Thorium Down Review
This winter is the first time I've used my Thorium down jacket in the wild. Whether it has been belaying climbers on the Dorset coast or winter walks through Hampstead Heath. This down jacket has handled keeping the cold at bay in its stride. I'm actually looking forward to taking into the Scottish Highlands later in the season. I am 6ft3" tall with a 6ft3" wingspan and the Thorium covers my torso and arms completely. This jacket may be too warm for a mild winter hike, yet perfectly engineered for when the weather's in those low single digits. Clinty Climbing
The most versatile jacket.
Thorium is the most versatile hoody jacket, over to be vey light and packable, it keeps you very warm with his insulation material. I use Thorium just with one long sleeve layer under it in autumn and italian winter. Then Thorium is perfect for the winter season in the north Europe just with a base layer plus an hoodie under it until many degrees below zero. At last, Thorium is my insulated layer in my ski trip all winter, under my Gore-tex layer 💪🏽💪🏽
Black magic color matching
Buying this down jacket is light, strong in wrapping, static and warm, and with the middle layer of -10 degrees, it completely wins the Asian figure, and the sleeves are not too long, which should be the reason for positioning it as a warm layer. Wear friendly, outer jacket to increase wind and rain resistance. The hat is very friendly, not too big and basically covers the head. Only the nose and mouth have some minor disadvantages, which are not particularly wear-resistant, but they are better than cerium. Dynamic sweating and warmth retention will be discounted. It is recommended to change to cotton-padded jacket.
Worth it even at the price
I am not a “reviewer”, but wanted to review this piece. I am 6’1” 165 and a Medium fits perfectly. Some have complained about shorter sleeves but it’s not noticeable. Would have liked a more tapered mesh sleeve opening, but just wear gloves with a tight seal. Coat is comfortable, light, breathable, and WARM. Perfect for walking the Huskie in the snow. Hood is so warm you don’t even need a hat. Mouth and neck are comfortably covered. I spent 12 weeks backpacking through Utah in the middle of the winter. This would have been amazing in the evenings out there. Looks good. Lots of compliments. Worth it even at full price.
Too snug around middle
Just one thing bothers me on this jacket - I wish the waist was 1.5 inch wider and roomier overall - its too snug for athletic build 5'9". Right now it is 21" wide lying flat - it would be perfect if it was 21.5 - 22" wide flat. its difficult to have decent movement, especially when sitting down - just feels constraining like a girdle ! And I am not fat at all, just a bit stocky and 50. Going up a size doesn't work, where everything else becomes too big. Since this is not the cerium, primarily to fit as a middle layer under a shell, there is not reason to keep the midrift tailoring so snug - so relax it out an 1" overall next season please!
Cheep see through material
Just purchased this for my husband and although the colour is awesome you can see all feathers/filling thru the lampyre colour which makes the jacket look cheep
Hi Stacey, your feedback is important to us, and we'll be sure to convey it to our design team. The reason why you see the dark-coloured goose down is that we do not dye our insulation and we use the down insulation in its natural form to maintain the warmth-to-weight ratio. There are times when our lighter-colored jackets will show some down through the outer fabric, rest assured this is not a defect.
Lightweight Warmth Marred by Durability Issues
Initial Impressions: I purchased the Arc'teryx Men's Thorium Down Hoodie in Bordeaux color, size large, in February 2024. Upon receiving the package, I was immediately struck by how lightweight it felt - the box seemed almost empty! This first impression was definitely a positive one. Fit and Sizing: As a 6'2" man with a relatively thin build (I wear a 17 34/35 in men's dress shirts), the large size fit me perfectly. The hood is particularly well-designed, offering excellent coverage for the face. Warmth and Performance: REI markets this hoodie for "casual hiking" and rates it as their "warmest" option. In my experience using it for urban commutes in Boston winter, I'd say it's more accurately described as "warmer" rather than "warmest". In temperatures in the 20s or 30s Fahrenheit, wearing just the hoodie over a t-shirt wasn't quite enough. I found that layering with a tucked-in long undershirt significantly improved its performance. Aesthetics: The Bordeaux color is very appealing, and I was quite pleased with the overall look of the jacket. Durability Concerns: Unfortunately, the durability of this hoodie was a significant letdown. Despite careful use - no hiking, rough handling, or washing - I noticed several issues within just a couple of months: (1) A sizable tear appeared on the right arm, eventually growing large enough for the stuffing to start coming out. (2) The front of the jacket showed signs of weakening material, with plastic components appearing ready to tear. These issues were surprising and disappointing, especially given the jacket's premium price point and brand reputation. Minor Inconveniences: The zipper can be a bit finicky at times, which was a minor annoyance. Customer Service Experience: Thankfully, REI's excellent return policy allowed me to return the jacket. However, due to a price increase, I wasn't able to exchange it for the same model and instead received store credit. Final Thoughts: While the Arc'teryx Thorium Down Hoodie has some great features - lightweight design, good fit, and attractive appearance - the durability issues I experienced make it hard to recommend. In retrospect, I noticed other reviews mentioning similar problems, suggesting this might not be an isolated incident. For the price point, one would expect better longevity. I'll be trying a different brand for my next winter jacket purchase.
Weirdly tight around the neck and face. Returned
For 15-20 years I have been buying Arcteryx jackets, and I'm a Large every time. I have even had this exact jacked in a previous version in a Large. This time, the Large fits fine around my torso, but the neck is so tight that I can't do the zipper up unless I put the hood up. Even then, the neck is so tight against my face that its incredibly uncomfortable. I don't understand this fit at all. I have four other Arcteryx insulated jacked in my closet and not one of them comes even close to this weird fit. The Thorium isn't even supposed to be a fitted fit. It's listed as a regular fit. I think this is the first time I have ever returned one of your jackets!
Hello there, thank you for sharing your experience with the Thorium Hoody. We’re sorry to hear that the fit of the neck on this version didn’t meet your expectations, especially when compared to your previous jackets. We appreciate your detailed feedback on the fit, and we’ll pass it along to our design team as we continually strive to improve. We understand how disappointing it can be to return a jacket, and we’d love to help you find a different option that provides the comfort you’re used to. Please feel free to reach out if you need any assistance.
tiptop
I got this down jacket ready for winter, and I originally wanted the black and gold one. But when I saw this one at 40% off, I couldn't pass it up. When it arrived, I was stunned at how lightweight it was. The waist is a bit tight, but everything else fits fine. And seriously, with it being this cheap, I've gotta give it five stars.
Great fit and warmth - some QC Issues...
Amazing fit - I love the slightly longer length than the Cerium line. I have a cerium LT hoodie now and needed something for when its super cold. Love the fit of this in a medium - few issues however. The front zipper garage at the neckline is too tight - the zipper cannot get to the top of the collar, and this looks particularly off with the dark magic colorway, as the zipper stands out. The right collar top had some stitching with glue on it that was very hard and cut at my chin/lip every time the jacket was zipped up. My only other feedback would be that the down hood is too tight when not up, and pushes at the back of your head/neck...seems like a design opportunity for sure. I have another on order - hopefully the first two issues will be rectified with the new jacket?
Hello there, thank you for sharing your detailed feedback on the Thorium Hoody! We're glad to hear you love the fit and slightly longer length compared to the Cerium line and it’s great to know it meets your needs for colder conditions. Regarding the zipper garage and collar stitching issues, as well as the snugness of the hood, we truly appreciate your observations and will pass them along to our design team as areas for improvement.
