Dangerous pin system
These are incredibly dangerous bindings. The pin mechanism comes out frequently while I'm riding and its happened in all terrain. I'm an advanced rider and worked for decades as a snowboard instructor so I thought it was just because of the steep, snowy terrain I was riding. However I hiked at a resort recently and it happened on a mellow groomed trail too. It's so dangerous, i feel lucky i havent gotten seriously hurt yet from my binding detaching from the board mid run. I would highly reccomend looking for other systems. It's unfortunate because these are light and comfortable otherwise.
Dangerous play in binding/pin system
I bought these last season and was excited to receive them. Unfortunately, there is play in the bindings that I cannot get rid of. I have tightened, assembled, and reassembled the binding and it is my impression that the tolerances of the pin holes in the binding itself are not tight enough. The pin is able to wiggle somewhat, which allows the bindings to rotate ~1-3 degrees, by my estimate. This was a contributing factor in an accident I had running these bindings inbounds in moderately technical terrain. I was unable to keep an edge and hit a rock as a result, shattering my kneecap. After a 12-month recovery I have recently reached out to Union regarding the issue, but I believe that the play in these bindings did not do me any favors in my accident. I cannot recommend these to anyone after my experience.
Not designed for use in the snow
These bindings are difficult to latch properly into ride mode once they become caked with snow. This means the pins come loose on bumpy exits from tours, and then the bindings detach from the board. Very unsafe. Other than that....sure, they ride great.
Simple durable affordable
I've been using the Explorer binding for two seasons. Mainly short tours in powder snow. I've had no issues. it's super simple to mount and use. nothing has ever come loose or broken. Changeover is simple and hasn't jammed with ice. I have no complaints.
A bit tricky but good.
These are very comfortable and feel like normal snowboard, bindings while riding. I will never ride sparks again. Yes, at first, I had some of the same issues as others are complaining about but you just need to make sure that the pin string is clear and "snap" the pin into its proper position and it won't come out. Also clear the snow from the discs before twisting the bindings on. My only complaint is that the riser bar has only one position, and it is not very high.
Simple and Easy
Super straightforward to install and very easy to switch from ski to snowboarding.
