Poor Design: Locking tabs broke after 1 year
The internal locking mechanism corroded and broke after 1 Year - which makes the poles completely unusable. I was packing my poles for a trip, and was collapsing them down when the silver tab that you have to press in to unlock them, fell out of 1 pole and the other one is now stuck. I don't understand why they would use a metal that would corrode so easily. After experiencing this with my poles, I went online and found many others have had the same issue with theirs going back many years - so clearly Black Diamond is not making any serious efforts to fix the design flaw. These are expensive trekking poles that I expected to last a long time. I have a pair of 20 year old Leki trekking poles that still work. Looks like I am going back to Leki.
I bought these poles just
I bought these poles just before leaving for a 3 day/2 night backpacking trip in Yosemite. I own a pair from a competitor's brand, but hated the twist lock mechanism. This pair of poles had almost all the features I was looking for. They fold down small, the quick lock mechanism makes for on the fly adjustments, and the cork handle does not stain my hands. I did noticed the poles flexed a little more than I had expected, but did not affect performance. The only thing I didn't get with these poles were carbon fiber, because they would sold out, but these poles were still pretty light. I look forward to putting many more miles on these poles.
major mfg defect - locking pin broke 15 miles in
These poles have a spring loaded locking push pin that’s made of two metals that will and did break. The pin has to hold all the weight you put on the pole, and because it’s two different metals is a major weak spot. While innovative in theory (push pin over clamp lock) It’s a very bad design and it was a huge problem - my right pole broke 15 miles into trekking the 100 mile Wonderland Trail in WA. I taped the pin in (luckily it fell into the pole, not the trail) for the rest of the hike which was sketchy. The second pole broke the EXACT same way when I tried to collapse it after the hike. Avoid these poles!! The grips are very nice, but the design of the poles sucks. Don’t risk it!!
The locking button broke off - on both poles!
Clearly there is an underlying issue with the quality of the trekking poles. The locking button snapped off on BOTH of my trekking poles - thus making the poles unable.
Love my poles
No issues with these poles at all! My small hands fit so well in the hand grips, like they were custom made. And I LOVE the red color. I made a lined denim drawstring bag for them right away. Can't wait to trek around with them. Thank you
Locking mechanism broke on both poles--useless
We bought these for my wife who loved them on several training hikes and for the first half of a 140-mile walk in Europe. Then, the little silver button locking mechanism on first one pole and the other fell out, rendering the poles useless for the whole second half of our trekking tour. I had to carry them in my backpack just so I can return them to REI when we get back. I have other Black Diamond poles for backcountry skiing which are great, but this obvious design flaw on these poles (which I now belatedly see other reviewers have experienced) is inexcusable. She had even been very careful when collapsing and opening the poles, so there is no reason they should have failed. It made the second half of our tour much more challenging for her, as there was no where to get new poles. We'll obviously be looking to other brands for replacements now that we're back.
Critical Pop Out Button Does Not Work
I really like these poles. HOWEVER, the button that pops out (the critical part that keeps the pole sections tensioned together) has either broken off or twisted itself into one of the poles. No button pops out, and the pole is useless. Unfortunately when I pulled the pole off my pack to extend for the downhill, it didn't work, and I was at 13,000' with miles of downhill and steep snowfields to cross. I have had the poles for a little over a month and have hiked with them several times a week.
Locking mechanism broke, AGAIN!
The locking mechanism on BOTH of my poles broke - in two different ways. And this is already a replacement pair after one of my earlier poles broke IN THE SAME MANNER. In summary, 3 out of 4 of these poles broke! There is clearly some design fault and Black Diamond shouldn't even be selling these poor quality items. This time I will be returning the poles for a full refund and buying a different pair instead of getting a replacement pair.
Broken locking button
I've had these just over 3 months and have used them for around 125 miles of moderate hiking. I bought these while picking up some other gear and didn't research them much. If you look at several other one-star reviews, you'll see a repeated topic of the detent button that keeps the poles locked in the extended position has a tendency to break off leaving the poles useless. Same thing happened to me after doing a short section of the AT today. I was disappointed but not surprised. My other complaint about these poles is that they're a little rattly because of the z-fold feature. The cordage that runs down the inside of the shaft to keep the poles together when they are folded bounces off the inside of the pole. On longer quiet hikes, it gets a little irritating for me. One side rattled significantly more than the other, which made me notice it even more.
FLZ Trekking Poles
So far so good with my new trekking poles. My first pair served me well for 3 years. I broke one this winter coming down from South Double Top in the Catskills. My new pair is an improvement. The cork handles are more generous in overall circumference which fit my hands better. The lock mechanism is a vast improvement over my first pair that incorporated a retractable collar which collapsed on me when i reach too far down on the pole when ascending a step climb. I`m very pleased with my new trekking poles. Kudos to Black Diamond for making such a great product. Happy Trails . . . Mick
