Top of the line even if they have some issues.

These are still the best boots I have found in the 200 range, hence I will keep buying them. I know some people tend to have issues with glue and different parts, but I think people also need to be reasonable. This happened to all the older versions as well, and people acting like the older versions, which I still wear to work as they fall apart slowly after 8 years, are some kind of steel diamond are not being truthful. Anybody wearing these 5-8 hours a day is going to see significant wear over a year or two. I have been working at FedEx, and these types of shifts 5 days a week for a year basically took my older pair from looking still decent to fairly grubby, e.g., seams bursting, rubber separating, et cetera. What I CAN say about these new ones is that they have been redesigned and are now much more fit for hiking. The toe box is nearly perfect compared to the horrible box in my original pair from 8 years back. The sole has been completely redesigned with a ton of computer data, and it shows, as they are more grippy and resemble soft spikes more than the older soles. The beefier cut also helps prevent water flow in certain areas. I cannot comment on waterproofing yet, but I will update the review as I go on a couple hikes this Winter. I can't say my old pair were all that waterproof either, but they got the job done. If you are looking for purely waterproof boots, you need to start looking into mountaineering boots people. Don't expect any boot like this to keep you completely dry in rainstorms. It's not going to happen. Outside of that, you can try various sprays that will also help keep the boots dryer in times of need. I must the Olive coloring here is gorgeous! Comparing these side by side with my older boots, which were size 11 compared to size 11.5 for these, and you really can see all the various adjustments that have been made for the better to basically every portion of the boot. They are lighter as well, and the overall frame to me seems more solid with a lot more room yet still perfectly contoured to my foot. I usually wear these with larger Thorlo or Darn Tough, and the extra toe box room coupled with the half size up from my normal 11 is perfect. Could not ask for more there. I love the treads on these, and the overall design aesthetic is definitely a step up. As far as craftsmanship I cannot totally comment on this, but nothing seems out of the ordinary here. Nothing cheaper or less valuable about the boots. I think they switched to a tough plastic instead of metal on the laces, and that could be a small issue, but not unless you are doing something extremely out of the ordinary with them. The tongue now is closed in more by the top sides of the boot, so the tongue no longer tilts to one side or moves outside of the general top ankle of your foot. That has been an annoying issue with my older pair working at FedEx. And let me tell you FedEx has really shown me how easily a shoe can be ruined and torn apart. I won't even set foot in there with this pair right now. Any job like that is going to show you how well a pair of boots are made, and honestly I doubt these would hold up much past a couple years there either. But that is not the point. Salomon's warranty service is pretty good, and if you do see any issues you can easily get a new pair from them. If they don't live up to what you want, then by all means there is hardly anything better out there without going up to 500+ mountaineering boots. You get what you pay for here. After my dividend, these were around 165 bucks with the 20% annual coupon applied. You can't beat that for these type of boots.

Dont Believe the Hype

Comfort is a standard that most companies achieve easily. These are comfortable. Quality is what separates cheap from expensive shoes. These are priced as quality boots, but they are not. I patrol power lines in forested areas. That requires hiking all day up and down hill mostly all off trail. These boots did not last 3 weeks before the toe cap started peeling off on both boots. Then a shoelace broke. The plastic eyelet for the third hole doesn't sit flush with the boot, causing it to collect dirt and rocks in between it all day. I would not recommend driving in this boot. The third eyelet from the top bites the lace into place, and requires a good deal of force to get it to release the lace when trying to remove the boots after a long day. I chose to believe website reviews instead of user reviews. The bad reviews are true yall.

2016 model rocked my world. Avoid the latest boot

My old pair were amazing and waterproof. New boots purchased last year (same model) are not built the same and definitely not waterproof. I’m an outdoor Ed teacher so all my gear gets a good workout. 6 weeks to get them tested, only for them to say they’re faulty. Doesn’t help much when I need them for my job and need to trust them on expedition. Very disappointed

<50 Miles and the Sole Fell Off

I'm going to preface this review by saying that I have been a long time Salomon boot/shoe user. I have owned several pairs of X Ultras and speed cross's over the years and bought the Quest 4's to replace my X-Ultra 3's that had over 1000 trail and backpacking miles on them. I switched to the Quest 4 Gore-Tex boots because of the support and rugged design the boot offered. I completed a few day hikes, but on the second day of my first backpacking trip with these boots the sole began separating from the boot. These boots had fewer than 50 miles when this began! Thankfully I keep some duct tape on my bear can and was able to come up with a trail fix to finish the trip, but these will be returned! I'm not sure if Salomon had a bad batch of glue or what, but I'll be switching to a different boot.

Clearly designed to disintegrate

Buy these at your own risk and take all of the reviews on here seriously. I have purchased more than 20 pairs of Salomon shoes for my family and I over the last 15 years and something has happened to their quality in the last 5 years. I purchased these Quest boots to replace a 10 year old pair of Quest boots that I now regret replacing. The old ones were still ok in hindsight compared to these new boots which have completely failed in less than 3 years. The soles are literally splitting in half, the toe caps have peeled off on the corners and even the Gore-tex liner is leaking. I am honestly shocked at how poor quality these are now. I love the customer service at REI but Salomon products will no longer be my go to shoe supplier as they are clearly not the same quality as they used to be.

Best boots so far ! For work !

I’m a Garbage driver in San Francisco, I’ve gone through Red wing boots , Hoka , Keen boots , you name it , I give everything a try . These have been the most comfortable , best ankle support boot for me . All others I would have to purchase insoles . I average about 60-80 miles a week through super steep hills / down hills , flights of stairs . The tread goes quick just like any other top brands I have tried . I know I put them to work but just wish they would last a bit longer. It’s an awesome boot but spending $280 every 3-4 months hurts lol ( a little discount Rei ??? :D) P.S … Break them in !!!! I almost returned them . So glad I didn’t!

A great boot when it's new and in good condition

The boot is great when it is new and performing as you would expect for this top-shelf boot. I have bought several of the Salomon Men's Quest boots. After some time (~ 1 yr), they begin to separate in the front of the boot where the waterproof top material meets the sole and related places where the fabric bends or takes on more stress. There is no obvious fix because it's not like a sewn seam that came undone that you can take to the shoemaker. One this happens, of course they will leak if you happen to step into a puddle, small creek, etc - and nothing stinks more (literally/figuratively) than a wet REI sock to boot ;-( I was a US Army Medical Corpsman stationed in Panama. We wore jungle boots that the Salomon Quest resembles. They were waterproof and rugged enough to handle any terrain in Panama. I thought the Salomon Quest was a good replacement - at least until they begin to disintegrate.

Such poor quality, will 100% fail on you!

I have now had two pairs of these boots and both have failed on me with very little use and let in water. Both boots have failed in the same place on the bottom of the toe cap where it meets the sole on both sides of the boots. The first pair were replaced and the second pair have failed which includes being in lock down for a year, I went on a two day hike and failed again. Shocking!!! please do not buy save your money

Out of Box Review - Repeat Buyer

I have no reliability info to report yet. This is an out of the box review. Background: I have an older pair of quest boots (purchased in 2017 and seen in photos) that happen to be one of my favorite boots of all time. I put these things through rigorous use and thousands of miles over the past 4 years... if only these boots were still in production. The new pair of Quest 4 Gore-Tex boots do not fit even close to the old ones did out of the box. This pair is stiffer, less comfortable, and position the foot flatter. The sizing has also changed. My perfect fitting 9.5 size is now too long in the new pair. Outside of these shortcomings, there are some others that make me worry that this pair won't be as reliable as the old: the tread pattern has been downgraded and the tough metal eyelets have been replaced with plastic. Some of the fabric feels to have changed as well. Aesthetics have also changed. Several of the Salomon insignias have been removed, the color of the fabric on the tongue no longer contrasts the color of the green outer boot material, a pointless and ugly loop has been added to the tongue (no one has ever had an issue with this), stitching has been moved from the tongue, and the shoelaces don't look as good.

Comfortable, but needs improvement

I have had several pairs of quest boots over the years. My favorite is still the second generation. This particular generation is not as durable. I have had this pair for less than two years. I already have chunks of the soles missing on the bottom. The toe protection is also thinner than previous generations and is delaminating. I included pictures of both issues. You can see the pieces missing on the soles and where I used gorilla glue to glue the toe piece back on. I would show more issues, but I can only add six pictures. The leather is also lower quality than my previous generations. The leather looks very worn from getting wet only a couple of times. The traction is terrible in cold weather. This particular rubber hardens in the cold and provides little to no traction when that happens. I only have about 100 miles of hiking on these boots so far. I rotate between this pair and two other brands of hiking boots. This is the only pair of boots I've ever had these kind of issues with the sole so far. All of my other boots have Vibram outsoles. I do a lot of hiking in the rocky mountains in Colorado and some in Michigan. The only pros I have for this generation are comfort and a nice shank. I like that the bottom of my foot is always comfortable. Unfortunately, because of the problems with the sole, I already have to replace these. I will not buy or recommend another pair of Salomon boots until these issues are fixed
