Safe, Smart, and Commuter-Friendly!
I've been using the Giro Ethos Mips Bike Helmet for my daily 6-mile commute, and overall, it's a solid helmet. It has a lot of safety features, convenient, and comfortable. What I love most about the helmet is the visibility with front (white) and rear (red) lights incorporated into the helmet. The lights have multiple settings for blinking and intensity when all full-time. The lights also double as blinkers that are controlled by a handlebar-mounted control paired via bluetooth. It's wonderful to have on busy streets so I can keep my hands on the handlebars without hand signals. The Mips protection adds another layer of safety that I thoroughly appreciate. I (fortunately) did not test the Mips system, but the certification brings me peace of mind. The helmet was comfortable to wear and had enough adjustability to fit my head perfectly. I was concerned the helmet would be too heavy with the battery, but didn't even notice any extra weight. The rear adjustment knob allowed me to dial in the fit perfectly and the innovative chin strap (see pictures) is magnetic and is great to avoid pinches when "buckling". If you'd want to, the visor is removable, but I didn't feel the need to do so. The one potential downfall could be the breathability of the helmet. I wasn't able to test it in the warm 100 degree summers, but I did notice it helped to keep my head warm in the mornings during 30 degree winter mornings. I found the coverage to be a very solid benefit in the colder weather. If you're looking for a commuter-friendly helmet with great safety features, this is just the helmet. The built-in lights, turn signals, and Mips protection makes it a commuters dream, especially on busy city streets.
Needed more development time!
This helmet seems like a solution in need of a problem. On the surface, it makes sense - cyclists (myself included) will often strap a headlamp or taillight onto their helmet to increase visibility or illuminate what they’re looking at. And while this helmet definitely works as what my partner calls a “don’t hit me” light, it doesn’t do any sort of decent job of forward illumination. Additionally, the actual technology involved feels somewhat half-baked. Let’s start with the basics - in the package is the helmet, remote, several bands for attaching the remote to handlebars, and not one, but four, manuals covering individual elements of the parts. There is no single manual describing operation of the system. In fact, out of the box the remote did not control the helmet. It took a visit to Giro’s website to learn that I needed to pair it as a replacement remote via one of the booklets included before it would control the helmet. Lights are visible, but not illuminating. I’ve included pictures of the standard mode, the turn signal in use (which has an unavoidable beep noise with each flash), and the headlights in a controlled environment as compared to the dimmest setting of my current Light & Motion bike lamp. The dark photo is the helmet, and even that’s unfair because my camera actually switched to a longer exposure to capture the alley - making it seem even brighter than reality. Charging was also an issue. I was pleased to see both the remote and the helmet had USB-C ports, as we have several makes and models of USB-C PD chargers around the house. Unfortunately, these don’t seem to actually work with the helmet or remote. I tried models from Anker, Apple, Samsung, and Leviton, and none of them charged directly with USB-C. It would only charge using the included USB-A-to-C cable when plugged into an older USB-A charger block. It’s disappointing that we have a newer port that fails to work with newer chargers. On the helmet side, I have no concerns with the safety aspects. It is a Giro helmet, after all, and equipped with MIPS as well (standard, not spherical). It is heavier than a typical helmet, and not as well ventilated. It’s fine in cool weather at an urban pace, but anything aggressive or a warm day and you are sweating. These would be okay if the helmet did really well on the tech features, but as I’ve said, that’s sadly not the case. On the plus side, there’s a new buckle system I haven’t seen before. It magnetically engages and then slides open when ready. It takes a minute to get used to, but it’s very convient when you do. Overall, while it is a safe helmet, all of the additional features commanding the price increase do not work well. They really could have used some more time in the design phase!
Awesome integrated helmet
First, this helmet feels super solid without being heavy. I'm used to helmets that are a bit more streamlined and thought I would hate this style, but it made me feel secure without feeling bulky. Most of my riding is commuting or paved trails, and while it might be a little less aerodynamic for speed, it's a great commuter helmet. It fits true to size, has a great ratchet wheel on the back of the head for very precise fitting, and the magnet clasp under the chin takes some getting used to but feels secure and not as irritating as traditional helmet clasps. I also loved the integrated lights that come in two brightness levels and either solid or flashing. The handy remote that you can attach to your handlebars is great too, you can use the lights in the helmet as visible turn signals in addition to your hand signals. The helmet itself fits a little low on the back of the head so I had to adjust my bun, but that's not a deal breaker by any means.
Great for bike commuting!
So far I have mostly used this helmet for commuting around town. It is an excellent commuter helmet and I love the light and blinker features. The helmet is very comfortable to wear, easy to adjust, and I love the easy clasp magnetic buckle. I have not had any issue with charging the helmet as others have mentioned in the reviews. There are a couple small things that I think could be improved. The first is that I cannot turn the lights on using the remote (the instructions say you should be able to do this, but I have not been able to get it to work) - I have to use the button on the helmet itself. The second is that I wish the visor was a little larger as I am usually biking to work when the sun is coming up / biking home when it is setting. However, the blinker feature is awesome! I can even press the remote with my winter biking gloves on, and I like that it makes a sound when it is on so that I know it was activated. Overall I think this is a great helmet and would recommend to others.
Bought this twice but neither charged.
I really like the design of this helmet and the lights work great when charged. But you can't charge it. I tried multiple chargers that are able to charge my other devices. I bought 2 of these helmets and they both had the same problem. I would stay away from this one.
Giant helmet, beep signaling, clasp gets stuck
This helmet is going straight back to REI. Got the black large and although it fits my head ok, this helmet is giant. I look like Sandler from The Waterboy this helmet is so big. But the worst part about it by far is the under chin buckle. It slides in sideways and is magnetic. I got extremely claustrophobic trying to unbuckle it and almost had a panic. In addition, the helmet makes beeping noises when signaling. And has no way of turning all lights amber. Just bad in every way.
Battery issue
Helmet portion works fine. "Be seen" lights are good but the battery only worked for the first few rides. will be exchanging for the same helmet but hopefully with a better battery. A+ for REIs return/exchange policy.
