Great pack for all you need to haul
Although the Targhee is marketed as primarily a winter pack I found it to be a great and versatile item that worked just as well when there was no snow. I thought at first the pack would be uncomfortable over winter jackets/layers but that was not the case. The soft padding on the pack didn’t cause my jacket to bunch up, and kept items in the pack from digging into my back. The zippered inserts inside the pack are roomy, with lots of pockets and dividers to carry all your stuff. The pack has a spot for a hydration pack, with an insulated sleeve inside one of the back straps for the hydration tube/mouthpiece. The pack fit really well, even when used over several different jackets/ base layers, The pack has several sets of clips and buckles so the fit can be dialed in no matter what you are wearing under the pack. I found the zippered pocket that sits over your hip to be too small for a cellphone, but was just about the right size for an energy bar… Some of the features of this pack that I really liked were: I love the fold out helmet harness. The straps were a little difficult to undo with gloves on, but it was great having a place to safely keep my helmet when not using it. I really liked that all the zippers have pulls that are wider to accommodate gloved fingers. It was great to not have to take my gloves off each time i needed to get something out of the pack. It’s simple, but i also liked that there was a pocket that came with a clip to hold keys. I always worry my keys will go tumbling out when i am not looking, and knowing they are clipped to the inside of the pack means i can worry about something else. One other thing i really like was the upper chest clip. The two clips on the backpack straps can slide up or down on their straps so you can adjust where on your chest they sit. As i wear this pack with different gear depending on the weather, i found this to be very helpful and made the pack far more comfortable. With the adjustable straps, you can slide them to whatever position is best for the gear you are wearing. I had to slide them way up when wearing heavier, bulkier gear, and found that helped the fit of the pack tremendously. Straps on the side and back of the pack are designed to carry ski/boards. I found it easy to strap skis onto the pack, but more importantly, it was easy to remove them as well. The straps worked just as well for carrying trekking poles too. Before the snow, i used this pack for cold weather/fall hiking and found it to work amazing for that as well. I thought the padding on the back might be too much and too hot for fall hiking but it really wasn’t. If you need a good quality pack to hold all your gear and can be adjusted to work with all kinds of different layers of clothing then this pack is for you.
Great ski pack
Pretty happy with this ski pack. There’s a pocket for all the things you could need while backcountry skiing or spending a day riding the lifts. The main pocket is a a rear entry zip. This is the first time I’ve had a ski pack with a main pocket accessed through the back. I was surprised to find it actually made things more organized and less bulky. I could open that pocket up and easily see my gear instead of having to dig through everything to find a needle in a haystack. There’s a top pocket that’s great for googles, handwarmers, and quick snacks. Within the top pocket there’s an inside zippered pocket with a plastic clip for your keys, ensuring you’ll never return to the car after laps wondering where the heck you buried your keys or if you lost them forever in the snow. Below the top pocket is an easy access pocket for your shovel and probe and other snow safety gear. My one complaint with this pocket is that the top front strap made to hold your skis if your booting up goes over one side of this zippered pocket which may make access a little tricky in a dire situation but there’s still quite a bit of space to get gear out with just the other side unzipped. The fabric on the front of the pack is cordura so will be hardier against metal edges while carrying. There’s also another front pocket which has a hidden helmet holder that tucks out. When not using the helmet holder this pocket is also a great place for snacks. The waistband is only pocketed on the wearer’s right side hip and the left side is a gear loop. On the side of the bag is straps if you want to carry your ski or split board A-frame style. Really love the versatility for how to carry gear on this pack. I’ve taken the pack out for a couple skis and have been very satisfied.
Good pack, great for short height
This is great winter daypack. The Targhee 30 Snow Pack impressed me for one reason; the XS is a perfect fit for petite people. I'm 5'3" 115lb, and was struggling trying to find a technical pack outside of children's ranges. This pack actually sat correctly at my hips, and the shoulders were proportioned correctly. I would highly recommend this for short ladies or tweens. Our local resort isn't open for the season, but first snow hit so I took this out for a long hike to dial in the fit. This pack features two front compartments, a third stowed helmet keeper pocket (I put my Kahtoola spikes in there), and a large back zippered pocket which is accessed from behind. There is also a hydration sleeve with an enclosed tube cover which runs down the shoulder straps. The bag features a number of toggle configurations to hold skis and poles. I primarily snowshoe, but the side straps held my trekking poles and small tripod with no issue. On this trip I was able to pack my big Hestra gloves, snacks, an extra fleece, my water reservoir, and quite a bit of camera gear. (I was messing around at home and was even able to get a change of clothes and a Nemo osmo 2p tent in here. I don't know why you would, but it's an option if you're splitting an approach hike with a friend). I set my pack down in some fresh powder to test the weatherproofing - the snow dusted off, no problem. I have a few improvements which Gregory might consider. I would prefer a designated satellite SOS pocket on the shoulder strap. I like to keep my inReach close, but without a pocket it's either up on your shoulder or in your armpit. There is also a hipbelt pocket that is just a bit too tight to hold a larger phone. They might consider more tech pockets in the next version. Overall this is a decent winter pack. Highly recommend the XS for anyone under 5'4".
Great pack for snow adventures
This backcountry ski pack is great! I have been using the same ski pack for a decade and was skeptical about changing to a new one but have nothing but good things to say. There's a great pocket for avy gear that fits everything snugly so it doesn't jostle around while skinning. The back entry for the main compartment is key when changing over in snowy conditions as you can rest the pack face down on your skis to pull out all those warm layers. There's a nice goggle pocket and the insulated zipper pocket in the strap for a water bladder tube is great. I feel like I keep finding little hooks and attachments that make attaching gear and stowing things very easy. The size is great for a full day tour without being too bulky and the back/straps are very comfortable. The pack is also relatively light weight which I appreciate immensely. My only complaint is the hooks for the helmet carry system are hard to fully unhook and stow with cold fingers, but I think the loops will loosen with time for more ease of use. I like that the helmet is on the front of the pack, rather than the top like a lot of packs. Much more comfortable. All-in-all I am very pleased with this pack.
Functional and Comfortable Touring Backpack
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a great pack for touring! I love the layout of the pockets that make it easy to organize all of my gear and are very spacious. The back support is amazing and feels like I'm barely wearing a backpack while I'm touring because it's so supportive! The hip belt is great as well and nice to have the support and get the weight off of my shoulders- although I wish that both sides of the hip belt had pockets so I could stash snacks, tech, and other things I need quick access to. The pocket is also too small to fit my phone in which is a bummer. Overall, the versatility and comprehensive features of this backpack make it great and just what I wanted for touring. #giftedproduct
This is great winter daypack
The Targhee 30 Snow Pack is a tough bag! I havent had snow to try it in yet but I loaded it up heavy and went for a meander. I threw everything in the bag Id usually have on for skiing. Shovel, helmet, bladder, extra glove, hat, buff, snacks etc. I dont see myself ever using the bag to strap my skis to but I put my poles in there to get a feel on the distribution. Works well to keep out of the way and off the ground. There is a rigid frame to the bag and the helmet holder packs away. The front pocket is great for small things, the large zipper from the front has great capacity, the back zips open for bladder access. Sitting down with the bag was no different than any other backpack with waist belt - it does the pull your coat up in the back thing. Im 5'10 an 220 lbs - im an xl-2x so I was worried about adjusting this bag to my body. I was able to make it comfortable all around with my normal ski gear on underneath. The bag was a little shorter than how Id like it fit for me but I recognize that I land outside the size range for the bag. This is great winter daypack. Ill grab it for x country and downhill days. Maybe snowshoeing as well!
