Excellent Multi-purpose Waterproof Boots

I reviewed Men’s On Cloudrock 2 Waterproof hiking boots as an REI Product Advisor. I am a trial runner/hiker, I work at a vineyard, and I live near the coast in Northern California. I need footwear that can stick with me from work through beach with the trail in between. The sound that spilled out of my mouth when I put on these boots was “ooooooo baby!” If new boots could feel like old boots, these are that in the best way. Wide toe box which tickles my trail running bone, and stiff but still flexible ankle support is there when you need it. I did not feel like I needed to break these boots in at all, and even did some light running in my first few hikes with these; they are not ideal for running, but it is doable and much more comfortable than running in other hiking boots I’ve owned. The waterproofing is excellent, holding up to being submerged and also hosed down. This is my first experience with the company On, and I have become a fan. Highly recommend these boots - they are worth it.

Great shoes but not waterproof

The shoes were comfortable out of the box. I made several short hikes 1 Mile plus, and 1 four miles plus. The shoe performed good in all condition but are not waterproof. I walked over root, rocks, up and down steep terrain, then I tried them in a shallow rock bottom creek to test being waterproof, and the grip on wet rocks, the grip was great, but my socks got damp on the top at the toes. It seems that they have seepage on the mesh toes, and then through the liner. If you are not worried about waterproof, they should work for you. I wore them with medium socks.

Rugged, Capable and Comfortable Boot

This Mid boot is both sturdy and comfortable yet flexible and accommodating under a wide range of trail conditions. This boot has a rugged insole and outsole with deep lugs that offer excellent traction. These boots worked well on steep hiking ascents and felt light and agile walking at various speeds. The locking upper eyelets and tongue kept my lacing secure and my heels locked in place on steep descents. This boot worked well for me in hot desert conditions with excellent grip on Class 2 sandstone scrambles (my feet were warm but not over-heated) and equally well in the unforgiving Alpine environment of Colorado's San Juan Mountains. The boots kept my feet comfortable and dry in shallow water crossings and they protected and supported my ankles very well in rocky terrain. I chose Mids over Lows because I wanted the extra ankle support and protection due to a recent injury. I wore Wrightsock double layer socks and had no blisters, pain or hotspots. This boot is built to take abuse.

Not recommend

Cloudrock 2 turned out to be a huge disappointment for me. After owning and enjoying Cloudrock 1, I had high expectations, but the new version didn't live up to the previous standard. After wearing these shoes, I experienced swelling and bruising in my ankles. Furthermore, the boots developed a terrible smell after just one day of hiking, which was quite off-putting. Additionally, the front of the shoe began to peel off after being exposed to water. Overall, I wouldn't recommend these shoes for serious hikers based on my experience.

Excellent flexibility and comfort

Fitment: They fit well and the cushion in the sole is very comfy. After even only a small bit of wear they felt like I'd broken them in for weeks already. Easy to take on and off, they pair well with wool socks. The sidewalls at your ankles are a less sturdy material, still offering a bit of sturdyness but not hard to cause discomfort. It was a good balance of support and comfort. The front of your toes are covered by a soft rubber offering protection from those tree roots and rocks you can thud your toes on. Material and Construction: Nicely thought out features. There are standard eyelets which cover the first 4 loops, a hybrid eyelet/hook for either use, and the top most is a hook. They tighten well and the laces that came with the shoe are flat laces that hold the tie well. Even with using every lace eyelet and hook the laces ran a bit long. The rear of the shoe has a cutout for your achilles and was comfy for downhill and uneven slopes. The shoe didn't seem to allow for much toe crunchage while doing downhill either which is always a relief. Waterproofing - Unfortunately I didn't run into much moisture. However the normal morning dew was such that during a normal walk, ordinary shoes would be damp where as these stayed warm and dry. While it's waterproof now, above the toes is a more fabric free-breathing portion of the shoe. While offering comfort and a decent flex point it will probably need to be waterproofed in the future with normal wear and tear. Improvements: Not much really. The side of the boot has these little square cutouts that aren't hollow. If you step in mud and the mud gets in these squares they'll be quite a pain to empty out once it dries. The rear empty square is about an inch and a quarter deep. The only other one being pricepoint, they are a pricier shoe. Regardless, these are minor things and the shoe is holding its own again some of the best in my inventory. I definitely recommend these. Between my Solomon's and my more recent Oboz ankle-high's these are my go to favorite for the time being. About this review: This review was written by myself and my own thoughts on a product provided by REI for testing and review.

Lightweight, dry and warm

Versatile outdoor footwear! These boots are good for cold weather, wet weather, long treks, or short hikes. They are lightweight, like sneakers, and they keep your feet warm and dry in cold, wet weather. I live in the Pacific Northwest and these are great hiking shoes for the wet, variable weather we expect out here. They provide good support. I give these boots got 4 not 5 stars because the shoelace notches for lacing and tightening the upper portion of the boot are too small for the laces. At the end of hiking, I enjoy laces that fall smoothly off out of the upper notches on the boot. I needed to pull the laces out of these. Otherwise, no complaints.

Good comfort and protection

Good comfort out of the box. Good cushioning under foot. The footbed contributes to the good cushioning but there’s little arch support. The footbed is removable so it’s easy to replace them. Good room in the toes. Good traction. With the original insole, the collar around the ankles puts too much pressure on my ankle bones and they frankly hurt. The boots were laced very loosely to manage the discomfort. With an aftermarket insole with more arch support, the boot collars were more comfortable and I experienced much less discomfort on my ankle bones. Laces are good and don’t come untied. The toe rand is effective at protecting the boot fabric from abrasion. After 3 hikes totaling about 13 miles there was no obvious wear. Didn't have a chance to evaluate the waterproofing here in dry Southern California. They did seem to breathe pretty well. My feet were no sweatier than usual.

Terrible customer service

The boots were waterproof until a couple months in the scene started coming apart, and water started getting in. I claimed a warranty claim june fifth and I still haven't heard back from the company on cloud. I've tried multiple times to get hold of them and they won't respond.

Horrible craftsmanship!

Wore the boots for less than 10 miles of hiking and they started to fall apart (upper mesh material). Would recommend looking for other boots at this price point ($200).
