Poor iPhone integration -- Fails at hands-free
Barely passable integration with an iPhone. In general, the device can't make calls or read text messages if your iPhone is locked, which it always will be if the iPhone is in your pocket because, HELLO, you are skiing! Complete failure as a hands-free device. You can workaround the call limitation by enabling and invoking Siri to make calls, but not to read messages. So when your ski buddy texts you, you have no choice but to stop and pull the phone out (in the snow storm) to read the message. Why do I have this device again? Oh, i guess its ok for playing music. But most headphones CAN integrate with the iPhone to read messages, so its a significant drawback to the Smith product.
OK Speakers, Bad Communication
These wireless speakers fit easily inside Smith helmets. The buttons on the outside are easy to press with gloves on making turning them on/off, taking an incoming call or playing music pretty easy. Where these fall dreadfully short is the Group communication. I tried to use these at two different resorts and the experience was awful. While stationary less than 20 yards apart, one set would stay connected and the other would go in and out. Both using cell phones on the same network, so it wasn't differences in coverages between carriers. When losing connection you hear a tone from the speaker, so going do the slopes that's all you hear.
No way to adjust EQ in app as advertised.
The speakers seem to work okay but the sound is not great. I tried over and over again to get the app to work but had no luck. One of the features advertised is that there is a powerful EQ in the Aleck app that can fine tune the sound, but I couldn’t find it. I reached out to the customer service and they got back to me saying there is currently no way to adjust EQ in the app, but possibly in the future. The app just seems to send you in circles, but fortunately the speakers work without the app.
Horrible Sound Quality
The sound quality is extremely low on these speakers. Additionally, they have close to zero bass which makes listening to anything like edm very unpleasant. These sound as if they are only worth $15, definitely not 10x that. DO NOT BUY.
Don’t work. Need to replace
These don’t charge. The company says it’s a battery issue but they won’t replace they said I had to contact Smith
Decent
These are decent. They play music. They ring if someone calls. As other reviews have noted, the group listening feature is unreliable. My biggest gripe is the combo of my helmet pads with the speakers… on a long day the combo puts pressure on my ears and is uncomfortable.
Battery quality is poor
They didn’t last two seasons. The battery life kept getting shorter and shorter until one day they didn’t turn on after charging.
Rad
These are better at least to me than most the reviews I read. They aren’t too loud and have great sound all while I can still hear around me. The buttons are super easy to use and they fit super well in my Smith Scout Helmet. I have a medium helmet and the cord from speaker to speaker is pretty long but overlaps easily and tucks in well. I have an iPhone and Siri is super easy to use. I haven’t taken any calls yet cuz I’m to focused on shredding.
Okay Headphone set. Not worth the price.
Not worth the price for these. The sound quality pales in comparison to the OutdoorTech Chips and the inner/outer button system is clunky and annoying for a button you’re pressing under your helmet pad. The rubberized texture makes it more difficult to get the pucks into the helmet as well. Get the ODT Chips for less money and you’ll be stocked you did!
Clunky
The speaker sound pretty good, and seem to work well, but they're kind of clunky and uncomfortable in the pockets of the Smith helmet.
