Delicious, great texture, have water w/ you
These bars were great with nice balance of flavors and great kick of natural caffeine. I had peanut butter dark chocolate flavor and really enjoyed the balance of fruit and nuts with some good old PB and chocolate. The bar seemed to be majority date but not overpowering from flavor or texture. The PB did not overpower the bar nor gum up my mouth like PB does. The chocolate was pronounced and not hidden either. Really good balance in flavors. I used these while on long distance training runs (10+ miles), breakfast substitute, and as a snack before long bike rides (25+ miles). Felt the hit of energy from the natural caffeine and since it was actual food I didn't have that empty stomach feeling while working out. Nor did I experience the crash from hitting a gel pack or sugar based item. This natural bar worked well and I will use it again. Only downside (but I say this about many products) is make sure to have water with you. If you are dehydrated this energy bar will make dry mouth gummy feeling. This is a good product and I recommend it to others.
Great Tasting Bar, Not Sure About Caffeine
I got the Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate chip bar, and my first initial reactions without tasting it is already at a good start: certified plant based, non-gmo, vegan, dairy free, and organic ingredients. I figured I would try this on the trail when I'm in need of an extra boost of caffeine or a snack. On the initial impressions of eating it, I was thoroughly impressed. It really did taste pretty good. However, I am unsure about the caffeine that it advertises - 1 Bar = 1 cup (?) of natural caffeine. Maybe it is my caffeine tolerance, but I didn't feel like it did much. I would buy more of these though as a fun snack to eat whenever I'm outside. 5/5 Recommend
A GOOD MOUTHFUL OF ENERGY AND FLAVOR
I am a Product Advisor for REI and received from them a free box of four Caffe Mocha Almond Chip flavored caffeinated energy bars by Quantum Energy Squares (QES), in exchange for my honest review. They send us examples of current and potential product lines to test and review. We get to keep them when we’re done. Here is my review. QES come four to a box, as I received them. I received one box. They are small and light, 1.69 oz (48g) per square, but not light on payout, offering 200 calories each, including 10g of protein. They carry more saturated fat than I’d like to see, 3g or 15% Daily Value. But, that’s not a horrific amount and well within reason, at least I’m ok with it. If you’re concerned about carbs, don’t be. Each bar only has 21g (8%DV) and, if you’re using these for either adventure or athletic nutrition, you already know that carbs are your friends, so long as they are good carbs. And these are caffeinated with what they say is the equivalent of one cup of coffee. The bars seem to made of high quality ingredients as list boasts mostly things a regular person can pronounce, a good sign. Pumpkin seed protein, pea protein, tapioca, almonds, chia, you get the picture: good stuff. The box does make clear the bars are produced in a facility where milk, peanuts, soy, and other nuts are processed, so be aware if you have those allergies. If it’s important to you, they are certified plant based, gluten free, and non-GMO. I decided to give them a tough test to start. So I took one on an 8-mile run on a cold day with snow that was turning to yuck, and ate it near the halfway point. My normal routine is to eat a banana and drink a cup of coffee before running, which I did this time also. I figured, if it were going to not sit well in my stomach, this would be a good test, as every runner knows it’s not advisable to try something new while on a run. But, I did anyway. My first response was they actually taste good. I find most protein bars are simply to be tolerated. If I’m eating one it’s because I need to, not because I enjoy them, like on a hike or backpacking trip and I need light weight food with dense calories. These QE Squares were actually good in the mouth. They are tasty, moist, and easy to chew and swallow. And, it sat well in my stomach the rest of my run. About a half mile after I ate it, I could tell it was there as it presented a slight weight in my gut. It wasn’t anything near unmanageable and never became unsettling, nor did it cause me any gastric difficulties, another good thing. The big surprise I had was when I got home. Usually, when I finish any run in the morning, I’m ready to eat, and the first thing I do is to start getting breakfast together. After eating one QE Square, I didn’t want anything more until an hour to an hour and a half later! I was satisfied. Even then, I didn’t want much. I was plenty hungry by the time dinner came around, though and had two helpings of vegan lasagna. I then tested it before and after my runs. I ate one with my regular banana and coffee before a four-mile run and then with a protein/fruit smoothie after a five-mile run. It didn’t seem to make any difference to my stomach, before or after running. No upset, which I didn’t really expect after my first trial. It tasted good and sat well. The only thing was, when I ate it with my smoothie, I felt like I might have eaten too much. I wasn’t bloated; just overly full, which is a bit strange as I usually feel like I’ll want something more before too long after eating just my smoothie. I had a late lunch that day. As a critical test, I saved the fourth bar for my wife. She isn’t particularly fond of protein bars in general. Being both a taste and texture person, she finds them burdensome on both accounts, and would rather eat something else. She found these Quantum Energy Squares both tasty and texturally satisfying. She enjoyed the texture, including the chia seeds, and declared she’d eat them again, if offered. The only downside to the Quantum Energy Squares that I found was the price. REI lists them at $2.95 per bar, at this writing. That is $1.75/ounce, and $0.295/g protein, if my math is correct. In contrast, the protein bar I usually go to is 2.4oz/bar with 20g protein, and 290 calories. I can get them for $1.99/bar and $27.48/case, and sometimes for less. In the case, that’s $0.95/oz and $0.11/g of protein. They’re a little bigger and bulkier to pack, but there’s more bang for the buck. The deciding factor for me will be in taste and tommy satisfaction. Upon that, I’ll have to think. I would recommend Quantum Energy Squares for anyone whether just looking for a good snack, or leading an active life and wanting a light, enjoyable mouthful in a ready snack that is satisfying, and not encumbered by the price.
It's Hip to Be Square!
The QUANTUM ENERGY SQUARE checks all of the boxes for me when it comes to providing a sustenance pack square that tastes great and packs light. The Caffe Mocha Almond Chip taste surprised me. No longer do I need to sacrifice taste for a plant based, gluten free energy bar. A recent vegetarian that is transitioning to a vegan diet, it has been difficult to find a tasteful bar. At just under 2 ounces the SQUARE is packed with just the right amount of nutrients and caffeine to sustain me through a long hike. I have use the SQUARE at work, when my schedule did not allow time for lunch. The SQUARE is the perfect size for me. I am not trying to get that "full feeling" that I can sometimes get from a bigger bar, I want the right nutrients with just enough caffeine to help finish the tasks at hand. Great product. Check, Check and Check!!
Good quality but not the product for me
If you are looking for a workout snack and you really like the taste of chocolate and coffee (especially coffee) then this would be a good one for you. It doesn't look super appetizing but most snacks in this category are about the same. The taste was really good and I did not even need water to eat it. I ate them in the morning before a run, a hike, and halfway through a bike ride. I could definitely feel that caffeine kick, kept me from getting too hungry, and was easy on my stomach. These also made a decent mid morning snack if you find yourself staring at a computer at work too much these days. Unfortunately for me I don't normally have caffeine after noon so it really limited the time of the day I could eat these. Also, I generally prefer products with minimal packaging so I usually avoid items like this. It seems like a good product for what is advertised but unless I start getting into marathons or something I can't really see myself purchasing a product like this.
Deliciously Effective
Moist, chewy, firm (in a good way), great peanut butter flavor, with a very slight crunchy texture from the nuts and chia seeds. I find the sweetness is balanced, unlike some other brands. I am sensitive to caffeine and can feel the difference within an hour of eating. I've been able to eat this before an early a.m. bicycle commute to the climbing gym, grocery store, and then the office (roughly 6 miles, some mild incline) and feel thoroughly sustained until lunchtime. I've also eaten one before work instead of having a small breakfast an coffee and it helped me to have a productive morning. This will definitely be a staple in my upcoming backpacking season, as well as an after surf session pick-me-up, as I am usually wiped out...literally and figuratively.
The perfect bar for outdoor athletics
I was honestly impressed by these bars. Not only were they delicious, but they lived up to the promise of providing a solid dose of energy and being a healthy option that I felt good eating. They are lightweight, and have a good calorie to serving ratio which makes them great for backpacking or for a quick boost and snack when doing ultra endurance sports. An unexpected perk of these bars is how they survive temperature. I was nervous taking these on a ski trip in -20 degrees that they'd freeze, but they remained chewable and easy to eat which is vital in the Alaskan backcountry. I'll definitely be bringing these for future trips and I recommend you do too!
Great for a Boost
I tried the Dark Chocolate and Pink Himalayan Salt. My wife and I took them skiing up in Vermont. My wife tried one as a replacement for coffee in the morning, she said it was a little too salty but I found after sweating it out for a while and looking for that second burst of energy I was really craving that salty flavor. I didn't really notice much from the caffeine but I'm a big coffee drinker, probably not enough give anybody the jitters. The overall quality of the bars is pretty good. They definitely have that 'energy bar' flavor but the almonds in the bars are real and in large pieces so it breaks up the texture nicely.
Coffee forward flavor
Well I have to say these are some amazing protein bars. Quick easy grab and go 200 calories. Great tasting if you like coffee. I will say if you don't like coffee this might not be the flavor for you. I'm not sure if they have other flavors I received this as part of a promotional review product. But I would definitely be interested in having these in my hiking bag for long trips get a little boost. Package says it has about one cup of coffee per bar. They are a date-based bar so they are a little bit thicker and heavier. They also do get cold making them difficult to eat. So they might not be an adequate winter hiking bar. I left one in my car overnight and I was going to have it in the morning and there was no way to chew it. So I left it in the package until later in the afternoon took it inside and it was perfectly fine. They kind of remind me of some other date bars that are on the market. Overall though the flavor for me since I am a coffee lover was amazing. @rei #reiproductadvisors
Delicious Dessert Energy
I tried the Quantum Energy Squares in the flavor of Himalayan sea salt. I thought these were really delicious! I’m not a big fan of energy bars that have a lot of prominent nuts and are really crunchy when I’m on hikes because my mouth becomes really dry and I end up drinking a lot of my water supply. Most chocolate flavored energy bars have a strange flavor or the chocolate has a fake taste to it. I found that these weren’t too bad! I loved the Himalayan salt flavor to these. It added a good flavor kick. It tasted like a real dessert treat and not like I was just satisfying a craving with convenience. I love having a small snack on hand with caffeine for halfway through my trek or whatever activity I happen to be doing. Even if it happens to be a daily task where I might not have time to eat. It gives enough kick to push me through so I don’t crash out. This is definitely something I look for in a snack product for my outdoor adventures. One thing I REALLY liked was that it was very moist. It was easy to chew and swallow. Making it easy to snack while I’m still on the go and I don’t have to stop to snack or worry about choking. It might seem like a silly concern but it has happened! It’s packaged small, flat, and lightweight. Easy to pack. Overall, it’s a great product! I’d recommend and try more flavors!
