Better option than a single end spork!
I used this "spork" several times before writing this because...really...it's a scoop you use to shovel stuff in your pie hole! There were several criteria that I felt would be worthy to establish a one spork to rule them all winner. Mouth feel (because I think some of the rougher aluminum/titanium textured utensils feel like eating off of sand paper), length (size matters), and durability (who cares about the rest if its broken when you pull it from your cook kit). The mouth feel on this is good. Not rough like sandpaper and not cheap plastic like that Frosty spoon you might have tried. On durability, this spoon/spork is great. Bendy like an unbreakable comb and it passed being "sterilized" in boiling water. I stress tested it on this point since its plastic. Overall length is good. It'll reach into one of the newer flattened design Mountain House meals, but I do wish it was a bit longer for other brands of prepared meals and freezer bags for DIY meal prep. Overall I definitely prefer it over a single ended option because I like having a dedicated spoon for soup, oatmeal, etc. Bonus for it being made of recycled material!
The Great Spork
Testing the $2.95 OCO Utility Spork made me realize I needed to pick up a few more of them. First let me add, I received this product free for an honest review. These sporks are so useful and are well made as well. They are compact and durable making them great for camping and travel. I used them for soups, yogurt, cereal among other foods. As a nice touch they have a serrated edge you can use to cut up small items but it is no substitute for a knife. Cleaning these sporks are a breeze. If at home they can be cleaned in a dishwasher. Outside, since they have two holes in them, they can be hung out to dry. These sporks fit my hand very well and are quite sturdy too. It would take some work to break one. Being 100 percent recycled, BPA free and having a lifetime warranty what is not to love. Sporks come in blue, yellow, red or grey. I plan on keeping one or two in my truck glove-box to replace those plastic throw-a-way ones you get from restaurants. All in all a great and practical buy. GQR
Handy everywhere
You never know when you’ll be eating a meal on the go. It’s spring in Minnesota, not many outdoor activities just yet. No picnics lol. I am an reí product advisor and received this spork to test. I wrapped it in a cotton napkin, put it in a little ditty bag and tosed it in my purse. This spork has come in handy really often as I found myself needing to eat takeout frequently in the last few weeks. Well I never had to use throwaway utensils! Both the fork and spoon work as they should. The “knife” aspect didn’t get used much in my test. It’s on the side of the fork and is kinda scratchy on the lips. But it might cut something small. Over all this is a light weight hand tool to carry that has frequently been useful.
Works Well
I have had and used this utility spork for about two weeks now. At the end of the day, there is only so much that can be said about a polypropylene spork, but here are my thoughts: 1. The first picture shows the length of the spork relative to the all time favorite Toaks Titanium Long Handled Spoon, as well as a regular spoon from my kitchen. You won’t want to be using it to dig into a bag of mountain house food, and it functionally ends up a bit shorter since you probably don’t want to hold the spoon/fork part. 2. As other reviewers have said, the label leaves a sticky residue. This was solved in about three minutes with a sponge and soapy water, but annoying nonetheless. 3. I found the spork to be quite a bit lighter than advertised — 0.31oz relative to a claimed weight of 0.5oz. It’s less than half the weight of the aforementioned Toaks spoon. 4. The serrated end on the fork side is a great idea, but the serrations don’t quite make it to the edge of the surface. It worked to cut a piece of string cheese but only with some effort. I wouldn’t count on cutting through anything significant. All in all, this is a $3 lightweight spoon/fork combo with a lifetime warranty that feels quite solid and durable so far. It’s hard not to recommend if it fits what you are looking for. Personally, I have been packing it in Tupperware containers and bringing it to work in an attempt to reduce plastic use a bit and it has been great from that standpoint. I can see myself bringing it along on a car camping trip as well when I am actually cooking and eating various foods off of a plate.
Sticky for life!
Great spork, as long as you can deal with being sticky for long periods of time after using it. The sticker on this spork employs a first rate adhesive: strong, long lasting, durable, non water soluble, immune to removing agents like alcohol.Prepare to be sticky for days after using this spork.
Not worth the fight to remove the stickers
The battle to get the stickers off is worth paying a little more for a utensil that isn’t covered in adhesive.
works great
Great little fork spoon combo.
Solid Multi-Utensil
The spork does the basics regarding food consumption. The serrated edge is decent to cut through non thick food (would not be great against steak). There is a tradeoff to make on this utensil, versatility/weight v comfort. For my male average sized hands, it was slightly awkward to use. However, to save on space/weight, it is good to have versus a set of 3x regular metal utensils. Would not substitute for a steak knife.
The Swiss Army Knife of Eating Utensils
I used this on a camping trip and two picnics near home. It can handle any meal, even soup, and the serrated edge actually cuts well. It has replaced my heavy old three piece nesting Boy Scout steel cutlery set and saved many ounces of weight in my kit. And it doubles as a hatchet and saw for firewood, well not really, but it is handy! I like that it is BPA-free as well. Uco's 5-piece mess kit will replace the rest of that Scout mess kit perfectly and will save even more weight, lots more! It's even recyclable but I can't imagine that will happen anytime soon as these are tough. Good stuff Maynard!
Great Front Country Silverware
There's a lot to like in the UCO ECO Utility Spork. Though relatively inexpensive, it has a high quality feel in your hands. You aren't likely to have someone throw this away thinking it is disposable. The recycled polypro material makes it both eco-friendly, and since it is naturally hyrdophobic, easy to clean up. The cutting edge is well-designed to be aggressive enough to be useful, but not so much that it cuts up the sides of your mouth in use - you don't even notice it. The stacking design and grommetted holes (to string them together) mean that you can store enough silverware for a whole family reunion not much more space than a deck of cards. I think that these would be perfect for a car camping / tailgating tote or the silverware drawer in a pop-up camper (where storage space is always a premium). The downside to this design is that the 3-in-1 aspect means that if you go right from using your spoon on the baked beans to the fork for your smoked brisket you are going to end up with food on your hands. Not that big a deal in the front country where you could wipe it clean on a paper towel or napkin between. It would not work well in the back country though for several reasons... first, even with hand sanitizer I'm not a fan of my hands touching the things that touch my food. Too much back country illness is due to dirty hands touching food. Secondly it is too short to be useable with bagged meals or eating out of a cooking pot. Luckily the UCO ECO Spork has a big brother which solves both of those problems: the UCO ECO Switch with similar construction, but in two pieces that can be connected for extra length. That utility comes at a higher price-point though and isn't really needed unless you are backpacking. For most car campers and partiers, this is the spork you need.
