A bulky shoe with a comfy ride

I've worn the Women's Terrex Free low hiking shoe for about 15 miles of trail hiking now. My first impression when I put them on was that they appear quite bulky. I wear a w 7.5 or 8, these were an 8, and I felt they made my feet look quite big. The first hike was about 5.5 miles, which is more aggressive than I prefer to be in untested shoes, but they were up to the challenge. I first noticed how cushy they were, the bulk of the shoe is definitely from the added cushioning and support. They also had quite good grip on the treads. I usually get a little slip slidey going downhill on small gravel, but none of that in these shoes. I felt confident on the downhill. Lastly, I am happy to report I had no blisters or hotspots at the end of the hike, despite not slowly breaking in the shoes. They performed equally as well on the second, 10 mile hike I wore them on.

Sizing is way way off

The sizing on this shoe is way off. I'm usually a 7-7.5 women's in shoe sizing, but when I tried these on there was a full quarter of the shoe that my foot wasn't reaching. If ordering online, I'd size these down a minimum of 4 shoe sizes, but to be honest you'll probably need more. I don't recommend buying these online, go find the right size in a store if that's an option for you.

Pleasantly surprised

Used these shoes to walk the dogs so far. I usually like to try out shoes walking the dogs before I use them on a trail, in order to avoid any dreaded blisters. These shoes have great support and combined with my custom orthotics, were perfect in making my feet comfortable while using them. I was hesitant regarding what I thought might be a shoe with a little too much material high on the back heel, but I was pleasantly surprised that I haven't felt any digging near my Achilles area. I ordered a size 9 and they fit great and have a nicely wide enough toe box so that my toes don't feel scrunched up and have room for movement. I like the color, but I would like to see these with a darker upper so they don't show dirt. Overall, I am very happy with this shoe and would recommend.

Excellent trail shoe!

I was so excited to see these trail shoes because I loved Adidas in my running days! For me and hiking shoes, waterproof is a must, and I prefer having a low option for everyday hikes in addition to higher ankle support for backpacking. Blue and green are my go to colours, so that certainly doesn't hurt. The first thing I noticed when I opened the box was the shoes look huge! I actually checked to see if I'd accidentally received men's sizing, but it seems part of it is their build, and the other is they run about a half size large. No matter, I threw on my thickest pairs of hiking socks and went on our way. It took some time to get used to the extra volume behind the heel--that's were most of the extra length seems to be, and I kept bumping them going down steps the first day--but the support overall is fantastic, very stable, comfortably cushioned without too much bounce, kind to high arches, roomy enough for wide feet, and great traction. My foster pup and I have gone dozens of miles now with these shoes and look forward to many more.

Wide Load

Pros: quality materials all around: the top mesh is strong, the laces are great, love the pull tabs on the tongue and the heel Cons: these are HUGE, as in -- I took them out of the box and thought for sure that they were the wrong size by several sizes. They're not ... they just have a GIGANTIC profile. Too wide, too long. When wearing them, I look like I'm wearing clown shoes! One other weird issue -- the first time I wore them it really felt like one side was taller than the other. It was almost making me walk with a limp --- like my legs weren't both the same length.

Lightweight, cushioned, grippy, but poor sizing

The good: When I first put the shoe on, it felt incredibly comfortable - supportive with some cushion, perfect for my mildly arthritic feet. They are also lightweight. After wearing it on a hike (so far I have worn it on 3 hikes, 5-8 miles each, with a 15 lb daypack), my feet feel good, not achey. My feet give out way sooner than the rest of me, so it's no small feat that I didn't feel fatigue in the bottom of my soles. The traction is great. I wore them on trails with a lot of leaf debris, some dusty/sandy portions, some gravelly portions, and on a larger rocks, and they were grippy (and I was steady!) on all those surfaces. The not-great-but-not-terrible: The ankle support is awkward. It's intrusive and annoying when I first put the shoe on. It didn't get in the way while hiking, it might have even provided some mild support. I am a little worried it's a blister risk. The bad: The sizing is really off. I usually wear a size 7, and this shoe in a 7 is about 1.5 to 2" longer than my other sport/outdoor shoes. It isn't the worst thing in the world for my feet to have some extra toe room, but my foot does slide in the extra space, especially on downhills. On longer hikes, or if I was wearing a backpacking pack, this would be hard to deal with. Though they are quite lightweight, the mis-fit negates that easy breezy feeling of a lightweight shoe.

Good runner for narrow feet

I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. Overall, if you have narrow feet, I think these are actually a good pair of trail runners. They would work best for those who are looking for a pair of running shoes that could occasionally be taken on the trail. I would give 3.5 stars if I could. For those of you with narrow feet, this shoe provides nice cushioning for running on a street or track. These shoes feel more like street runners with treads than a dedicated trail runner. On the trail, the soles are a bit thick but some of you may appreciate the cushion. I’m a person who tends to roll her ankles with thick soles so I find myself occasionally rolling my ankles on downhills or uneven terrain. The treads on the sole of the shoes work decently well on gravelly downhills. For those with normal width feet, you might want to pass on these shoes if your feet swell during running or hiking. If these shoes feel a little snug when trying them on, be forewarned that there seems to be a low rubber lip around the front half of the shoe that prevents the shoe from stretching wider. For those of us with wide feet or bunions, this shoe was not made for us. They run narrow and there seems to be a low rubber lip around the front half of the shoe that prevents the shoe from stretching and the rubber will rub against bunions. I have normal to wide size feet with small bunions and these shoes were actually painful because of the rubber rubbing against my bunions. Sizing up a half size doesn’t help because you only get a longer toe box and the heel area becomes oddly too wide and loose.

Giant and clunky

The biggest issue I had with this shoe is the size - it is very large and feels almost clunky. I got a size 8 which is what I usually wear in hiking and running shoes (I wear a 7.5 in casual shoes) and it was easily two sizes too big for my foot. But beyond that it feels unusually large - at first I thought I had accidentally received a man's shoe, but the box definitely says women. I did try it out and found that it was comfortable to wear though I wasn't able to tighten the laces enough to get rid of the feeling that my foot was swimming around inside. The benefits are that it is a solid, stable shoe, and has good traction. I tested out the waterproofing, submerging my feet for a couple of minutes in water over the laces and they stayed nice and dry. So my bottom line with this shoe is it would be good for people with large feet (wide or tall), and who like a large shoe. Even so, I would not size up for this one, and you may even need to size down.

Disappointing quality -- already ripped.

I am a big fan of the goretex Terrex lowcut hiking shoes from years ago, and looked specifically for the updated ones to replace the old pair which lasted for years. These ones i have worn for less than ten times and already the sides have worn off -- the fabric parts have ripped and rubbed to their core. It's very disappointing. They don't make them like they used to. They are also much chunkier than the old Terrex hiking shoes which were perfect like trainers but with tough soles and thin urban-style laces.
