice about this product but the range is short compared to a traditional radio. I can walk to my driveway and already start having connection issues. We joke that the range is about as far as you can yell.
Does not work as advertised.
Terrible range. What a waste of money. Do not buy. Tried using while skiing, laughable really.
