Great for Snow & Ice

I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. Weather has been crazy this year. these were great in the first real snow of the season that we had. They're waterproof and I tested that. The side zipper is great for fast on and off. I really love that the instep strap is replaceable. Had a pair from another brand where the instep was not replaceable, it didn't hold up well. Temps were in the negatives (-) for several days running. Solid sheet of ice under snow pak. These did a great job. Easy to take on and off. Fit my boots great, very surprised at the protection they provided. Quite happy with these.

Hardy winter gaiters

Tried to Kahtoola gaiters last week in snow and slush. They were easy to put on and relatively lightweight to carry, small to pack. They are Goretex with a waterproof zipper. There is a tiny gap between the bottom of the fabric and your shoes where the rubber fastener attaches. I did not get any snow in there though. The straps that go under your shoe are durable rubber/plastic. I heard later that most gaiters fail on the shoe strap. Seems like these won’t. The gaiters size M did not quite reach above my calf so I thought they might fall down but they didn’t. I am 5’6 and the M seemed to fit well over my leather hiking boots

High quality gaiters for hiking

Overall, these are an excellent and durable set of gaiters for most hiking footwear. Pros: * They keep stuff out of my boots, including reasonably deep snow, and kept my pants dry. * They have a good fit and feel. * They reliably stayed up with an intuitive tightening strap. * They pair well with microspikes. * They pack down small into an included stuff sack. * The heel strap works quickly and well, with lots of adjustability, once you know where it is. * They have nice clip points inside that could be used for hanging or to help keep them up. * They look nice. * They fit well over most of my footwear options. Cons: * Finding the heel strap adjustment is not immediately obvious. Details are clearly specified in the manual but you may not realize it's there if you don't read the manual. * Proper fit requires manually adjusting the heel strap for different footwear. * On lighter footwear (e.g. trail running shoes), the fit can be a little loose. They still seem to work here but aren't ideal. * They don't really fit my mountaineering double boots. I was able to force them over the boot by leaving the heel strap unclipped (which still seemed stable, although this doesn't appear to be intended use) and wearing thin socks but you should verify sizing with any larger boots.

Comfortable & Protective-Could be Easier to Put On

I used these gaiters on two damp trail runs and a damp evening hike with mud patches. I’d like to have gotten in a XC ski run with them but…no snow. Once I got them on they were very protective and comfortable with less of the stiff crinkly feel that gaiters sometimes have. I had some issues getting them on at first due to the zipper side location and small size, and the unique internal instep strap adjustment feature. You can’t adjust the instep strap after the gaiters are put on, and having the correct (tighter!) strap adjustment makes the zipper hard to get started. If the zipper pull and bottom stop were larger or the instep strap adjustment on the outside, then these would be a lot easier to put on. Once on they fit very well on classic hiking boot and XC ski boot soles with defined heels. If you use them on trail runners or light hikers with flatter flared soles the robust instep strap can stick out, feeling a bit like you’re catching things underfoot.

Navigate the cold with these gaiters!

Had to wait for cold weather to finally arrive this winter before I could try these out. I suited up for a walk on a -20F windchill day through town. These gaiters were easy to get on my boots once I had adjusted the strap that runs across the sole of the boot. There are three adjustable sizes in case you have narrower feet than me. The zipper closes easily and there is a drawstring at the top to help keep out snow. The material is sturdy, so I will try these on a walk in the woods (where there is brush) once we get more snow. I got the large size which is a men’s 10.5-12.5US, and I wear a women’s 10 in heavy boots (which I used these with). So I think size is forgiving at least sizing up. These will be great for snow shoveling, or any outdoor activity in deep snow to keep my feet dry!

Gaiter Perfection (promotion review)

Great fitting gaiters with the perfect height and technical features. The best part is they function as expected without thinking about them. For me, the NAVAgaiters fit perfectly mid-calf with my Apina nnnbc xcounty boots. The higher density material in the lower half is sufficiently burly for back country skiing (many falls in the woods) and the upper half is light and a bit stretchy. There are cinch straps to seal out the top and lace hooks on the bottom (my boots don't have exposed laces). The bottom strap is holding up fine, is easily adjustable, and replacable. The seal around my boots is excellent with no leaks or packed in snow to date even whole cutting trail without using the lace hook. Overall, an excellent pair of gaiters that I plan to use in the summer as well. They even come with a nice little storage pouch!

best gaiters I've ever had

These are tall gaiters that attach to the laces and under the instep. The top has a pull-cord adjustment for tightness. They zip up on the outside. Quality wonderful. Zipper and pull-cord work well and easily. Windproof and waterproof. Stay dry with no moisture build up inside. I haven't worn them yet also for cross-country skiing or winter biking (with ankle-high mountain biking boots), though plan to. The fastener for the instep cable (more cable than strap) is a bit hard to adjust when your fingers are cold, as it takes pressure to push it back together especially when the material is cold and stiff (temperatures here have been in the teens)--better to do this inside before you head out. The instep cable is relatively substantial and requires a bit of a heel. Can the instep cable be removed for boots that don't have a heel? Not clear. It looks like it can be pulled out bit it does not come off easily and I did not want to force it. These also have a hook for your laces. Not clear how these would sit on my cross-country ski boots for which the laces are covered. The sleeve is two materials, a thick stiff material at the bottom and, at the top, a light and flexible material (that is not stretchy). These came with a small cloth bag--my gaiters in size L do fit though the (adjusted) instep cables need to stick out the top. As for size, I have a large. I'm tall with relatively thin legs and feet. Over lighter hiking boots and two thin layers on my legs, I could probably wear one size smaller. My larger boots require large.

Snow game-changer

This is my first pair of gaiters, and I'm a fan. I wore them with my regular outdoor shoes (not mid), and the gaiter made an excellent seal to prevent any snow from getting in. The instep strap was relatively easy to adjust to my shoe size. Getting the zipper to connect was the most challenging part since you are trying to wrap it around your shoe. Once you get it connected, you're entirely sealed up. While I was only dealing with a few inches of snow, I'm sure these can handle up to a foot of snow. As someone who's been on the fence about getting gaiters due to the strap's durability underneath the shoe, I think the instep strap looks and feels very durable, but time will tell. This is a game-changer for my outdoor time in the snow!

Undersized and a bit awkward to wear

Good concept, but too small and awkward to get into place. Be sure to size "up", I went with an M based on the sizing chart provided and it turns out they did not allow for room for the shoe. Nor is it sized for outdoorsy muscles, the M would fit on my bare leg, but barely over the calve. No chance of any shoe bigger than a slipper working with it. Alas. Other thoughts - a tall gaiter should have hooks to help hold it "closed" while you zip up. This one does not, so hopefully you're traveling with a friend to help do that. But there ARE some weird little clips to keep the gaiters together during storage. But these two weird little clips (pictured) are not actually captive, so they will come loose and fall somewhere to be plastic waste They're also exactly the size that worries me for pet choking hazards.

Really high quality; didn't fit over my boots

These gaiters are very high quality. I like the style, colors and finishes, and GoreTex can't be beat as waterproofing! I had planned to use these on a snowshoeing outing, but unfortunately, they didn't fit over my winter boots (which are about 6" high - several inches higher than my hiking boots). I could just barely zip them, but the seams seemed strained, so I didn't dare wear them. I had the size for women's 7-8.5, and my boots are size 8.5. I think these will be great with X-C ski boots or hiking boots, and I really look forward to using them on another outing!
