I love this shirt. I have had it for 2 years now and wear it almost year round. It is lightweight and well styled. It keeps me comfortably warm in cold weather under a jacket, and, without a jacket, has never gotten too warm for me, even in moderate/spring weather. It is great under a rain jacket. It washes nicely and keeps its shape (washing machine delicate or hand wash, dry outside). It feels sturdy and soft but is not baggy. One of the best hiking/backpacking buys I've ever made.
I love that the top is thin for layering. I wore a sleeveless T shirt under it, a winter vest and a thin down jacket on my Antartica cruise and was warm on deck. Since it’s wool, it’s a great all year weather top. And since it’s thin and slightly form fitting, great as a tennis topper in cooler wether. I usually wear a Medium (5’2, 135, 36C) but the Small was a better fit. The light gray is a great color for traveling, and the lightness is great for packing.
I love this top. Zipped up with a vest or jacket, it is incredibly warm and keeps the draft off my neck (perfect fit neck, tight and high enough). But once I start exercising and get warm, the top is lightweight enough to not be suffocating and the neck unzipped cools me down quickly. No thumb holes as other reviews stated, but I'm fine with that.
I bought this to replace the PhD light zip merino long sleeve, which SmartWool has discontinued. This similar top is not as good. It does not has the thumb holes which made a big difference on cold mornings. And the klunky new zipper pull is bright white high contrast. The M is long and baggy on me. (I am 5ft 7 and fairly slim.) I'm disappointed and going to return it.
Much thinner than I was expecting and no thumb holes - others that I've gotten before are a little thicker with the thumb holes so either this has changed or maybe I had a different style.
I wanted to love this shirt but it was very thin and see-through.
