So far so good! Skeptical of the complaints.
I was hesitant to buy this bottle due to all the reviews where people say that it's finicky to close or easy to cross-thread the lid, and that it's prone to leaking. But, I couldn't find another bottle that had everything I was looking for: single-wall stainless construction, 32oz+ capacity, ideally with a wide enough opening that I could feel confident throwing it in the dishwasher instead of needing a bottle brush to get the insides decently clean. I made a trip to the store to check it out in person and see if the complaints were warranted. Frankly, I don't see the issues. I made a conscious effort to cross-thread the lid and could not get it to happen. It's sitting on my desk upside down right now and the water is staying in. Only minor observations I have are: - The steel does seem to be a lighter gauge than I recall older KK products being, so I could see it denting or breaking more easily. I might be overestimating the old bottles, though, and this will mostly be an indoor bottle for me anyway so it wasn't a dealbreaker. I still expect the stainless steel to hold up well, especially for my use-case. - The lid design can leave a few traces of water around the lip of the bottle, but it's never enough to drip or make a mess. Either Klean Kanteen made changes over time to address the poor feedback (I've seen some mentions of improved gaskets), some folks got duds, some folks didn't have the right expectations (maybe thinking condensation due to the single wall construction was leakage?), or I'll run into the issues eventually. If I run into issues over time, I'll update this review. But for now, I'm pretty satisfied!

Bottle dropped on small rock and water leak.
My family has 8 of the 40-ounce water bottles. We have dropped them before and the bottle got a dent and was strong enough to not leak. Not this bottle. Fell out of day pack on a small rock and got a hole with a water leak. Good thing we were carrying other water bottles. Pretty surprised as we felt with the bottles being made of stainless steel they should be durable. REI store in Silverthorn CO directed us to Klean Kanteen for warranty and replacement. Disappointed that REI will not honor warranty at store. I have a friend with same issue with a Klean Kanteen water bottle and the company refused to honor their warranty. We will see if Klean Kanteen takes care of their customer or not.

Great, I just tend to miss-thread when I cap it.

Received free product

Really good, I just keep miss-threading it.... The bottle is great, I tested it biking, hiking, and fishing on the north coast of California. The bottle is great and the water tastes good, even when warmed.... I tend to be sensitive to off or chemical flavors in water, and this bottle keeps the water tasting good. Nice solid metal ring on lid that is sturdy and snaps down nice and snug, pops up with just the right effort. For some reason, I keep miss-threading the cap. I tried to take an artsy photo with a bridge in the background, then had a good laugh when I noticed later scanning photos that I had staged the bottle with the cap incorrectly screwed on...oh well, sort of affirms my one issue. I would have preferred to give 4.5, it is great regardless!

Great. Simple. Love the lid with loop

Received free product

I have carried this water bottle around with me for a few weeks. I am a bit old school in that there are so many options for water bottle out there that I like simple. And this water bottle is simple. It has a container and top. No straws or other things that can mold or break. It is stainless steel which I like. In the past few weeks the bottle has gotten a bit beat up, but I am tough on things.

High Volume and High Quality

Received free product

This is a high quality, high volume water bottle. The materials are sturdy, including the bottle top, which tends to be the weak point in many water bottles. The thick, sturdy metal loop paired with the hearty plastic allowed me to connect it to a carabiner without a second thought. I also loved the higher volume capacity at 40oz. I’ve used this in the office, at the climbing gym, on campouts, and on hikes. It fits well into the side pocket of my pack and can also be connected to a carabiner for external pack storage or to hang on a nearby tree! The only slight negative is that when condensation builds up, the bottle becomes extra slippery. That’s not unique to this bottle, but with the aluminum build it can get pretty slick.

Convenient Bottle for quick trips

Received free product

Bottle looks nice and is very light weight. It does lightly smudge with your hand prints. I also found it not to keep water cool for more than 4 hours. When left in the car, ice and water was melted. I left it in fir 2 hours. I like the top handle because you could clip on. I used it to hold on to during a hike. My hike was 2 hours and I felt the handle became very uncomfortable for my fingers. It did not have the same conform at a hydroflask for reference. The side of jug overall was convenient. It fit in my ostroy pack.

Nice bottle, a Little Dishonest

Received free product

Pros: I love the stainless steel. The wide mouth will get good use, intend to use it more for storage than drinking, such as storing juice in a cooler where the metal will help keep the contents cool. Cons: It says compatible with most backcountry filters but the wide mouth immediately makes that not true with all the common types. Beyond that, there’s no examples given on the bottle or the item description online of any filters that do fit. It also uses a plastic seal so the interior is only 99% steel.

Good Average Water Bottle

Received free product

“I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review.” I love the concept of not using a plastic bottle and this bottle had great potential. It worked fine but really didn't stand out like the ones that utilize a double wall technology. It is great at holding water and unlike other reviews, I didn't notice any leaking. The temp of the sides however changed dramatically depending on the content. It therefore met my desire to avoid a plastic bottle and act as a solid choice to hold room temperature water but is not insulated and therefore not suitable to keep things hot or cold.

Solid bottle, but it does have its flaws

This bottle is light, looks great, and solidly built. The cap loop is so helpful too. However, there are two major flaws. One is that the cap is finicky, and you can tighten it in a way that it seems closed but isn't really. Not a big issue, you get used to it. More critically, the silicone O ring in the cap seems to be pretty loose and has come out multiple times. Without the O ring, it can leak pretty badly. I lost my O ring on a trip and it was frustrating, but I kept the bottle upright and survived. Overall I'd still buy this because I like the size, build quality, and the fact that I can throw it into the dishwasher

Nice, lightweight single-wall bottle

Received free product

I like this water bottle for what it is and how it's used. Being a single-wall bottle, I wasn't expecting it to keep my water cold on an outdoor excursion. After a 2+ hour walk in 80+ degree weather in Boulder, I returned the water bottle to the car while we ate in town. Returning to the car, I was surprised that the water was still on the cold side. It definitely wasn't hot or even warm. It won't stay as cold as a double-walled bottle, but that's ok. I will likely use it indoors or for short walks when its not too hot. I llke that it is lightweight and small. It holds more water in a smaller form factor than my 34 and 36 oz double-walled bottles, and is not much bigger than my 18 oz bottle, and it weighs significantly less than all of them. I don't drink hot liquids, so can't speak to its performance there. No problems with leaks or construction.

Great light weight bottle

I've had Klean Kanteen bottles for years and they have served me well. In my experience, they are a durable, lightweight alternative to plastic and double-walled bottles--the latter of which I think are overkill for most uses (in terms of weight and environmental footprint). While you need to be smart and careful with high temps, the bottles work well with hot water as well as regular drinking water--making it possible to have these double as a teacup / coffee mug at camp as well as the trail camel. Highly recommend!
