Super boat if the weight isn’t an issue for you.
Great boat. Did the MR340 in mine last summer. Pros: Seat comfort. Pedal drive system. Good balance of speed and stability. Cons: Heavy. Expensive. With the pedal drive, I use mine like a bicycle on the water. Having owned a Revo 13, an Outback, a Revo 16, and an Oasis, the R13 is the sweet spot/best overall boat Hobie sells in the US. Faster and lighter than the Outback, significantly more stable than the R16 while giving up very little speed.
Great, except cannot get parts
Do not buy Hobie equipment, even from REI. We have a broken rudder, and after weeks of trying by phone and email, cannot get a response from Hobie. REI says they cannot help.
Hobie’s Athlete
Best pedal kayak Hobie currently offers for big, open water, particularly inshore/offshore. Not to mention a blast on the water. Fast off the line & at cruising speed, especially with turbo fins. Super maneuverable hull. Add the sailing rudder & its a track boat. Handles swells and chop like a sea-worthy kayak should. No hull slap unlike a lot of these other pedal kayaks. It just effortlessly takes on whatever the ocean throws at it. The Outback is a cruiser. The Revo is a missle. Cons - Hobie charges a premium & this boat is no exception. Hobie parts rarely get discounted. Grab handles will eventually split & break. Rudder may need fine tuning from the factory. Check the cable tension. 180 drive needs regular maintenance. Hobie’s customer service isn’t what it used to be. If you understand what kind of kayak this is, & you use it for its intended purposes, its absolutely one he** of a pedal kayak that is simply one of a kind. 4.5/5 stars.
