This is my 4th Garmin Edge, I started with the 800 then 810 830 now 840. The feature I appreciate the most is the ability to upgrade and transfer settings from my previous Edge to to my new edge computer. The reason I upgrade is because I wanted the daily suggested workout feature. So far it is exactly what I wanted.

I am a first time owner of the any Garmin product and I love this little thing. Very user friendly, love the touch screen, solar powered, so much info and now I never leave my house without it.

Awkward menu layout and altimeter doesn’t work

Overall, this is a good unit. I like the amount of features that it has in the battery life. But I don’t like, is the clumsy/awkward menu layout that takes time to find things. I’ve had this edge 840 for about a month now, and still have trouble navigating certain areas. Today try to do a benefit charity ride in the rain and the altimeter stopped working a few miles in. Not the end of the world as the navigation still worked. But this seems like an issue that should have been fixed in the last version and it’s kind of frustrating when you are trying track stats and plan efforts on climbs. Wish I had known about the altimeter issue before I purchased.

First bike computer

Easy initial sync with Garmin Connect and my existing Garmin gear (HRM, Cadence). This let me get a basic set up and get riding without much friction. First ride with a bike computer and with no custom configuration, and I had all the data that I needed (and more) available right in front of me. As a first time bike computer user, I am just scratching the surface of what this product can do and I'm already happy with my purchase. The only improvement I'd like to see is more configuration capabilities within Garmin Connect, ex. Customize profiles and screens in Garmin Connect. If this capability exists, it wasn't prominent enough in the initial onboarding.

Needs some bug fixes

Overall, I really enjoy having this Garmin. When it works correctly it is great. I love seeing how much I have left in a climb and courses work well. The problems I have seem to be common, often it will freeze when syncing and more annoyingly my workout won't show up on the Edge. Today I had to go into the calendar and select a day that happened to have the same workout because no matter how I tried, I couldn't get it to show up for today even though it showed on my app and desktop. Another great thing is it will reroute a course on the fly, helpful when a road is closed or impassable. Though I did have it say the device was full on my last long ride and couldn't reroute after that.

Great looking data, so little time!

Upgraded from the Edge 130. Huge jump from 130, I'm talking going from riding a scooter, to jumping on ZX-6R (if not familiar with motorcycles it's really really powerful) Practically a smart phone on your bike. Actually, it almost completely eliminates the need for to have a phone on you, other than a phones primary function as a communication device. UI is a bit finicky with the touch screen, however it's intuitive and bright enough to be viewed across any conditions without ruining the battery life. Which is good, but could be better. I'd opt for the solar option if making the decision again.

Edge 840

I used to have the red Edge 500, and later on the 530, upgrading to the 840 is a nice step up. I can see how the touchscreen is helpful with the new interface, better integration with the app. Unfortunately, the screen size still is pretty much the same, with a huge bezel around it, which could have better use (solar). Also, a lot of the new features require other devices like power meters, which is not very clear in the descriptions. Also, Garmin needs to make it easier to switch between bikes, the Edge should be able to recognize based on type of ride or at least based on sensors (cadence/speed) - we shouldn't have to manually change this info every single time after every activity.

Climbpro was disappointing

I bought this 2 months ago as an upgrade to my Garmin Edge 510. I really like the combination of buttons and touch screens. I was excited to get to my first climb to try out the Climbpro but was quickly disappointed as I can not read the numbers on the screen: Avg gradient, length of the climb and total feet of climbing. Those 3 critical data points are the smallest on the screen. My suggestion would be to get rid of the map and use that extra real estate to enlarge the numbers and provide choices as to what goes where. I am really hoping Garmin gives this flexibility with an upgrade soon.

The best Garmin Edge

I bought this 840 to replace my 530. I loved my 530, but my battery would die on my 100 mile Century rides. This started after I had paired it with the Garmin Rally XC200 pedals. I knew the 840 had a better battery and I was tempted to get the solar model. I’m happy to report that it was fine after my Century ride and had 35% battery in reserve.

High performance transparent gear

I jumped into Garmin gear with a 530. Have had every version in between. The 840 does exactly what you expect. For me, gear needs to just be transparent and do its job and not worry about it. All the others have seemed to have little quirks that would bug. I had three different 830 and the elevation never worked right. If sweat or over foggy got on the 830 screen it was just a hassle to navigate. The 840 seems to have refined several things. I still hang on to the 530 because it is still a sid great unit that worked without any snags. Garmin makes great gear and there really put out a great unit with the 840. The real time climb is nice and can be adjusted for small, medium, large type climbs.
