I am 59 and my husband and I wanted to hike Isle Royale National Park as we did 32 years ago. I ordered this from outlet since I figured I probably wouldn't be backpacking many more times and the price was right. The backpack has comfortable hip padding and easy to adjust padded shoulder straps. This 60 had plenty of room for a 5 night trip. Loved the midway zipper so i didnt have to empty whole backpack to find something on the bottom. The water bottle pockets on either side made for easy access as well. I do wish the zippered pockets on waist were big enough to hold my phone (for easy access for pics) but as this was purchased from REI Outlet II have have to assume the newer model has probably corrected this. Thanks for having great products and a staff who is knowledgable
Great backpack for those who are starting out backpacking and having pared down gear or are like me and like a few “luxury items” not the lightest bag but it gives good support when fit correctly. Has great features and is very efficient if you pack it correctly. Fits all my things I need as a solo backpacker, tent, larger sleeping bag, cooking gear, sleeping pad etc, including a bear can. The bottom loops aren’t the best for stowing anything that’s not very large, slips out a bit. Included small daypack is perfect for small hikes from base camp or collecting water into a bladder after filtering without bringing a huge bag.
I have a lighter bag from a different vendor. When I weighed it, it was a little over 6 lbs with the items inside. The DEVA, although it fit better, with the SAME stuff, weighed over 9 lbs. The lighter pack has smaller belts, buckles, zippers, and thinner straps; both have side pockets, load lifters and two pockets on the belt too. The lighter pack has a removable "brain". The Deva fits better, and I have used it all over the world. However, the weight difference does give me pause. I may be "too old" to haul this bag ( 72, female, 119 #) I really need a lighter option. The Deva works well and veteran of many trips. So not sure. Perhaps, I can make a more custom fit by harvesting the thinner straps from the lighter pack.
At REI, I tried on just two packs with weights to simulate a full backpack. The first backpack jabbed into my hip and felt heavy and uncomfortable. The second was this one, which felt like a cloud against my hip and redistributed the weight so well that my pack felt at least 10 lbs lighter. (I'm 5'2" for reference.) I was so impressed I just bought it. Only when I began to use it did I realize how many other cool features it has. It has a rain cover, an inner daypack (that I use sometimes as a psuedo dry-bag), and awesome pouches throughout the front that allow you to organize and retrieve things quickly. The main portion of the pack can be accessed from the top or the sides, which is so helpful. The small zipper pouches around the hip aren't quite big enough for my phone, so I usually use a fanny pack to store my phone in an accessible place while hiking. So far, I've only used it for 1 night trips, but I'm excited to take this on a weeklong hike! Can't recommend this enough - give it a try!
All round great backpack, lots of useful pockets with a front zipper to get into main compartment. Quite comfortable with the weight distribution, made carrying 32lbs much easier than anticipated.
the backpack is fine, But there is no rain cover included when I received it. I emailed to the REI, no one responded
Just received this bag, I tried the newer model on in store since I saw the older model for a really great deal online during one of REI's member sales. Unfortunately my phone doesn't fit in the waist pockets. I have an iPhone 14, all good though since I don't really plan to use it for anything. reason for 4 stars is that I haven't been out with it yet so I can't give an accurate review. I love all the pockets that it has and that it comes with a rain cover and day pack.
I find detailed reviews helpful, so here is my long-winded review: I really like this backpack, but like all backpacks, it's not perfect. I have used it on the Zion Traverse trail, the Kungsleden trail in northern Sweden and in the Sawtooth wilderness this past year since I bought it. It's held up well in sun, heat, snow, rain and mud. I even slipped on a rock in a river crossing and the bottom of my pack fell in the river with me. It padded my fall, but more importantly, though I pulled it out of the water right away when I got it off, nothing inside was wet when it sat in the water for a few seconds. It's very comfortable and I like all of the pockets and the side entry zipper to reach things further down. I like the large zippered pockets on both hip belts, too. Some pack brands' pockets are so small my cell phone doesn't even fit or only a tiny snack will fit. I do wish this pack had more loops to attach things to on the outside and on the front of the shoulder straps, but not a big deal. I like the bottom section of the pack better on my prior Deuter pack as it was larger and had better separation from the things in the main compartment above. This pack only has a little flap with two toggle buttons to separate it. I just leave them unbuttoned because it would be too small with them buttoned (I keep my sleeping bag or quilt, sleep pad, pillow and ultra lite camp chair in this part). Unfortunately, it makes it a little awkward when packing up each morning because until there is enough in the main compartment, my sleeping bag, pad and camp chair that I keep in the bottom compartment are pushing up and I have to force them back to the bottom while I pack. I do find the fit on my back, shoulders and hips to be very comfortable, definitely more comfortable than my Deuter. It's easy to make micro adjustments to customize the fit. It also has not had any squeaks like my friend's Osprey pack seems to have at least once a trip that drives her nuts. I really like the ability to grab my extra water in my Nalgene water bottle on my own when my water bladder runs out. It's easy to reach the wide, round water bottle pocket while I'm wearing the pack. Previously I had to ask my friends to pull it out and hand it to me with other packs or take off the pack. I do agree with other reviewers that the empty pack is not "ultra light". It's a little heavier than I'd like, but overall I'm willing to tolerate it as it's very comfortable, has lots of storage and is very durable. I also would recommend to Gregory to change the loop inside the pack that is meant to hold the water bladder (to keep it from slipping down). I had to rig a tiny carabiner through the small webbing loop after I loop it through my Osprey water bladder loop. Velcro or a snapping strap would be much better to hold the bladder. Adding a rain cover would be a nice touch, too. All this being said, I would definitely buy this pack again. It's been a great pack overall!
Just took this pack on a 30-mile girls’ trip and it held up well. Love the individual pockets! The size and weight worked for me well; it was full, but I wouldn’t want any more room because it would add too much weight. My only whine, which is minor, is I wanted larger hip pockets. I also don’t have a lot of skin padding around my hips and thus, would have loved a bit softer/thicker hip padding. Overall great pack.
A nice bag. However, I ended up switching to a lighter, less bulky bag after one day on the trail. Side pockets and drink holder are not conveniently placed for easy access.
