Not high quality, but great for the price

These aren’t high quality knives but they’re not junk either. They would have been a fair deal at twice the price. Good purchase

Cheap little knives. Probably worth the $20 but not what you would expect to be sold a rei.

Good budget knives

Appear to be well built and pretty solid for smaller knives. They were decently sharp out of the package. Photos will show how well they cut through card stock. I find the handle of the LX283 a little awkward and for hands on the smaller size. The LX282 feels right in my hands which usually wear men’s large glove sizes. Both knives are under three ounces and won’t add much weight to a kit. Time will tell how well they hold up but I am anticipating they will based on the way they feel. Opening the LX283 one handed is easy whether you use your thumb or the rear knob and flick it.

Good utility knives to have on hand

It's nice to get a pair of knives, 2 is better than one so you can always have one handy. These knives come as a pair and both are quite sharp but not razor sharp. The quality is good and the plastic handles seem substantial enough to hold up to drops or general mis-use. The only slight ding, is the blade doesn't snap open, you need two hands to open it to a locking position, no biggie. I suspect the black coating on the blade will get more and more scratches over time but hey, these are utility knives not one of a kind masterpieces. I put the green smooth blade in my tackle box and used it to cut bait, fishing line and cut open some clams. Works great. The black one now lives in my truck between the seats for camping trips, impromptu picnics and in case I ever need to cut my seatbelt or someone else's in a car accident emergency. Would make a great gift for the outdoorsy person.

Useful for Camping but Heavy for Backpacking

I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. I used these primarily for food preparation and they did well. I never found a need for the serrated edge on the LX283, however, it weighs less than the LX282 so I found it more comfortable to carry in my pocket. (The LX282 has a slightly larger handle.) I weighed them and found the LX282 (non serrated) s 2.8 oz and the LX283 (partially serrated) is 2.1 oz. I tried using the clip to attach to my waist but it came unattached as soon as I sat down, however, I've never found clips on any knife trustworthy for carrying. I like the locking device but for me it is a two handed operation to close the blade. I don't trust myself to close it one handed, as I feel at risk for an accidental cut. (see photo). The blades are wider than an actual kitchen paring knife, which takes some getting used to for camping food preparation. Overall, I prefer the smaller size of the LX283 but someone with a larger hand may feel differently.

Great knives for the price

I was pleasantly surprised with these knives. Based on the price, I was not expecting much, but I found that the knives are well made and do not feel cheap at all. The package comes with two knives: one with smooth-edge blade and one with part smooth and part serrated. Handles/grip: Both knives have handles with ridges and feel secure and non-slippery in hand. The handle of the smooth-edge knife fits a little better in the hand than the other one. But the part-serrated knife is black and looks cooler. Unlike some other folding knives, I like that these have a protrusion at the base of the blade that protects the index finger from slipping onto the blade when pushing. The same protrusion helps with opening the blade one-handed. The handles are very sturdy and do not flex or twist. Folding mechanism: The blade rotates smoothly and locks with a nice click. The lock is secure and the blade is very stable. When folded, the lock spring holds the blade closed, so there is no risk of the blade sliding open on its own. One-handed operation: The part-serrated knife has pegs on the blade that make one-handed opening easy. The smooth-edge knife has a hole, which is harder to use. It also requires more force to open than the other knife. It took me some practice to be able to open it one handed. It helps to push down on the blade protrusion that sticks out of the back of the handle at first, in order to get the blade moving, and then use the hole. Unlocking and closing with one hand is easy for both knives. Sharpness: I would say that the sharpness of the knives is good but not great. The packaging does claim they can be sharpened easily though. Overall, I like these pocket knives more than I expected.

One handed opening is okay

I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. This is a nice value pack, I have been carrying around the serrated knife for a week and a half now. It has a side nub to open it and a little back tail that it’s possible to also use to open, but it has a little bit of friction to it so I’m always a little scared I will slice my thumb when I open one handed. But so far it’s been okay. The straight knife has a hole instead of a nub so I don’t open that one handed at all. In fact I’m not that fond of it for that reason. I have average sized women’s hands. All in all, these are decent value knives but I still prefer my Krenshaw since it’s easier to open one handed. If that’s not an important to you, then these knives otherwise seem pretty good.

Good Composite Alternatives for the Price

I have a lot of pocket knives for work but have never found a composite one I liked for hiking and backpacking (picture of all of them for scale and shape comparatively). These knives are both sturdy while still remaining lighter than traditional pocket knives. I typically don't like a serrated knife but I think the partial serration on the LX283 (black knife) will make it the knife I take backpacking. I also like that it has a thumb stud which makes it easy to open. I found the LX282 (green knife) thumb hole was too small to use to open easily one handed which makes it less useful for me. Will likely throw it in the car camping food kit for food prep as I don't like taking big bulky chef's knives. Both have nice closures that aren't too difficult to use, even with work gloves on. Nothing super fancy but great for the price point.

Perfect pocket knife set

Great pocket knives! These knives are perfect, not too big, not too small. They are super light (perfect for backpacking) and the locking mechanism is easy to disengage, which has been something I’ve had an issue with, as I’m usually concerned I’ll accidentally cut myself while trying to close my knife. The pocket clip is easy to use and secure. Great two knife set!

Best every day and hiking knives

I have been using these knives as my every day carry for work and my backpacking knife ever since they were sold at Home Depot as a Christmas special forever ago. I have over 5000 miles of daily use on my backpacking one. They are inexpensive but I have never had one fail. They feel great in the hand, hold an edge and are easy to sharpen when you need to. I was actually just searching to find more used ones with the product code and saw they are now at REI. Awesome! Just bought 6 packs so I can hand them out to friends and nephews. (And a few extra for me because I set them down at job sites and lose them from time to time)

Superb, at least for the price

2.8 ounces, blade is just a hair under 3" (so, legal almost anywhere), closed it's under 4", good blade geometry, very solid for the price point. This is relatively soft steel, as the price point suggests, but that means it isn't brittle and it's easy to sharpen. Takes a razor edge; sure, it doesn't keep it, but you aren't paying $100 or even $50. My teenager uses the green one for his EDC and has absolutely abused it for more than a year but it's still solid and has no rust at all. Just needs occasional sharpening. I'm very impressed that this knife can be this light and this durable. Very light is a great, great thing.

Basic camping/backpack knife

These knives are great all-around "travel" knives. They are relatively small and compact, but do the job. They have a nice clip in case you want to put it on your hip, or perhaps backpack for easy access. Easy to open and close. Fits nicely in the hand and easy to maneuver. The one drawback is the packaging. The knives are packaged in heat sealed plastic with the knives in the open position. One has to be very careful when opening.
