Highly Recommend - light, good stability & comfort
1 year ago
When I received these in the mail I was shocked at how light the package was - not just the shoes but the entire package. These shoes are lighter than any of my other boots (I have 5 other pairs lol). I opened the box and was pleased with the aesthetics. I know, function is most important but looks are very close behind. (You wouldn’t date someone if you weren’t physically attracted to them, right?) The colors are not the common dark browns. The are a lighter and kind of muted versions of the darker colors we usually see. They are an olive green with nice light blue accents.
Now onto fit. These are a high top ( which I prefer) but some brands are difficult to get on. Not these. there is enough fabric on the tongue to allow it to be pulled wide open and slip your foot in. All of my other boots are a size 7 and so are these but I noticed immediately the toe box was narrower and my toes were right up to the very front of the boot - aside from that, the fit felt good. Something else I noticed right away is the hooks at the top for the laces are more open than other brands making it much easier to hook the laces and, and more importantly, to unhook them when removing the boot. I like the overall fit and feel of these and as I said before, they are super lightweight. Also of note is the padding around the top and back. I know from experience how important this is.
Wear - I first wore these in Yosemite - on the 4 1/2 hour drive there, during set up of our camp and tent, and then a short 3 mile hike to break them in. The bed of the boot is very comfortable. The boot feels like an extension of my foot as opposed to something I am wearing. Unfortunately, by the end of the hike, my toes felt very hot and cramped - so much so that I was wondering if I would even give them a second chance. I have to admit, it was a relief to take them off. The second time I wore them was on an 11 mile hike locally in the Santa Monica mountains. The toe box felt better when I put them on - no doubt they had stretched out a little - and that gave me hope (I really wanted them to work out). My toes didn’t overheat this time (the sun was out and despite the wind, the ground was very hot). The waterproofing was key since we went through several streams. I usually wear insoles for better arch support, but didn’t with these since they were already tight. None the less, the boots were quite supportive without them. I was really pleased with the weight (or lack thereof) and ankle support. The hike was fairly flat for the first 3 miles and then we began climbing - about 1100 feet over 2.5 miles. It wasn’t grinding but still a good grade. About mile 9 of the hike I could feel blisters forming on the tops of my toes. Luckily I brought a spare pair of boots in case this happened.
Conclusion - these are a great shoe and I would highly recommend them but I also suggest going up a 1/2 size. If not for the narrow toe box and wrong size (for me), these boots would no doubt be the faves in my collection.

Comfortable!

These boots will be a go to for me in colder weather. I hiked with these boots in 70 (ish) degree weather and my feet did get a little too warm. But other than that, they felt great with good grip, laces stayed in place and I can’t wait to add them to my rotation after the summer. I’m normally a size 7 1/2 but I got a size 8 to compensate for swelling from long distance hikes and for my wide width feet. If you have narrow feet and like wearing thin socks, you might prefer ordering true to size. Personally, the beautiful olive green color is such a bonus.

Overall great boots

I wasn't sure about these boots at first but they've really grown on me. Out of the box, they looked good and were fairly comfortable, but the toe box seemed a little too narrow for me and the heel was a little too wide. If you have wider feet, these might not be for you, though they're worth a try. I have a moody bunion on one foot that can be a problem with hiking boots, especially with narrower toes, but these were surprisingly fine. The ankle support is great. They were also easy to break in - my first hike was 3 hours, with no hot spots or blisters. I'm kind of paranoid about slipping on wet rocks, so one of my favorite parts is that the grip on the bottom of these is GREAT. So far I've taken them on a bunch of 2-3 hour day hikes, which is most of my hiking these days, but I think they'd probably still feel good at the end of a long day of hiking or backpacking. My only wish is that there was more cushion inside. My favorite hiking shoes are my Salomon Speedcross trail running shoes, which feel like walking on clouds, so now I want all hiking boots to feel that way (and honestly, I don't understand why they don't!).

Asolos are my new go-to choice for hikes
This is a great boot to add to any hiker's collection that would prefer a light and comfortable shoe. After taking them on several day hikes over moderately dry and rocky terrain, I was definitely impressed with their performance. The sigma grip compound soles are tough, and have got a pretty decent grip that kept sliding at a minimum. The Ortholite comfort foam insoles were definitely the key defining feature of the shoes--that and how light the actual boot is. No ankle fatigue from boot weight with these! The GORE-TEX lining on the shoes kept everything waterproof and comfortable, and did not interfere with the overall shoe breathability. The only thing about these boots I would mention that was not a perfect out of box experience was the more narrow toe-box width. I would recommend going a little larger in size if you have a wider toe-box, otherwise, these boots are the perfect fit for a tough terrain and a good hike.

Light weight, nice fit
The hiking shoes have been a great addition for my day hikes. They are light weight and waterproof for the shallow streams encountered in the state parks. I am a size 8.5 in normal shoes but the size 9 fits very well.

Winners!
I tried these side by side with other well reviewed hiking boots and for me, these are the clear winners! Excellent grip on slippery rocks, supportive ankle that doesn’t restrict or hurt when climbing or descending hills, good waterproofing, stable platform that still feels light and responsive. Really nothing to dislike! I kinda love ‘em!

Stylish but less comfy
I really like how these look and they mostly seem comfortable but I did note that the footbed is definitely not as cushiony as the other three pairs of boots I ordered from REI to choose amongst. I find the other ones more ugly though, so I’m faced with that dilemma. They seem to fit true to size.

Liked the old ones better

I bought Asolos about two years ago, and they were comfortable from the start. These just didn’t feel that way. Can’t say why, just don’t feel the same.
