I owned the 3P first and liked it so much I bought the 1P for backpacking. I think this tent is a bargain (in a good way). I will take the Stormbreak's more durable floor and substantial rainfly over its UL competitors any day. I took this out repeatedly in Alaska backcountry and PWS islands last summer and will do so again this year. Considering nature always gets a vote, I don't know why anyone would drop an additional $100-$300 and risk owning a fragile tent floor just to save 10-16 ounces. The tent is a 1P so yeah, it's small, but REI Air Rail pad fits with room to spare, my shoulders, feet, and head don't touch the sides and I'm a average sized adult male. Carry the extra ounces and stay dry in a tent you can trust... and save some money.
I took this tent on its maiden voyage in the Shenandoahs for a 7 day backpacking trip. On day 5, one pole snapped in half as I was putting it up. I wasn’t doing anything unusual. I’ve put up tents hundreds of times and I’ve never had this happen. I didn’t have a spare tent pole part because the tent was brand new. Luckily this happened toward the end of my trip, because I got caught in horrible weather on day 2 and would have ended up soaking wet and hypothermic. I have never been so frustrated by equipment failure.
A great price point, sooo easy to set up, and very small and light compared to my older REI half dome. That said it is short (or I'm tall, lol) and I can't sit up without hitting my head (I'm 5'10") so I feel a bit closterphobic in it. Those shorter or happy in small spaces might night mind. I will return mine and find a taller one.
It isn't the lightest unit out there but it is totally freestanding and a snap to set up after a 20 hour day under the Midnight sun. I've used mine in Alaska, the Yukon and northern British Columbia. Suitable for small/mild ski trips, pack rafting and bike trips. Seems stout however I'm not ready to take it onto a big icefield yet, which I would NOT do with any of the one pound tents that I've seen.
I usually take this bikepacking and it did great during some rain, thunder storms. Stayed dry. It’s enough space for me and some clothes, book, and a Klymit luxe wide sleeping pad (it fits end to end).
I woke up to a high tide and all my gear stayed completely dry-- the poles however did not last long. I'm only knocking a star off because it's a good value otherwise.
purchased this via another supplier prior to REI carrying it. 3 night in grand canyon came off without an issue. easy set up, fairly lightweight, decent quality materials. also used the fitted ground cover (separate purchase). worked great, 2 minute set up and tear down. you can use it with only the ground cover, fly and poles to shed some weight it the weather cooperates.
Took this tent on a maiden journey for a quick overnight trip to a lake. I packed it in a 60L pack and it was lightweight and easy to set up. I was able to sleep comfortably in it with my clingy 50lb husky, for the normal person it would be considered cramped so it’s definitely a 1 person tent. Love how easy it was to set up and the rain fly kept me very warm and dry.
