Glad I tested before the trail...
It's not bad, but I won't buy it again. The sausage was tiny crumbs/ chicken in chunks/ didn't find any shrimp. Over all heavy in a sage flavor. I wouldn't buy again only because I felt there wasn't a good amount of sausage/zero shrimp. If you like spicy rice with few chicken chunks, this will fill ya up fersure. I would have been very disappointed after a long trek if this was my dinner though.
AWFUL
I want to like this company due to the varied recipes that you don't ordinarily see from freeze dried foods in the backcountry. Unfortunately, I've tried three separate meals and they all taste similar, and are frankly, bland and not very good. Even worse, after I couldn't stomach the Jambalaya on my most recent trip last month, I left a review on their website, but was told it had to be approved before being submitted. That was over 3 weeks ago and my review was still not published. All that is shown is 2 5 star reviews, most likely deceiving viewers, such as myself, in order to purchase their food. But to each his own. I will not be buying any more food from this company.
ABSOLUTE WORST BACKPACKING FOOD
I regret buying this. Third day on the mountain above 10k, and I was excited to try this food. I wanted to try recipes that aren't just pasta and basic American food, so jambalaya seemed up my alley. I WAS WRONG!!!! After eating this I think I've just converted back to eating mountain house, this meal was so bad I almost gagged, there's an overwhelming taste of celery and nothing else, and it didn't get finished. That's terrible in the backcountry because you need your calories. DO NOT BUY THIS!
I would rather eat dry dog food
My food rehydrated in 20 minutes. I was at sea level. The food was absolutely terrible. I wanted to like it however I couldn’t stomach the intense celery taste. To make matters worse I woke up covered in Hives and have never had food allergies.
The worst I've ever tasted.
Let me start by saying (1) I'm originally from Louisiana, so I know what Jambalaya is supposed to taste like, and (2) I'm not a picky eater. I tried the Trailtopia Jambalaya last weekend on an early season backpacking trip, and I have to say, it was barely edible. It tasted like tree bark, or at least what I imagine tree bark tastes like. I couldn't finish it, even though I was hungry. The only thing I liked about it was the bag shape / design.
Decent flavor, but took a long time to rehydrate
I see some scathing older reviews of this entree, so I thought I'd jump in with my own review because I thought it was ok. It's moderately spicy, but not overly so. Good flavor from the chicken and the veggies, though I don't taste much of the shrimp. The problem I have, however, is that it took a long time to rehydrate. I'm at about 5500', and gave it a good 20 minutes, but the veggies are still fairly tough. In the mountains, it may require some simmering.
Sad night at camp.
Watery, not delicious and now I have to carry 90% of it down the mountain for the next 4 days. Prepared as directed. Would not recommend. Everyone else’s food was fantastic and they wouldn’t help me eat mine. Zero stars!!!!
Not great
Spicy, very herby (sage), no shrimp. Overall this dish was not that tasty and I’m glad I tried it before bringing it to the backcountry because that would have been a terrible dinner on trail.
Disappointing.
Really wanted to like this but it was just flat. Very salty tasting even though it's lower sodium than some other freeze-dried meals that I love. I ate it because I had to. Back to Mountain House or Backpacker's Pantry.
soo bland.
I eat a lot of backpacking food, so I generally know the level to expect from any given meal. this product was edible, but only barely. the power went out at the house so we busted out the backpacking food. This pkg was split between 4 people, one a very athletic 20 yr old who will eat anything as long as there are carbs, and we barely got it down. And that was after I did a lot of magic with the kitchen spices. Bottom line, it was more bland than unpalatable, but there are so many others to choose from. leave this one on the shelf.
