I bought this jacket roughly
I bought this jacket roughly 1.5 months ago and immediately hiked in it at around 6500-8000 ft in our neighborhood range of the Wasatch, Utah; no complaints. Days afterwards we left for a 2 week trip to Portugal that included city, wine country, small villages, beaches, and coastal kayaking all at around 18-28 C or 64-82 Fahrenheit. This jacket killed it; kept away the slight chill from me having packed for expected warmer weather overall, kept off the light rain we had for the first week with no leaks, was a great breathable top layer under my PFD while kayaking, and looked good enough to wear around without looking too touristy. Very happy with this piece.
Nice but could be better
+nice material (stretch, water repellent) +partially breathable (quite enough for aerobic intensity, for anaerobic intensity is not breathable enough) +wind resistant enough (15-20 m/s still OK) +light and packable -pockets could be down -I miss breathing panels (zippers) under arms (on chest - bad solution for me) -strange cut (I'm 180 cm height and have 70 kgs, I wear UK S - this size is wider than I would like to have and shorter, UK M is too wide for me) I use this jacket usually for cycling, nordic skiing, running and other outdoor activities. For my use could be more compression but for hikers etc could be ideal...
Go to Soft-shell
I have had the Borealis Jacket for just over 2 years and it is still going strong if a little sun faded. It has been used for everything from walking days, mountaineering, scrambling, rock climbing and backpacking trips. I use it over a t-shirt as a wind proof layer or to give me a bit of protection from the sun and then when it gets colder I just layer up underneath. The only weather and environment it has not been used in is full on Scottish Winter. The hood pops over a helmet when needed, two great chest pockets allow a map and compass to be carried when needed and the elastic in the cuffs keeps the sleeves in place nicely. Brilliant versatile jacket that has become my go to soft shell.
This is a killer piece. I've paired it with a midlayer to add to the warmth and also used it as a standalone piece when moving quickly or the temps are at the boarder of wanting some sleeves. I don't really know how to explain it, but the Borealis is a bring-every-time piece. The pockets are a mesh, so you can open the pockets to dump heat without having to unzip the main one and have the pieces flop all over. I've entertained picking up a second one, but so far the first one has been put through the ringer and only has one snag.
A fantastic fit, I am
A fantastic fit, I am 6ft 2” and just under 15 stone and I purchased the jacket in large. The jacket is lightweight and breathable and helped against the wind on the summit of Tryfan. I will be wearing and testing it more as the autumnal weather comes in.
Allrounder
One of the lightest serious sommer -softshell jackets. I personaly wear in whole year round. Even for biking, skiing und moutainclimbing in winter. It works perfectly with a wool badelayer and/ or a light Alpha fleece jacket.
This is the second Borealis
This is the second Borealis Jacket that I've had and it seems that the fit is slightly slimmer than the previous version which suits me. So far I've used this jacket for hillwalking in the Lakes as the shell of my layering system (thermal, thin fleece and the Borealis). In wintery conditions it's done a good job of keeping out the worst of the wind but I've needed to keep moving. On the milder days I've alternated having the fleece layer on and off to aid temperature control. The stretch of the material allows me to get the sleeves over the top of the gloves easily. The pockets are generous however I find the phone doesn't sit neatly inside the chest pocket and it would be useful if there were a smaller internal pocket to hold the phone more securely but I appreciate that this could make it more difficult to get the phone out quickly. Although this is a very lightweight shell I would like to see a slightly more featured hood on the jacket. This doesn't have to be as featured as the one I have on my Torque Jacket but something similar to the one on my Vital Hoody
Great fit, lite, good protection
Great fit, lite, good protection from the winds in North Yorkshire.
Love it.
Love it.
Water resistant it is not
Bought the jacket approximately 6 months ago, fit is good (38 chest and size medium), lightweight, breathable, good amount of stretch making if comfortable and packs down reasonably compact. I've worn it perhaps a dozen times for short trips to and from the office when weather has looked unfavourable. Today it rained (not what I would describe as hard), and although I was only out for about ten minutes my shirt and shoulders were soaked, also down the inside of my arms where the jacket flexes. Slightly disappointed considering the matrix fabric is described as providing weather protection and in Q&A below the jacket is described as water resistant. I accept it isn't a water-proof jacket but I'd expect more protection for the odd shower than what the jacket provided.
