I am very happy with the Bangtail boot. I spend alot of time outdoors in mountainous terrain and so far these boots have kept my feet warm and dry; especially dry when walking through sloppy ugly melted slush. These boots are not too bulky and am able to add YakTrax or snow shoes with no problem. The high-top design reduces the chance of snow coming in from the top and getting socks wet. I also have found that when it gets REALLY cold there is room for toe warmers. I am also pleased with the fact that if I go indoors with these boots on, they do not overheat or feel big and clunky. Most winter days these are on my feet all day.
This is my third set of Oboz boots/shoes, so I have some reasonable experience with the products of this company. Pros: Very light boot, even for the overall size Excellent grip in the snow/slippery conditions Waterproof Cons: Not very warm for insulated boots Snow clumps in the tread very easily Incredibly difficult to tighten laces, especially over the mid-foot, because it's virtually impossible to tighten over the top of your foot, it allows for too much play inside the boot to comfortably snowshoe Fairly expensive Debatable: Very narrow, good for my foot The sole is very soft, nice to walk in general, but it lacks that firm shank of my other Oboz
I tried several different snowshoes before settling on these and I'm not disappointed. I had the chance to use them walking & hiking through snow at Rocky Mountain National Park in December (low down to about -3F) and again while hiking & snowshoe backpacking in in the Yosemite high country (mostly in low teens but down to -8F at night). They have a nice balance of support & just enough flex so they don't feel clunky. They work well hiking with snowshoes, but they are also grippy when walking around icy areas in general. My feet were warm mostly but my got chilly in lower single-digit F temps. They are waterproof, my feet stayed dry and I didn't want to take them off after wearing them all day.
Coming to these boots from the Oboz Sawtooth insulated hikers I've been wearing for a few years, I'd have to say these boots are only OK, but not great. While they are easy to get on and off and the Vibram outsoles are grippy, these are not the usual comfort and hikeable boots I'm used to from Oboz. These have a softer-than-normal midsole than other Oboz, which is fine for general walking around town or trail walking, but would definitely not cut it in active Winter hiking use, especially carrying heavier loads - you can feel more trail impact and compression of the midsole than you'd expect in hiking boot. The exterior leather is also softer and overly flexible for my liking, which again, would diminish support for hiking use. The other significant detraction of these I found is they weren't as warm in the toe area as I'd expect and am used to with Oboz' offering 200gm of insulation and I could feel cold seeping through in temps below 25 degrees. Never had that issue with my insulated Sawtooths, nor other 200gm insulated hikers I've owned for that matter.
Just purchased and I did my usual dog hike, dump run, and moving outdoor furniture in the house for the winter, about 6 hours of use. I was surprised how light they were, and how they supported my foot (ankle and mid foot great, and plenty of room in the toe.) I am mainly a dog hiker in the Maine foothills and bogs, and these are a great boot. I forgot that I had them on, probably b/c they were so lightweight.
Super satisfied with my purchase. Oboz knocked it out of the park again with the Bangtail. Super excited they decided to go with a Vibram outsole this time around. I have zero complaints so far in regards to sizing and winter use. Would definitely recommend.
Very comfortable, feels light to my feet. So far excellent waterproof performance. Easy on/ off and lacing. At first I had trouble with on/off until I realized there is a thin mesh at the back of the boot. As you put your heel down it is designed for you to finger swipe the mesh and make an easy grab for the loop.
I think this is a wonderful boot, except there is no firm heel counter, unlike other Oboz boots. I could feel my left foot pronating in, just walking around the store. This made me hold off on buying it. It is a major flaw that would be a nightmare on a hike. Otherwise, this is an excellent boot.
Perfect winter hiking boot. With almost zero break in time it is super comfortable right out of the box. Would 100% buy again
