Not as seems
Picture does not represent item received. Picture shows some rigidity to the top of the hat. The one I received does not have any. Can see light through the material at top of hat. Not sure if I want to return or try it out.
the best hat, watch it get discontinued
The best hat, watch it get discontinued. I love Rei and I’ve been shopping REI co-op house brand products since 2010. REI house brand usually makes a really nicely designed more affordable option to complete with more famous name brands. Anyways, this hat is very versatile, the brim doesn’t crease or anything, it’s very comfortable and well made. I bought two in the same color during the Memorial Day sale. One to keep in the car the other to keep in the house for yard work and walking the dog. I am a woman with a huge head, approximately 23.75 inches circumference. The L/XL size fits just fine. My only critique is that I wish the brim was 4” instead of 3.5”. Hoping that they don’t discontinue this one, or perhaps if they do edit it they make it 4”.
Miss the previous iteration.
I don't own this hat and I wouldn't buy this hat for a couple of reasons. I'm only looking at it because the hat I liked, which I wanted to buy again, has been discontinued (the 'Paddler's Hat'). OK, here's my problem with this hat. A sun hat called "Sahara" with the underside brim of a light color? I mean, it's a SUN hat, how about blocking some of the glare and not reflecting it back into my eyes? (OK, I already had to have cataract surgery, but maybe I can help someone else.) There's data to show that this is really important. Then, you guys removed all the breathability features on top of the crown and around the crown, and again, we're in the SAHARA here, it's HOT ok? And the cape...should you really be in the desert in a tank top? Get a bandana or something, a shirt with a collar! It's OK, but it just looks as though it would make the thing even hotter when it was tucked away. Anyway, I'm just cranky you took away the best hat I'd found so far, because nobody can seem to make a decent sun hat. This is fair try, and obviously build on the Paddler chassis so it probably has a stiff brim which you need where I live, or on the water, on a horse, or just walking around when it's windy. But I wish someone would make a packable, crushable, light colored hat with a high vented crown, a stiff brim with a very dark green or black underside. Also a chin strip with a sizeable tightener. Nobody seems to make a hat like this so I'm going to go back to sewing a baseball cap brim on the floppy brim of whatever gets me closest.
Excellent, lightweight, well designed Sun Hat
The REI Co-op Sahara Sun Hat with Cape is a wonderful addition to my sun protection gear. Coverage is excellent, making sure to cover ears and neck. The ability to extend the cape to cover the neck is perfect for long hours in bright sun. When it isn't needed, it can be tucked into the slot and stored away in the back of the hat. The hat has an adjustment strap on the top making it easy to adjust to most any head. I've worn the hat nearly every day since it arrived!
Excellent: Don’t Lose It!
Wore in SoCal and Ghana: Remarkably cool fit, and stays put during strong breezes. Great sun protection, even when bright sun shines. Cape conveniently tucks in hidden compartment of back brim, and provides excellent shade on neck. Sadly, I took it off at a meal in Ghana, and didn’t need it for the rest of the day. Believing I’d placed it into my bag, I was disappointed to find it absent. Now, REI no longer has the L/XL in stock! 😱
Best sun hat all around!
I have never found a better sun hat. Wind resistance of the brim is unbeatable. Great brim width and very comfortable fabric, no itchy forehead. Fits very well, never feels like it's going to fall or blow off. I lost this hat and was devastated, happy to find it online still. Please keep making this!
This hat is the best hat!!
I have worn this hat walking, biking and kayaking and I can tell you, this is a great hat for keeping your head, and neck, safe from the sun. I have also worn this had in the Middle East, where the intense, and while others burned their necks and tops of there heads, I was fine.
Perfect hiking hat
This hat was perfect for hiking in the sun and in the wind. It has a great wide brim and a stowable neck cape. The cape fits under the back brim and wasn't at all obtrusive. With all that it's still lightweight and easy to store.
Great to keep the UV off
Icm at the age where my misspent youth disrespecting the sun has left its mark - several times. I bought the best sunhat from REI several years ago and I wear it around the house and on desert rockhounding trips all the time. But it's no longer carried. After buying 3 hats and being disappointed in all 3, I got this and think it'll be a fine replacement to the original REI Sunday from years ago. Why only 4 stars? The sun cape is supposed to roll up discreetly inside the brim when not being used, but I cannot figure out how. There are button holes on the cape, buttons on the brim, and even elastic button holes on the brim but I can't make all three contain the cape. I've searched on line and found others complaining, but no one answering. Therefore, 4 stars.
Sahara Sun Hat w\Cape
Needed a hat for use while I'm at our country place when working outside especially when mowing 10 plus acres. This fits the bill, lite-weight, vented and the shade\cape protects the neck. Have used it for three day and have no complaints.
