Battery life lives up to expectations

There has been considerable discussion on what the actual runtime is on the BioLite 425, including some reports of very short runtimes of less than 30 minutes. The manufacturer claims 4 hours of battery life on “high”. Earlier this week I received two lamps (one for me, one for the wife) and thought I would run them through a battery life test. I stopped the clock when the light became noticeably dim – to the point it no longer functioned well. I found that you had about ten minutes after it started warning you that the batter was low (it flickers three times) before it went into the super dim mode. I’m guessing this is what BioLite calls the “reserve” mode. The spot mode is quite bright. Very easy to do a trail run at night. The flood setting is bright enough to walk with but doesn’t cast enough light to run by. Still, it provides enough light to read by or make dinner at a campsite. Flood only: Lamp A: 4 hours 20 minutes Lamp B: 5 hours* Spot only: Lamp A 4 hours 25 minutes Lamp B 5 hours 25 minutes* Flood & spot: Lamp A 4 hours 10 minutes Lamp B 4 hours 1 minute *For some reason, Lamp B was somewhat dimmer than Lamp A over the duration of these two tests. Not surprisingly, it was able to last longer since it was drawing less current. Overall, pretty solid results. If you are getting noticeably shorter runtimes, you likely have a defective unit. I didn’t check how dim you would have to reduce the brightness to get to the 60 hour mark, but the lamps are bright enough in spot mode to dial back the setting some. I could see 8 hours as very doable. I was a little surprised that the flood and spot together lasted almost as long as each individually. I think the power to each is reduced a little when operating both lamps together. All-in-all, I like this headlamp. No new electronics should be brought to the market in 2023 utilizing micro USB, so I was glad BioLite added USB C to this model at least. Love the rear red lamps. There are two in the back and only one on the front. So if you are doing some night photography or astronomy, you might want to spin the headlamp around and use the two red lamps on the back. Note the red lamps are “flood” and not a “spot” lamp.

PLEASE spec run times in cold temperatures!

The specs on this headlamp looked like exactly what I wanted for night hiking. However, I really only hike in the dark in winter, and the battery life right around freezing was not adequate for a less than 2 hour hike at that temperature, and not even at full brightness. While it can run from an external pack on the USB cable, I decided I’d rather have a bigger battery in the light. I emailed BioLite but they could not give me run times at different temperatures. Since this is critical in outdoor gear, I will not be trying another headlamp with a rechargeable battery where they don’t specify temperature performance. I’ll go as far to say it’s irresponsible to not specify this. Non-rechargeable lithium batteries are excellent in the cold, and light weight but expensive. I’d hoped rechargeables had improved more. PLEASE give me the specs so I’m not guessing when I purchase! If REI required this info to sell products it might help reduce returns.

It’s the most frustrating headlight I’ve ever used

It has a single button for 100 different functions, the headband is too delicate in some parts and too bulky in others so it’s unbalanced, the tight rubber-bands for resistance make it too difficult to adjust without having to sit down and really take some time with it, but then it just comes loose after about 30 mins of wearing. Battery life is very short no matter how much you dim it, much shorter than most cheaper models. Fabric is too hot because of how it’s so flush against your skin. Very bright bulb, like super bright. Nice safety light on rear batter.

Thanks for getting in touch. We opted for a single button for both on/off and mode changes to simply the user experience. We've also positioned the lamp and battery at opposite ends to help keep it balanced. We're really sorry to hear that the lamp didn't meet your expectations. The lamp is expected to run 60 LO/4 HI. If you're interested, we'd like to connect to learn more about your experience and to troubleshoot any issues with runtime. We can be reached at support@bioliteenergy.com.

Best bike light!

I never thought I'd use a headlamp as a bike light but it's perfect. Slips on the helmet easily and stays snug. Light is bright both front and back and because it's on my head it moves with me and is higher up for cars to see. Small enough to packs into a pocket between rides. And the battery lasts long enough that I don't have to charge very often. Solved so many problems I didn't even know I had. Highly recommend.

Excellent comfort & back lite, but short battery

Purchased this from an REI staff recommendation after telling them the main purpose was for running. Running in the city, I love this lamp. However, as others have said, it has an exceptional short battery. The dimming happens quickly. With a full charge the light dims after 20-30 minutes. When it dims, it is a generic low flood light. What I love about this light is the fit, comfort, and red blinking back light. If it did not have the back light I would easily take this back simply due to the short battery. I will only use this for city runs. I just cannot trust this in the backcountry or for trail runs.

HORRIBLE HEADLAMP

So incredibly disappointed with this headlamp. It dims in about 10 minutes going from brightly illuminating the whole street to pitch black! I am an early morning runner and need a bright headlamp as my neighborhood does not have streetlights. I have been in contact with Biolite attempting to resolve this issue but all I’ve gotten so far is that all headlamps dim and closing initial brightness is to be expected. I have sent video of how extreme the dimming is and how within 20 minutes the headlamp is completely useless. Even with a full charge! Definitely DO NOT RECOMMEND!

Poor battery life. Life in a strobe.

I have had this headlamp for around a year. Hadn't tried to use it consistently till now but had been carrying it as "just in case" light. Glad I haven't had to count on it. Goes from full charge to flashing at you within an hour and a half of use at a lower setting. It depletes faster if you turn it on for a short bit and then let it sit for a while. Say only 30min cumulative operating time. The reserve feature activates and I even had that that go out on me in <15 minutes once. The only reason it doesn't get zero stars is that when it does work boy can it throw photons! It really lights up your world, even on the lower settings, when it is working. The locking feature is nice too.

Not amazed

While the headlamp itself fits really comfortably on my head the battery is horrible. It's quoted as lasting 4 hours on high and I just drained it on a 45 minute run..... It also does the same thing as other people commentwd- it auto dims itself after a few minutes, requiring you to keep putting it back on high. I have a hard time night running and thought this would help but I'll be returning it. Kudos for the red rear light, comfort and charging capabilities but I need more time with light than what I'm getting!

Comfortably fits human heads!

If you're anything like me, your forehead is curved. Other well-reviewed headlamps I've used are flat. With those flat headlamps, if I secure the headlamp to my head snugly enough that it won't fall off whilst I move, the flat back of the lamp presses into my forehead in a very uncomfortable way, leaving a mark. The designers of this BioLite headlamp took into account that most users' foreheads are curved and made the lamp portion... curved. The lamp itself is nestled into a soft, but durable, fabric strap. This, combined with the aforementioned curvature, ensures a comfortable fit and no unsightly forehead mark. If you have a flat forehead, perhaps a different headlamp would be right for you. But if you have a curved forehead, you should strongly consider getting this BioLite headlamp. Bonus: a built-in, rear-facing red light, which is perfect for walking or running at night. Another bonus: USB-C charging, so no heavy batteries that need to be replaced.

Terrible battery life. Not worth buying

This might be one of the worst headlamps I’ve used. Lots of positives about how it fits but it dies within 2 hours or less. If it dies and it doesn’t help you see it’s useless. I took this on a night time trail run and it wa dead by the time I got back. It was a 40 minute run. Yes it was cold out and I know that affects the battery life but it was well above freezing. This is unacceptable. Don’t buy it
