Really great headphones
I run at night and on a road that is moderately high traffic (not as much when I run) and the speed limit is 55 mph, so I need to hear these cars coming. These work great for that and I can still hear my music great. They are very comfortable and easy to use. I haven't tested the battery life yet, but have been great on my shorter runs (longest I've gone so far is just 3.5 miles) and there was still quite a bit of charge left. There isn't a way that I ve noticed to see how much charge is left though. The voice when you turn it on just give a generic "high", "low", etc.
Shokz OpenRunPro Headphones
Shokz OpenRunPro I was provided the Shokz OpenRunPro sport headphones to test by REI. To be candid, I initially didn’t know anything about this product, other than that they were headphones. I am also not a highly technical person but was able to get comfortable with this product after a few days and now after 7 days of using them it’s almost second nature. The short instruction guide showed the three buttons, power/volume on the right and on the left side a Multifunction button that allows one to pause, advance, go backwards and even answer calls. More on that later. Pairing to one device is very easy, although one issue that I continue to struggle with are the times when you need to actually see the buttons but also listen to “Audrey”, the voice that provides audio guidance to users. It’s not that easy and you do feel that one needs eyes in the back of your head. Especially if you are trying to use these early in the morning outdoors. I initially paired this with my iPhone so I could test out listening to music on Spotify or Youtube. The sound isn’t great, but it is more that acceptable given the intended usage. There is a nice bass response and as I used these more and more I got comfortable with the quality. Shokz OpenRunPro are not in ear headphones. I did not know that initially, but a simple online review explained that the placement is actually in front of both ears. The intention is to place them behind your head and over the ear, but the speaker itself stays outside (the ear). It doesn’t take long to get used to it, and these are extremely durable plastic. I didn’t try to twist them but it does seem like they would be tough to break. My neighbor asked me about these when I was trying them out, and wondered why I just didn’t run or walk with my airpods. The truth is I rarely if ever take the airpods outside in a sweaty activity as they would be so easy to lose, and once one is gone then you almost have to buy another expensive pair. The Shokz being a one piece and held in place over the ears would be difficult to lose and because they aren’t in your ear the concern about them falling out due to perspiration is nil. There are a few things I would put in the suggestion box for this product. The battery life is very good, apparently about 10 hours between full charges, but you can do a quick charge with the cable provided and get a few hours boost in a matter of minutes. But the same button turns the headphones on and off. Audrey will tell you something that sounds like “Power off” but it could just as easily be “Power on”. They really should make this more distinctive. There is also a way to check the battery status, while the music is paused but I could never get that to work. It wasn’t a big deal as Audrey generally tells you the battery status when you initially power it on. There are two modes for listening, Standard (Music) and Vocal Booster (podcasts, audiobooks). I left it in Standard and the podcast sounded just fine. The instruction guide says you can switch between the two by pressing and holding both buttons at the same time until you hear a beep, but that was very difficult to accomplish. I never got that to work, but it can be done on the app if it were really important. As I said earlier, I initially paired these with my iPhone, but that weighs a fair amount so I also wanted to pair it with my iPod Touch, which is a much lighter device. There are instructions online that show how to do this, but it took me several tries and a decent amount of time before it worked. I also tried pairing this with my HP laptop, but it just didn’t work at all. I suspect it is user error or a problem with the laptop, although my airPods work perfectly so I just decided to leave it alone. The app is helpful once you’ve done the pairing and designating to the headphones which device you want to use. I am going to have to test this a few more times to make sure. The Multifunction button mutes the music quickly with one touch. That can be helpful if you need to talk to someone or just need a pause. I had less success advancing the track (hit the button twice) and even less going to the previous track (three pushes of the button). It’s a bit touchy, especially if you are working out and your hands have moisture. Walking Test REI asked me to try these outdoors three to five times. I am a long time runner, but carrying a phone or iPod to listen is tricky. My iPhone is too heavy to carry while running and wearing an arm band is not something I want to do. Making this more interesting was a lagging psoas injury that limited my running the past few weeks, so instead I just went on several walks with my wife. It is very warm in the South already. Wearing a hat, sunglasses and the Shokz requires a bit of planning but I put the headphones on first, made sure they were on and paired, then the hat and sunglasses after. A person with long hair also has to make sure they can wear these comfortably, especially if. Like my wife, uses a hairpiece. Something also to consider if using these in actual training are the multiple technologies you have at your fingertips. In my case I had my Garmin watch which I use to time myself, get lap splits and monitor heart rate/calorie burn. I also have the headphones with multiple buttons as well as the iPhone or iPod. That is a lot of things to keep straight and it can be easy to mess up if you aren’t careful. I was holding my phone while walking for an hour and on multiple occasions I managed to pause the music accidentally. At first I thought it was the Shokz, but I realized I touched something on the phone, turning off the app. The most important take away from the two walks are that the headphones work flawlessly, but if you are intending to have a conversation, you need to keep the volume well below half. Anything louder than that and you really cannot hear, even with your ear uncovered. The pause button does become your friend. But after my wife peeled off, I just used the headphones as intended with music at a suitable volume and I could still hear cars or other people. I felt very safe. I don’t know exactly how these might work if one were cycling in a peloton or running in a pack. That could be tricky. Indoor Rower Test I listened to a new (Wilco) album with Spotify. It is a 77 minute album, and it sounded fine with no connection problems. While the erg is not an outdoor activity, I had an oscillating fan behind me and the flywheel makes constant noise, so I was pleased with the ability to hear the music while also keeping my ears open in case the doorbell rang or my home phone. It helps that the rower has a cradle for the iPhone so you don’t have to carry it but have quick access if you need to get to a different app. Pool Test The Shokz can get wet, but are not waterproof. But sitting by the pool after a swim went well. I could hear the conversation with my friends if I kept the volume around a 4 of 10, but if I really needed to talk I just hit the pause/mute button on the left. I could also see using these to listen to an audio book or catching on on a podcast. Final thoughts Initially when I got these, I cheated and saw the retail price and was a bit surprised. Then I realized that the latest version of the airPods are more expensive and while the sound is arguably better, the risk of losing one or both of them running or cycling has always been a big deterrent. The Shokz are durable, and would be a great gift for those who want to exercise, be able to listen to music or podcasts and also have their ears available. Disclosure I opened the box and read the very daunting sticker that informed the user that the product contains BPA and could be harmful. It also directed me to a California website. I did read up on it, and before using, called a relative who actually lives in California and is aware of concerns about BPA being in plastics. But after speaking we concluded that the risk with this product is extremely low and much more prevalent in drinking glasses and bottled water. He said I should be pretty comfortable testing or using them for short periods was not going to cause any harm. Good to know. I do recommend this product.
Surprisingly great sound!
I have been using the Shokz OpenRun Pro and I really enjoy them. I am not a fan of ear phones. Every time I run or sweat, earphones want to fall out, and I end up constantly fidgeting with the ear plugs. It's uncomfortable for me to keep pushing the headphones into my ears. I first thought the Shokz were going to be too tight against my head. They are not. It is a very comfortable fit in the ear area, but they do not go in your ears. I was amazed with the sound for this type of device. It's not "noise canceling" good, but I can hear everything coming from my phone to the Shokz. You can also use it to talk on the phone. It works very well for this. The device is thin, lightweight, and stays glued to your head without being annoying. The Shokz easily paired with my Android phone. I haven't run them completely out of battery yet so I don't know the total run time for a charge. Charging is the one area that I have a con for this device. I only found one issue with this device. The charging cable (included) is a proprietary cable connection. If you don't have the provided USB cable, you won't be able to charge it. The connection is magnetic and it works well. I just wish it had a USB C connector so I only have to carry one cable. I hope I don't lose this one! Everything is packaged in a nice carrying case that is custom fit for the device. Seems like it will protect the headphones very well. I downloaded the Shokz App for the headphones. This makes it easier to adjust settings, and you can also update the firmware here. It's a simple little app that works well. Overall, I am very happy with the Shokz OpenRun Pro headphones. They feel great whenever I run and exercise, whether I'm sweaty or not. I also wanted to note they don't slide around or bounce on your head when you're active. They have just the right amount of tension to stay put without hurting your skull! They are very comfortable. I received the Shokz OpenRun Pro for free for an honest review, and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone who has an active lifestyle and does not like in-ear headphones!
Great for listening in all occasions.
These headphones area built with great quality and a solid construction. They fit snuggly but not to tight that it gives you a headache. The sound quality is great considering that you have nothing actually in your ears. These are great if you are working in an office setting, or have kids and you still need to hear other things going on. The charger works great and is magnetic so it attaches with ease. The case that these come in is a nice plus as it protects them and will help keep you from misplacing them in a bag when not in use. Overall a great product for anyone on the go who does not need noise cancelling.
Headphones are good for when you are moving!
I put these on this morning after I charged them. I wore these up to the Rattlesnake Ledges. I could tell from the moment I put them on that they were not going to come off. They go around your head and not on top. They were very secure, but did not irritate my head. I am completely bald. I shave my head smooth everyday and if they have a hotspot I would know. They don’t go into your ear so they don’t irritate them either. That is why I don’t where ear buds, I have to go over the ear and these are perfect. They paired with my phone easily. They sound really good. I was on the 3rd Ledge and a guy came on the ledge with a pair on. I asked him what he thought and he said he liked them a lot. He said he was going to buy another pair, because his battery was losing some of its power over time. That impressed me, since he said he would buy them again and thought that the benefits were great. I know that battery powered things lose their strength over time, so that doesn’t bother me.
Great for vehicle awareness!
I was excited to receive these for review as part of the REI product advisors' program. The headphones were very easy to pair with my phone and the headphones charged very quickly before their first use. It rained most of the first week after I received these, so I decided to try them while exercising inside. The headphones are lightweight and comfortable to wear. User controls are very small, but simple to remember and use. I never received a phone call while wearing these but found the quality and clarity of the music to be excellent. The headphones stayed in place well during activity and endured perspiration well. After using them on two occasions in the gym these are my thoughts. If you are looking for an immersive music experience while lifting weights or using cardio equipment, these are probably not for you. Because of the open ear design, I was able to hear what was going on around me. But it was not overly distractive from enjoying the music while exercising. Peripheral noise was less of a problem in the cardio area, which is generally much quieter than the weight room. The weather improved during week two and I was able to use the headphones outside and more as they were intended to be used. I love to walk several miles at a time around town or in my hilly neighborhood and it was nice to listen to music while exercising outside. I was afraid the headphones may interfere with the fit of my sunglasses, but found I was able to make these work just fine. The headphones remained in place well and were comfortable during movement. As you might imagine I encounter vehicles, animals and many other potential safety concerns while exercising in and around town. The open ear design of these headphones is great for listening to music but remaining aware of your surroundings and potential hazards while exercising. If you primarily exercise in urban environments and want to remain aware of your surroundings, these are perfect. So far, I've used the headphones for about 6 hours and they still have plenty of battery charge left. The carrying case for the headphones works well to store and protect them and there is room in the case for accompanying instructions, etc. All in all, these are great for exercising outdoors safely and the awareness capability while wearing these headphones more than outweighs a less dynamic music experience.
It's a good purchase, feel
It's a good purchase, feel great in my ears, accurate bluetooth pairing, very clear and loud sound, fast shipping, I received it very soon...
Battery life is not ten
Battery life is not ten hours the only headset I have that even last an extended period time is my treks that older. I really like them but they are a little big. I wear them a lot though. Anyway I have tried a lot of models and sent my reviews with no response. I like aftershokz/ shokz but I'm getting frustrated about the battery life. The newest pair I have the battery only lasted a few hours. I tried a different company with the same ear concept. I dont like them they claim long battery life too. Not true. My suggestion for Shokz is to work on real extended battery life and offering colors for all the models along with the different size choices. Karen M
Fantastic openear headphones for activities
A fantastic piece of technology. Bone conduction technology had been around for a while but I daresay this is my first time experiencing it and it blew me away. The first time I put the headphones on and turned on the music, I was not expecting the music to come in that clear and crisp. It felt as if the music was playing in the room. Typical headphone or earbuds shuts out the noise around you, where at times can be a danger especially on the road. The openear concept gives you the best of both worlds: having the ability to hear what's going on around you while having music play. The quality of the headphones seems well made although I would have liked the waterproofing to be a bit more. Fortunately, with its rating, sweat and light rain should be ok. Pairing via bluetooth is incredibly easy, my phone was instantly able to find it and pair it right away. Only weird part is that the headphones don't power off by itself so definitely be mindful in turning it off or else the battery will drain! As for the sound itself, I wasn't expecting it to be on par with closed-ear systems. Its just simply not possible. However, for what it is, the quality of the sound is pretty amazing. I am able to hear everything the music has to offer as well as spoken speech in podcasts. What's even more amazing is that there is absolutely no sound spillage at all. I would absolutely recommend this product. It is a bit on the expensive side but the technology behind it is pretty spectacular.
Cute ☺️
Love the mini size as a female! This is my first pair of bone conduction headphones, rather impressive. Came with a nice carrying case for travel/protection too! So far they have a great battery life. Only draw back is I feel they could be a bit louder while still allowing you to be aware of surroundings. Overall, I would purchase again, but only with a coupon or promo code!
