Pretty good, but a little thin
My kid likes these pants for hiking. They are pretty light weight and he says they don't bind when he moves around. We haven't gotten to test the DWR coating but it says they are there. The pants are on the thinner side and he has already made a small tear on the knee after a few uses. He likes the cargo pocket and draw string waist. Overall these are pretty solid kid hiking pant for warmer days
Good pants, weird stitching behind the knee.
My son loved these pants. He liked the zippered pocket on the side, that they are very stretchy, and he said they are very comfortable. We took them on a small hike and then just rode bikes around; he seemed to be comfortable in them. He was comfortable up to 50 degrees, when the temperature dropped to the 40s he said he was feeling a little cold. From my perspective, these pants seem well made like other adult REI pants. It has a weird some weird stitching behind the knee, almost as if wanting to emulate convertible pants. The stitching did not seem to bother my son, but it is definitely a weird feature since the stitching doesn't seem to do anything.
Cool weather pants are a hit
My 9 year old son enjoyed these pants made for summer walks and cool weather. So happened we got a cold spell, first major snow in two years in this area, soon after receiving these. He liked the side pocket where he could fit his cards and small toy in. I also liked this because of the responsibility it shows him for carrying things at his age. Material was light enough to run and play tag in and comfy enough for vegging out playing video games. The one thing he didn’t like was how many times he had to fold up the cuffs but he won’t have to soon enough as he continues to grow.
Nice pant for an active kid
Got these for our 8 year-old son. For an active kid who loves to play outside (hike, bike, climb rocks, etc) these are great. They've held up nicely after several weeks of use. Most pants for this kid wear out in the knees, sometimes within a single use. Happy to say the knees are holding up just fine. He likes wearing them and has never complained about discomfort with these. We went with a size up (L, even though the sizing chart suggested M) because kids grow so fast at this age. With the drawstring waste, the slightly large (on purpose) fit hasn't been an issue. Hoping to get a couple years out of these before he grows out of them. Would purchase again.
Great all-around pants for outdoor adventures.
My son really likes these pants. He is sensitive to the material on the inside of some pants but these do not bother him at all. They are comfortable and easy to move in and he also really likes all the fun pockets to put the treasures. I like that they are elastic with drawstrings so that they will continue to fit him for a while. They may be a little on the long side depending on your kiddo, but they also fold up fine on the bottom too if you need to shorten them an inch. Shockingly we haven’t had a chance to test them in rain yet, but I look forward to trying them out on a wet day.
Solid, durable but soft technical pants for kids!
Solid pants for my son. Material is light but durable. Allows for flexible movements while playing and running, but nice to know that it will still provide protection from abrasions from falls or otherwise. Drawstring waist helps to keep them up, as he is tall but skinny, so this will help to keep the pants fitting for longer than otherwise if no drawstring. The zippered pocket on the leg is deep enough for "treasures" from the trail/woods, but doesn't impede ability to run/play. Solid pants that we will surely put to good use for various outside activities.
Pockets for days!
My oldest son was so excited to get a new pair of hiking pants in the mail. He immediately put them on and wore them around the house for the rest of the afternoon. However we did notice right away that the length of this pants is VERY long compared to the waist size. My son is 90th percentile in height so rarely if ever has he had the problem of tripping/slipping from the bottom of his pants. The pants may have been just slightly too large for him in general but the drawstring at the waist made sure to keep them up. I don’t think a size smaller would’ve solved the length problem because the waist/hips would’ve been too tight. All that being said he wore them on a couple hikes throughout the PNW, to school a few times, and with shoes on and the length wasn’t as much of an issue. These are definitely more spring/summer hiking pants, they are pretty airy and do not provide any insulation. We hiked once during a cold snap and he wore long johns under them. The second hike the temp was in the high 40’s and he seemed comfortable. I asked what his favorite part of the pants were and he said he loved the “really REALLY deep pockets”. Overall I think these are a great set of adventure pants but I would have your kiddo try them on before purchasing them just to make sure they fit.
Exemplar Everyday Pants
The design of the pants are good except that REI redesigned them to be a little thin and they removed the enhanced knee protection with the extra patch which was extremely useful for kids. They still tend to be durable and water resistant and would be a great buy for anyone looking for lightweight hiking pants. The sizes run a little big considering that the XL had to be folded once to fit nicely on a 5 foot 3 male.
Disappointed in quality
We loved these pants for our children, but we bought the new model and after ONE wear hiking, the pants are completely snagged and pilled in the legs. Our other daughter did the same hike wearing last year's model and there were no such issues.
Perfect fit
Unintended weight loss forced me to boy sizes. These have a simple design, elastic waist and straight legs with quality fabric. Plan to purchase additional colors. Would like a cream and khaki colors added too.
