Since this light is a lower tier light I wasn't expecting much but I was proven wrong. The light output is great, and having the option to turndown the brightness level is plus. The rear, red light has its own on/off switch so both lights don't need to be on at the same time. This is perfect for hiking, trail riding, really any place you want to see in front and be seen from behind.
I was very excited to try this RL10R headlamp on, and it did not disappoint. It feels and looks very durable; IP-54 water resistant, dust resistant. It is light, comfortable, and precisely balanced with headlight (front-facing) and safety signal and battery (rear-facing). You hardly noticed there are 2 parts to this headlamp. Precisely balanced and very comfortable. To get the right fit and maximize head comfort, you can adjust the robust elastic band. The light output (front-facing) can go from 13 lumens, to 750 lumens; just at the touch of a dial. Note my picture with yellow arrow. Using this dial will help very much with battery preservation. The front-facing light can either be in white light or anti-glare red. Note my pictures showing the lumen intensity. The safety signal and battery (rear-facing) can be turned on, with solid red or flashing red. This can be powered on, at the same time as the front-facing light; although not at the same intensity. The elastic band also serves as a reflective strap, enhancing your personal safety when being lighted upon by others at night. It took me a few tries to figure out where the battery was located. Behind the soft rubber backing. You can pop it off with your fingernail. Note my picture with the blue arrow. Perhaps a "battery here" sticker on the soft rubber backing would help to alleviate this tiny issue. I also owned an XPH34R and a TPH25R. The RL10R departs from the XPH/TPH headlamp series, in design, placement of light and battery, and varied light choices. In my opinion, the RL10R offers more-- a bang for your bucks, if you will. I enjoyed all of my COAST headlamps, lantern, and flashlights. But two things that I enjoyed the most from COAST: Lifetime Warranty, and Continued Innovation. RL10R headlamp is a strong example of that. Please keep it coming! *I received this RL10R headlamp two days ago, as part of the field tester program.
The head lamp stays on. Not to heavy or bulky and has a rechargable battery which is a nice feature. Rear battery back is set up for flashing red lights if you are on a worksite at night or on the side of the road. Unable to load video, the light has a brightness knob which is very handy especially when working on equipment with reflective backgrounds
As part of the Field Tester program, Coast recently sent me the RL10R to test and I was amazed as quality for what you get at the $29.99 price point. I foresee a wide range of individuals purchasing this headlamp to utilize around their home or worksite. I would highly recommend this for dog walkers. When compared to Coast's other higher priced offerings, this is a lot of light with features such as rear safety lighting and a rechargeable battery for the money. The headband is made of a grippy breathable mesh fabric that feels comfortable around the head for extended wear. Not once did my forehead feel any irritation from the band. Time will tell as far as how the adjustable dial holds up for overall light control. While it adjusts smoothly, for greater longevity, perhaps the headlamp would be better served with two bottoms to adjust low and high output.
So, I've had this RL10R for over a month now from Coast, and indeed, it still completely amazes me. I absolutely love the "variable light control" feature, which enables the user to literally scroll the actual level of light up or down, allowing the user to achieve whatever light brightness level that is needed, or comfort level that is desired. Also, you can instantly activate the max level brightness, or "Turbo" mode, for a 40 second interval, each time engaged, by a simple button press and hold. The headlamp's red light is very full and bright, as well as useful. I was honestly surprised, and really, really impressed by how powerful and robust it actually was. So very often, I do feel like the red (especially), but most any additional multi-colored lights either are (in my humble opinion), or at the very least seem to be, an after thought unfortunately, in the design and/or manufacturing process. So, it was very refreshing of course, for me to see the level of true quality 100%built-in, to this awesome headlamp by Coast. Also, the obvious tactical implications are seriously endless with the RL10R, it has awesome white and red light variable control, and a very bright red rear safety signal as well, plus it comes with a proven reliable, Zithion X rechargeable battery/powerbank, and yes, even yet, another super cool feature I like, called "power lock-out", which allows the user to completey disable the headlamp from being either accidentally or inadvertently powered on at the inopportune, or "wrong time", and with 750 total lumens, this visually striking and powerful, yet super comfortable and easy to control headlamp, will certainly do whatever it is, that you need it to do. The RL10R comes with everything you need. I highly recommend picking one up from Coast, at your earliest convenience of course, True Dat!!!
Got this for night-biking in town -- it's working nicely & feels solid. Buttons are easy to press even with gloves on. The dimmer-dial is smooth, and the head-light is bright enough for dark roads, even when half-dimmed to save battery. The rear-light sticks out enough to catch on a bulky coat hood or backpack, but reassuring to have the extra visibility around traffic. The strap is a tight fit on my helmet (2022 Smith Session - size small), and stays secure over rough/bumpy stretches. The cable connecting front/rear light is stiff enough to pull the lights a bit off-center, but with a little wear, that's becoming less of an issue. (The cable is coiled & seems able to stretch for larger helmets). So far, battery life seems good -- I've only used it on ten ~20-minute rides, but haven't had to recharge yet. No major downsides apart from weight/bulk. During my first rides, it felt heavy/fatiguing towards end, but feels less noticeable now.
I received the RL10R yesterday and used it for walking my dogs last night. It had a solid charge right out of the box. Initial impressions are that it is very light weight but also mighty in its light output. The on/off switch is easy to use. The light pattern is more of a flood light which is very useful in routine tasks such as walking/working at night. The headband is comfortable and has just enough rubber to keep it in place while not pulling your hair out when putting on and off. It is very lightweight compared to other rechargeable headlamps I’ve used in the past making it easy to forget you are even wearing it. It features a dial on it to adjust the light output which is simple to use and also has a red light on the rear to function as a safety signal which is also beneficial for use while walking or working to be better seen in the dark. Overall this is a solid headlamp for everyday use which can be recharged or take AAA batteries if needed. I received this product as part of a field tester program.
I just got this and took it out camping one time in June. Not even a full month after purchase. The battery died and I hadn’t had a chance to charge it until this weekend. I charged it and the battery is LED is green showing it’s charged. Well the thing won’t turn on with the battery at all. I currently don’t have batteries to put in the unit so I can’t check if it’s the device or the battery. But that shouldn’t even be an issue because it’s brand new! Really disappointed with the product but glad REI has such a great return policy, I will probably swap it out for a Diamond instead because this is just disappointing.
I bought this to wear while I do jigsaw puzzles with my mom (thank you, cousin Dave, for the idea). Her living room tends toward a bit dark, with not the best lighting, and this lamp was a revelation. I can see even the darkest colors clearly. A huge plus. After I get home, I take my dog out for a walk (it's dark here by then), wearing this lamp. It's great - I can easily see what I have to pick up, cracks in the sidewalk, stuff like that. My one complaint: I have to charge it every day. It's a small complaint, but I do wish the battery held up a little longer. I'm thinking about getting an extra battery for extended puzzle sessions.
We haven't used it yet. The flashlight light seems OK. The manufacture feels cheap. The included instruction leaflet is tiny and incomplete i.e. useless. You will not be able to figure out how to charge it without accessing an online tutorial. Also, don't take the battery out of the case (which is possible but actually unnecessary to charge it) without noting the direction it goes back in. To tell how much the battery is charged, it needs to be in the case. I would definitely recommend giving this a practice run while you have cell service.
