Impractical for everyday wear, and activities

I've compared numerous rain jacket options at REI to find one that would meet my needs. After testing options from Patagonia, North Face, Rab, Arc'teryx, and REI, I narrowed it down to Kuhl's jacket and another from Outdoor Research. My basic criteria: - Waterproof - Fit is not too baggy, not too tight - Does not make a loud swishy noise when moving - Can wear while running outdoors I have a previous year's version of Kuhl's rain jacket (a gift that I haven't worn due to issues mentioned below), and while this has some improvements, it still has the same problems that prevent me from actually wanting to wear it. Pros: - Colors are great, it looks flattering to wear - Lightweight, no noise issue when moving - Velcro wrist closures make it more flexible than previous models - It does the job as a waterproof layer Cons: - When not fully zipped up, the flap on the right digs into your throat; it's very stiff and resists being pulled down to the side (same issue as previous year models) - When the hood is off, the top edge digs into your neck from behind - When running with the hood off (e.g. when it has stopped raining), the top edge will jab into the back of your neck - No vents under the arms (this is a problem if you're running with it on) In sum, the Kuhl Voyagr jacket looks cool no doubt, it does the basic job of a waterproof layer, and it doesn't swish around like other jackets. But (as opposed to their marketing claims) I would not want to wear this with the hood down (let's be honest, this is 90% of the time), or when doing an activity like running. The ONLY time I would want to wear this is with the hood fully over my head and the front zipped up, walking in the rain. Otherwise I'll reach for another option.

Not waterproof. Not even close. Real review.

Looking for someone who actually uses the gear outside? This is the review you’re looking for. I only tried on this jacket before using it, so the waterproofing/dwr was still at full strength. It feels amazing to wear but 5 minutes of mist from a waterfall was enough to make the inside wet. It was 50 degrees and I was not sweaty. So it was 100% water coming through. Also, not even 60 seconds of spray and the jacket started to wet out. There’s 0% chance this would last during a rainy hike. I question if the other 4-5 star reviewers even used the jacket. Let me make it clear. I did not stand under a waterfall. I was near one getting the mist off of it. Less than 5 minutes of that was enough to penetrate this “waterproof” jacket. There’s no chance it would hold up to heavy rain or extended wet wear. It’s really disappointing since it’s so comfortable and quiet to wear.

Comfortable but probably best for urban use

This jacket is extremely comfortable and looks quite good. It generally breathes quite well (a bit less so on hot rainy days but that might just be me sweating). I also appreciate that is is quiet and flexible doesn’t feel like you’re wearing a stiff shell. That being said, depending on your intended use, a stiff shell may be what you’re looking for. I would absolutely not recommend this jacket as a shell or a heavy duty jacket to get you through long heavy downpours on long days on the trail. I appreciated a bit of trace leakage at the zipper line after a very wet walk to the grocery store even with the jacket relatively new. I would probably have been absolutely drenched had I been out for hours and hours. So the best place for it is probably on my coat hook and not in my pack.

One fatal flaw

I really, really wanted to like this jacket. It's a bit slimmer through the body, which I like, the fabic was excellent and the hood was easily the best fitting and best shape (Brim came outfarther than the neck) of all the jackets I tried out. BUT! The zipper is so stiff that both sides - but especially the right hand side - won't lie flat if the jacket is zippered up to the chest. The ride side just jabs into your neck, right below the jaw no matter how you try to fold it down or re-arrange the hood. And I really tried to make it work as I loved everything else about the jacket. But it's just not possible. And this is an instant deal breaker for me. Sad that it ruins what would otherwise have been a instant purchase.

This is a sharp looking windbreaker. Yes windbreaker because it is definitely not waterproof. The day after I purchased this I wore it outside in a strong rainstorm. I was in the rain for no more than 10 minutes. Upon getting back inside I took off the jacket and was appalled at how wet it was inside the jacket. The outside was of the jacket was wetting out within a few minutes of being in the rain. Waterproof? No. It is nicely made. The seams are all sealed and I like the hood and its fit. But the "waterproof" claim is simply false. Very disappointed in this and considering whether to return it.

Only Water Resistant ... not water proof

Nice looking jacket, and finally got to test it under rain conditions. First hour was a drizzle, and no penetration. Water, for most part, beaded up on outside membrane. For 30 minutes there was a moderate rain (not too crazy), and it was then that the water was visible on the inside when I checked it out at home. Only had used the jacket about 10-15 times, and first time in the rain. Was anticipating better waterproofing. Other reviewers had same comments .... I should have listened. Return the jacket as I didn't want to hang on to it if it didn't perform properly.

Nice looking but didn’t perform in extended rain.

I am a big fan of the Kuhl items I have bought in the past and had great hopes for this rain jacket. My Arcteryx rain jacket works great but the material is noisy. I am very pleased with the cut and feel of the fabric. Much quieter. It does perform OK in a light shower but it wet through in extended rains. I wore it on the Camino Português and experienced several days of continuous rain. On several occasions, my clothes were wet and it definitely was not sweat.

Would not recommend as a rain jacket at all.

The other 1 star is 100% correct. Gave the jacket a try, in a warm NC rain before the big hike in Glacier. First time wearing the jacket; stayed outside in the rain for about an hour. I was absolutely soaked inside and out. This is not much of a rain jacket at all.
