This Minimalist-Sandal-Curious Hiker is a Convert
First, I’ll give some background on my experience with sandals and hiking. I am a very experienced hiker in Northern California in the desert, Sierras, coastal, and foothills. I have just had cheap, burly hiking sandals for the past several years, and I always opt for my trail running shoes for hiking. I have been curious about trying lightweight hiking sandals the last few years, especially for warm weather or water activities. For this review, I used Cairn EVOs for working around the house and hiking on a hilly trail with some muddy sections. I’m going to break up this review into categories that I value for sandals. Fit/Comfort: I normally wear a Men’s size 8 or 8.5 with pretty average foot width and volume. The fit for these is great and required almost no adjustment out of the box. I do like the adjustment options, though, if I decide to change it down the road. There is a little bit extra length, so I would think someone who is more consistently an 8.5 could go with the size 8. In terms of comfort, I was very happy my first day of wearing them most of the day including on the hike. I do not regularly wear flip-flops or sandals that go between the big and second toe, but this ended up being OK. The footbed is also a little textured and very grippy. I noticed it more so when hiking on hilly terrain. I think that doing a more challenging and long hike on the first day might have been harder between my toes and bottom of my feet. I would recommend a short break-in period for your feet because of this. Grip/Traction: The Vibram sole had very good traction when hiking on muddy sections of the trail. Both of my kids fell in the mud while I did not. I also wore them while working around the house and found the soles to be even too grippy while working on a ladder while trying to shift my feet. This is not exactly the intended use and speaks more toward grippiness on smooth surfaces. Ease-of-use: There are three adjustments that you can make. There’s the front cinch adjustment, front hook adjustment, and back velcro adjustment. I did not need to move the hook adjustment, and only slightly adjusted the velcro. The cinch adjustment is the one to loosen and tighten when you take them on and off. This is super easy and I like that you can slip these sandals on without hands, which makes them great for stepping out of a tent to go to the bathroom. You do have to pull the cinch strap once on to tighten them for more than just walking around camp. Summary: I really like these sandals and I would call myself a convert. I would not call myself a full fledged convert because I still plan to use my trail running shoes for the majority of my hikes, but I plan to use these more than I would any other sandal for warm weather and mixed water hiking. These will be great camp shoes too. I’m excited to have these going into the spring and summer and am already thinking about bringing them on most if not all of my trips I’m planning.
Lightweight & comfy for chill days out
Found these sandals to be super comfortable for everyday use. Loved the multi-adjustable straps to get a nice, secure fit. They were also nice to have at the beach. I liked that the sand just slid off super easily! I didn’t find them to be as great for primitive trails. I like to have a bit more support generally and the sole just is not thick enough. You can kind of feel the rocks and vegetation under your feet. Nonetheless, I’d still bring this along for most trips because their super lightweight and can really replace my typical daily sandals.
Decently Comfy Sandals with Bomber Traction
TLDR: 4.5 Stars. These sandals would be bomber for a standard river day, including side hikes. Especially in areas that aren't covered in brush that intends to maim. These sandals make decent approach shoes, but will obviously leave your feet exposed to whatever harms the terrain has to offer if you're not careful of your foot placement. This is my first pair of adventure sandals, and I was eager to put them through their paces and find some of their limitations. I took them for a stress test doing some light-moderate bushwhacking in the Sonoran Desert that involved some scrambling and light duty climbing, hiking through pokey brush and scrub, and contouring around rocky/gravelly slopes. First order of business, the sandals are pretty comfy. Rocks from the terrain seldom poked through to my feet on account of the thick foot bed. The upper sole was comfortable, but not overly soft. The thong of the sandal was a slight pain point, but only when putting a big side load onto the sandal when trying to stick to an steep incline sideways or downward. I didn't even notice the other straps when the sandals were strapped on. In steep terrain, my big toe, and the balls of my feet did become hot spots, and gravel and dirt did end up getting under my feet. And I did suffer a couple of pokes from thorns and chollas. Duh. Sandals. The outsole performed impressively well on rock walls, holding traction and supporting scrambling approaches up some pretty chossy rock. Surprisingly, I would likely use these sandals again for that purpose since I like to stay out of closed shoes before climbing. I'm looking forward to trying these out on the river when the warmer weather arrives, and I believe they'll completely replace the battered flip flops I've been using on the water and at camp. Overall, these sandals seem to be well made and well suited for a variety of uses. The traction is superb. The comfort level is decent when they're used within their limits.
Awesome sandals for hiking
Excellent sandals! I do not buy many pairs of shoes or sandals. I read about these bedrock sandals while searching for some hiking shoes and light weight minimalistic hiking sandals. I bought my first pair a couple of months ago (in blue, through REI). I liked it so much that I purchased another set in orange clay color. With my previous one, I hiked on volcanic rocks and gravel in Galapagos for over a week (~20 miles), and they are awesome. I thought they would break and traveled with hiking boots. But problems at all. They did not slip on boulders (I was hiking without hiking polls).
Great sand/beach shoes
I normally wear size 8.5 but I read that these shoes run small so I got size 9 and it fits great. I haven’t worn thong style shoes for a long time so I took a bit to adjust to the feeling but it is good now. These work great for getting to and from sand activities like beach volleyball or surfing. I like that it’s easy to rinse my feet off on the way out while wearing the shoes.
A cross between flip flops and Tevas that lock dow
A cross between flip flops and Tevas that lock down when adjusted properly, have excellent soles/grip, but lack the convenience of other adventure sandals like Tevas. The Bedrock Evo sandals have plenty of features that allow the sandal to be adjusted to your foot: 1) a metal clasp with several daily loops to adjust the strap length near near your arch; 2) velcro straps to adjust along your heel; and 3) a quick release slider along the outside of your foot that can be quicky cinched down when getting rady to go or loosened when doffing. Each adjustment mechanism is backed with fabric to prevent chaffing and discomfort. The Vibram soles feature deep lugs, providing excellent traction. Like Tevas and certain leather flip flops, the soles are slim and provide a minimal cushion and little to no heel drop. If you like minimal shoes like I do, this is definitely a perk. Like my Tevas, I can wear these all day without discomfort. However, while the Bedrock Evo sandals are comfortable, I find these to miss the mark on overall convenience. I think Teva's velcro strap across the top of the foot to be more convenient when putting on/taking off. Overall, a solid sandal with a great sole and lots of adjustability. But, I'd recommend trying a set to see if you prefer how the Bedrock Evo secures to your foot.

price check on chunks of rubber
PRICE CHANGE!!! No thanks. I was excited to check these out per a February best of 2024 article. At 50$ they had my attention now May 1st twice the price. No thanks.
Bunion friendly
I've been loyal to my old Tevas and Chacos for ages, but wanted to give these a shot despite the high price. We're doing another Camino this summer and I was worried about my bunions getting blistered in my other sandals, especially if my feet start to swell. These seem to fit the bill. I can walk miles in them without any trouble and feel like the bottoms are gettingn good traction. They took a day or two to get used to something between my toes but now I'm sold. I bought a size 7 - my normal shoe size is 6/6.5 and a 7 in running shoes.
