Reliable lock
My go-to lock of my lock collection (u-locks and combo steel cables). I feel pretty safe leaving my bike in sketchier parts of town. The holder has worked out well for me on my gravel bike, which sees some pretty chunky roads/paths. Does the job!

Unreliable
I had one of these and the lock would not engage and the Abus customer service was completely not responsive. I would avoid this lock completely and I’m not at all impressed with Abus as a company.

So Far, So Good!

A lock really has two roles: yes, to stand up to various attacks from a motivated thief, but also primarily as a deterrent from tampering in the first place. For a bike lock, it should be flexible in application, and reasonably portable. This lock, at least in theory, does all of that. I did not use the frame mount that the lock comes with, instead keeping mine in my REI tube bag, and it fits perfectly, along with my own custom cut nylon chain sleeve that slips over the lock's folding segments and keeps it from banging around and conceals its riveted joints. It looks heavy duty, and indeed without some unusually specialized tools, no one is going to cut or pick through it. The 36-inch unfolded length may be too short in some situations, but I have not had any issues with it so far. There really isn't much else to say; either it works, or it doesn't! I'll certainly update this review if this lock is less than stellar down the road.

Reliable security.

Very secure lock that has protected our bikes in some very dangerous places. We don't use the holder. We keep them in our backpacks or panniers. We have several of them. Worth the investment. Cheap locks are easy for thieves to defeat.

Nope. Bike stolen.

Bought this for my son who is at college. Someone easily cut through it and stole his bike. :(

Easily cut, no money back, no bike insurance

absolute nightmare, it was cut easily at the Whole Foods, luckily retrieved the 2k$ bike but the lock didn't help, had u lock for years before and will switch back to supersize new york style u lock.

Reasonably secure, good reach, convenient to carry

I love the way this lock carries on the bike: compactly folded on the seat post and quick to get in and out of its holder. As to security, it's no match for a Kryptonite New York lock, but it's obviously better than a cable lock. It can loop around a lot of things that a U-lock won't attach to, like the lamppost I attached to today. So it's a great compromise between the convenience of cable and the security of U.

Don't Buy

Total waste of money, the holder will drop your lock right away. It will not securely hold the lock on the bike at all, and you will lose this lock. You might as well just save yourself the time and effort and flush 130$ down the toilet. For 130$ you would expect everything about this item to be premium, but then again REI does like to sell overpriced garbage. Just go to Walmart and get a 30$ lock.
