Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The tennis shoes that I had previously had were not comfortable at all. These tennis shoes are the best I have ever had, they are super comfortable and comfortable both for walking and for running, hiking and even for going for a walk in the park, they are not heavy nothing and they feel comfortable, they are wide at the tip which makes them super comfortable, my fingers don't feel limited because they have enough space to move. These tennis shoes have changed my life, I will continue buying them and I recommend using them, my family has already started to change their shoes for ALTRA Running
I've owned many pairs of Altras shoes over the years. I found this model to be a little different from my previous Lone Peaks. The signature square toe box was the same, and especially beneficial for people with wide feet and allows for space for feet swelling after a long hike. if anything, it felt wider! The outsoles provided better traction than previous models, more grippy and ideal for rugged terrain. The shoe laces stayed put so I didn't have problems with loose laces while on the go. Lastly, the shoe felt lighter overall, which I also appreciate to keep the runs and hike longer. A two characteristics I didn't like about this new model was the insole was not as comfortable; like it was lacking cushioning. I felt more of the terrain through the bottom which could lead to foot fatigue on longer hikes/runs. Although this can easily be remedied with a shoe insert. Secondly, I miss the metal gaiter hook. The shoelace hook version just doesn't seem as secure, but I suppose it works the same. Overall, I like the shoe, but I'll probably go get an sole insert to increase comfort.
From the moment I put these on, I have really been enjoying them. Very lightweight with plenty of room for your foot to be itself. The first time I tried them on, I had been wearing casual sneakers all day and when I put these on it felt like I wasn’t even wearing shoes. I love the roomy toe box. Despite the barefoot feeling you get when wearing them, they have generous cushion and good tred which is great for rocky trails. I’ve walked and run on gravel and natural trails (though I haven’t done too much elevation), and I felt comfortable and secure the whole time. Not much arch support, but that is to be expected with the minimalist style of the shoe.
What can I say about the Altra Women’s Lone Peak 8 Trail-Runners?!? I love them. I recommend them to anyone who will listen. I have two other pairs of the Lone Peak 7s and Lone Peak 6s, and this latest Lone Peak 8 version is the best. I cannot praise these shoes enough. As always, Altra hits it out of the park with the spacious and large toe box so that my tootsies can spread and breathe as I run on the trails and chase after my dogs. The upgrades to the tread on the bottom of the 8s keep me secure and stable on wet grass, mud, and loose sand. This is a significant upgrade from the previous versions, thanks to the addition of the extra Maxtread claws to the heel and big toe. I also adore the dark blue color with the lighter blue highlights to give it a slick and sporty look. As an avid hiker and dog sports enthusiast, I’ve put these Lone Peak 8s to the test. I first took them to an agility class with my dog, where they kept me upright, dry, and comfortable as we ran complicated courses requiring me to make tight cuts and hard stops – all of which were on wet, soft grass. I then took them on a spring season hike and faced loose sand, mud, and puddles. I’ve also worn them to workout at the gym for cardio and weights, and they provided the perfect amount of traction and support. While I haven’t had the chance to test these on a backpacking trip, I will most certainly be using these to help haul myself and gear on the trails. When I pack in Yosemite, I replace the insoles of my trail runners with more rigid hiking insoles due to the rocky terrain, then swap them back to the originals once done. That helps keep the shoes solid when managing different terrains with the extra weight strapped to your back. Overall, I love these shoes to the moon and back and will be an Altra Lone Peak lifer. My last pairs held up great and never got any holes; they only started to wear on the tread. I will continue to buy these and preach to anyone who will listen that they need to get a pair, too.
Having run a trail race without proper trail shoes made me realize there is a big difference between trail and road shoes. I have a wide foot so I sized up half a size like I usually do. I was not expecting so much room in the toe box and that is not a negative thing. I did wear a thicker pair of socks for my first trail workout in these and my foot felt comfortably spacious with room for swelling. If you have a narrow foot you might want to buy your true size. They felt comfortable right out of the box and had excellent grip as I came down some of the steeper hills. If you’re new to trail shoes, I recommend going with these!
Overall, a very solid trail shoe! Comfortable, with a nice wide toe box (helpful for those of us who need a little more room). Love the zero drop as well. Tried this on a few different runs - good traction in mud (worked as well as my hiking boots) and kept my feet fairly dry if splashing through shallow patches of water. Not fully waterproof though, and my feet did get wet in deeper puddles. Still, the ventilation was great and prevented the dreaded wet-sock-sloshing I get with my standard road running shoes. If you're looking for an entry level trail shoe, would recommend!
I've been searching for a new trail runner and I have found it! Love these shoes right out of the box. I first did a 5 mile trail run in a redwood forest right after a pretty significant rain. These shoes were excellent - especially the stability and grip on the slick downhills and ability to really grip well on the uphill climbs. I love the room in the toe box (I had on thicker wool socks due to the cold and still plenty of room for my toes and wide foot!) and the overall lightweight construction. The other thing these shoes have that may only be something I'm picky about is plenty of room for my ankle bone (lateral malleolus) and the back heel doesn't go too high or stiff on my Achilles'. Aside from the daily runs, I've taken them on a couple long hikes that had a lot of rocks and sand - I was pleasantly surprised how supported my foot fell and I didn't feel the rocks through the sole of the shoe. I'm really happy about this feature because I prefer to hike in trail running/lightweight shoes as opposed to heavy hiking boots. Finally, kudos to Altra on the color - I'm a huge fan and just so happy to have this color option.
I love these shoes! I have taken these up in the hills and canyons around my neighborhood and they handled great but they also make for great around-town shoes. My favorite part about these shoes is the wide toe box, so comfortable!
I bought these shoes before I went to Scotland for two and a half weeks. I tried them on in the store and walked and ran in them before deciding to purchase them. I planned on hiking a lot in Scotland, but our entire party came down with Covid. I wore them every day, and they were the only pair of shoes I needed to take. I walked in them all day every day, except travel days. Europe has endless steps, and my feet never got tired. I was able to hike in them when I felt better. I never ran in them, but I'm sure they would have felt fine if I ran in them. I plan on using them, instead of my hiking boots, for most of the hikes I take at home.
As someone who requires a wide toe box in order to prevent chafing and blisters on my toes, I so appreciate the shape of this shoe. I normally wear a 9.5 Wide Hoka in order to have enough room for my toes to spread out, but I easily had the same amount of width if not more in the toe box of these Altras. I was particularly impressed with how grippy they are considering they’re pretty lightweight. If you are someone who wants to feel more cushion on your sole for running, then these may not be for you as they are fairly thin-soled; but if you’re someone who likes to be able to feel some of the topography of the trail on your feet, these are great. The tread is quite aggressive and I found it to give me stability on surfaces. The laces could be a little longer to allow for a double knot, but that’s about the only area I noted for improvement. Great zero drop trail shoe.
